  1. mrfixit is a straight up guy to deal with. I've bought several items he had listed and he's great on answering questions and shipping. I always keep an eye on his auctions. You were lucky to find a backrest even close to complete. I watched for two years before I found one that was decent. Most are missing parts, rusted all to heck or the pad is ripped to shreds. I tripped over one on eBay by accident that was listed for a "Yamaha Vista". Took a look and it was on a Venture and looked very nice. Had a Buy It Now so I jumped on it. When I got it I was stunned. Very clean and no rust, tears and ALL the parts. Even had the covers for support arms. I think it was $45.00 on the listing. Not bad for a nice Markland. Well worth the two year wait.   5. There is really no way to answer that until you open it up and gauge every valve. You might need one....or four.....or eight......ya never know. You might not need any. There is an spread sheet floating around here on the site that would help you determine the needed shims as you check them. Maybe somebody can point you to that. There is also a floating shim kit out there that is a loaner to members. Don't forget.....you will need the shim adjustment tool also. Some dealer have a shim exchange program. That helps with the costs of replacements. Sorry if that isn't very helpful but without knowing if there is any wear and how much....there just isn't a good answer for ya.
  6. 10-4 0n that! A friend of mine owns a service shop. I noticed one day the lack of the old ever present air lines around the shop and I asked him about it. Turned around and handed me a Snap-On 1/2 impact. Electric with the battery pack. I just kind of laughed and he pointed to a 5/8 bolt with a rusted nut on it. I went to try it and he stopped me and said, "Both hands!" Man that thing had some power!! Only about $400.00 each but every mechanic in his shop had one. Wave of the future I guess. Mike
  7. I've bought several things off Craigslist. My '84 for one and a Lincoln Towncar also. The thing I am seeing here is that there are a few "Trolls" that have something for sale and they flag all the other posts that have a similar item. It happens all the time. It's a rare occasion that CL would actually remove a listing It would more likely that other users are flagging your post. The best practice is once you have sold or given away an item.....just delete the post from the board. That stops the calls and flagging. CL used to be a decent site but it's going downhill fast. More scams and BS than I've ever seen before. Mike
  8. Wanna borrow my shop gremlins? I fought mine for a full afternoon and gave up and went to bed. In the morning I found it laying in the pile of packing quilts I had used to protect it from hitting the floor if/when it came off. Damn shame I slept through it. Would have liked to seen it make that 1 1/2 foot jump into the pile. I had gone through the impact tighten, heat, impact tighten, heat and tap and impact tighten again all day. The temps dropped over night into the 20's and I guess the change in temps did the trick. Then again having left the puller on with a full load on it probably helped. LOL. But I like the shop gremlin story better myself. I guess they moved. I have left all kinds of unfinished projects out there and they are never done when I wake up. It's worth the fight. I've had my new engage in for a full season now and it never misses a lick. Great upgrade!! Looking at those pics again I'd guess you don't have an impact wrench. If you don't you might want to try to rent one or try a tool loan program from a parts store. After what I went through I do not belive the long breaker bar is going to do the trick. I used a 1/2 drive and was considering borrowing my buddies 3/4. LOL! And make sure you have something for the rotor to land on. Don't want that puppy boucing across the floor. Mike

  10. The spacer is to adjust the preload on the springs. Many have found the spacer included (I got 2 in mine) to be too long and very hard to reinstall the fork end cap. You do want it to be tight, but ya gotta get the cap back in right. If it's close you will need to press firmly on the cap to get it started. Take care there and don't cross thread it. To get close cut 2 sections of 1" PVC the to same size. That's important. Then make sure you can start the cap in. To add more preload I added SS washers to the top of that to adjust it. As the spring broke in I was able to add 2 more washers to each side to tighten it up. I used the old spring washers, the one cupped, to sit on top of the Progressive springs to create a flat surface, then the PVC and then the SS washers. As long as the spring makes contact with the cap....you have preload. The more pressure you use to to install the cap...the more preload you have. It must make contact with the cap. Mike

  12. If it is a DEKA AGM and it is dead after a month and half the odds are pretty good there is something draining the battery. The DEKA AGM has an extremely low discharge rate when not being used. I mean months on end to even drop blow 12.5 volts. I'd be looking for what might be drawing a charge with the bike off. Best bet, as you are doing, fully charge the battery and check it with a load tester. There is a chance the battery is bad, but failures are rare on these. Some of the things you described are suggesting other electrical problems. Of course check for shorts and drains and clean all connections. And I have to ask, when jumping the battery from the car was the car running? That can cause problems for the R/R on the bike. Best done with the car off to be safe. I've been running a DEKA for two years. Last years winter shelf storage with hardly any drop in voltage at all. It's been on the shelf this year since mid December and no drop in charge yet. I had a R/R fail last summer and rode the bike about 30 miles home on the battery draining it to 11.4 volts. It sat for a couple of day and it started the bike right up. Still running the same battery today and it shows 12.8 volts evey time I turn the bike on. Not saying the battery could not be bad but I'd be looking for the cause first. Hope it charges up for you. DEKA's are tough stuff. And Bob's gonna slap me but the DEKA outperforms the Odessy on CCA's for less money. Mike
  13. I got to throw in my here. I love the Avons Venoms. Some have complained about cracking on the tires but mine have shown no problems at all. I have almost 18,000 miles on my current set and will probably be replacing them this next summer with another set when they start to show the need. I am more than pleased with the handling and the wet traction. I ride every day in all kinds of weather and they do a great job. They are a softer compound but they seem to wear very well for my type of riding. So much for my opinion.......but I like them. Mike
  14. A friend of mine needed both hands done. He builds custom cabinets and didn't want to be down for so long doing one and then the other. So being the bright guy he talked the doc into doing them both at the same time. It really tests your friendship when your buddy calls you at midnight and says, "My zipper is stuck." He learned.
  15. I had the same idea when they hit the market. Stocked up on bags for packing the small stuff. Then they disappeared from the shelves in my area. Everytime you find something that works.....they quit making it.
  16. There are no kits for the seals. Just order the parts as single items. But......use only Yammy OEM seals. There are aftermarket seals out there are not at factory specs. Some are too thick and you can not get the retainer back in correctly. PM Skydoc_17. He can ordered them for you.

  19. For those of you that asked that question........what does it matter? But to answer it, no, I have never served in the Armed Forces. First of all it was clearly stated in the opening sentence "From a 20 yr. Marine" and of all the silly places to post it.....in the Humor Forum. I have to ask what upstanding Marine would pass a chance to take a dig at the other branches of the Armed Forces? I don't get it? Yeah right. Dad was a hardcore Navy, Uncle was career Army, neighbor next door was a lifer Marine and his son, the 20 year Marine was the one that sent these posts to me. Been around military folks all my life. I get it! When I shared meals with my friend, his Dad, his family....Grace always ended with Amen, Semper Fi. That taught me that his family was much larger than the table we were sitting at. How can you not respect that? So with that said.....try to laugh once in while. Or if it chaps that bad, try a lil less starch in your skivies. It's called humor folks.
