Fuel gauge
Snaggletooth replied to goatturtle's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Don't know how far you were into the bike but if you had the seat off I'd check the connections on the sending unit. Pulled mine loose once.- 5 replies

I saw a fundamentalist Muslim extremist fall into the Rio Grande River this morning. He was struggling to stay afloat because of all the guns and bombs he was carrying.Along with him was an illegal Hispanic drug cartel member who was also struggling to stay afloat because of the large backpack of drugs that was strapped to his back. If they didn't get help, they'd surely drown. Being a responsible Texan and abiding by the law to help those in distress, I informed the El Paso County Sheriff 's Office and Homeland Security. It is now after noon, both have drowned, and neither authority has responded. I'm starting to think I wasted two stamps.

Thanks David. That helped answer my question.

starter
Snaggletooth replied to titansedriver's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Ok...let the fun begin. The starter is only held on by the two bolts that you see. The starter body extends into the case and has an O-ring on it and it is a tight fit. Pulling it straight back and a wiggle will get it out. But.....in order to remove it you will need to remove the thermostat housing to get the room you need to remove the starter body. That can be a bear at times. Look and see if the screwsare still Phillips heads or maybe have been changed to Allens. Hope for Allens. Pray for them. That's another story if you have problems. It is also helpful to remove the bolts that hold the radiator in place so you can pull that forward a bit. Don't need to remove the hoses.....just a lil more room. But what is the issue with the starter? I always ask first before pulling one out. Opps......forgot about the other thread. Proceed....... Mike- 1 reply

You won't regret it Dan. Check out http://www.bohannonbattery.com/html/deka/etx18l.html or check with Skydoc_17. He's been selling them also. The AGM's have an unbelievable discharge rate. I had mine on the shelf for about 3 1/2 months last winter and never needed a tender on it. Never dropped far enough to worry about it. Gave it less than a half hour in the spring and it was back to topped out. I left town last year for a few days and had bumped the toggle for my running and marker lights to the on position. They are on a seperate circuit so no key needed. When I came back 4 days later I opened the garage and it was all lit up. That was 26 lights! Granted they are all LED's but it had very little affect on the battery. Fired right up. Joshua from Bohannon is a member here and he did some tests between it and the Odessy. The DEKA outperformed the Odessy on CCA's. Tough lil bugger is all I gotta say. Give Ugly some love Yammer!!

Hey Yammer, Nope...no charge since I pulled it. It was showing 12.8 on the voltmeter and 100% charge on the tester the day it came out. Been on the shelf downstairs since then and showed 12.7 when I hooked the digital meter back up on the bike today. I rode for about an hour today and I'll bet it shows 12.8 on the meter in the morning. I installed this battery in April 2009. The same battery I rode about 25-30 miles home on when I fried my R/R last summer. It's been through starter failures, engage clutch failures and during the regular riding season I may start the bike 20 times day every day as I use it on a service route. You may have noticed I always jump in with comments on the battery threads. This is why. These DEKA AGMs seem to be bullet proof. Never had a battery perform on a bike like this one does. No better battery for the money by my book. And Amercan made. worth.... Mike

It got up to 38 degrees today. Been below freezing for quite a while. Streets are for the most part dry. Then the itch hit me. Even worse, the forecast for the next week is for temps into the 50's. Came home and dropped the battery in the bike. (The DEKA I pulled out in mid December and no charge since then) and let the pump prime up. Hit the button and it cranked for about 30 seconds and fired up. Ah..... such a sweet sound!! Let her warm up a bit and wandered off around the neighborhood. My face hurts from grinning. Maybe ride to work tomorrow........ The itch is gone.

Side Vent Block Off Plates
Snaggletooth replied to MikeZ06Allen's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I got lucky and found a good set on eBay for about $25.00 a while back. Probably won't see another set for that price for a while. They are great in the summer to keep the heat off but I remove them in cold weather to feel some of that engine heat. There was someone here a while back that made a set using smoked plexiglass and heated it in the oven to shape it. Looked pretty good. Mike -
Hey George, I'm going to throw in here on the Caswell Tank Sealer. http://www.caswellplating.com/aids/epoxygas.htm I used this kit two years ago on the tank of my '84. Was having rust problems and it solved all issues. Easy to use, hard as nails and you don't have to worry about getting the inside totally rust free. It actually bonds to any remaining rust. I checked my tank after the end of the first season and saw no problems. Checked it again after winter storage in freezing temps and checked it again before I parked it this year. I can see no sign of any changes since I did the coating. This stuff is thick and hard. Fills any thin spots and seals everything. I'll never recommend any other type of sealant again. PM me if you have any questions. Mike

So pardon me for being curious......but what's the back story on how you ran across a deal like that? One heck of a catch!! Nice looking stuff. Mike

What battery are you currently using?
Snaggletooth replied to Ferrantelli's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
DEKA AGM. Going into it's 3rd season and still going strong. 12.8 volts every time. Talk to Skydoc_17 about them. He sells them. Mike -
Getting the same thing in extreme. It's appears to be coming from an address of a cousin that I rarely see in CA. They are all addressed to my daughter and they appeared to know a lot about her. That's the scary part. I called the cousin and she said that her facebook and outlook had been hit and EVERYBODY that had been in contact with her had been receiving spam constantly. She had over 400 e-mail addresses on her outlook. She been getting a lot on angry calls. Not really her fault and she had reported it to facebook but not much she can do other that apologize.

Thanks for the heads up on that. I've used boats.net for OEM stuff in the past also. Good folks to deal with. Be checkin' out their sister. Mike

Venture line backrest, 1987
Snaggletooth replied to showmebob's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
mrfixit is a straight up guy to deal with. I've bought several items he had listed and he's great on answering questions and shipping. I always keep an eye on his auctions. You were lucky to find a backrest even close to complete. I watched for two years before I found one that was decent. Most are missing parts, rusted all to heck or the pad is ripped to shreds. I tripped over one on eBay by accident that was listed for a "Yamaha Vista". Took a look and it was on a Venture and looked very nice. Had a Buy It Now so I jumped on it. When I got it I was stunned. Very clean and no rust, tears and ALL the parts. Even had the covers for support arms. I think it was $45.00 on the listing. Not bad for a nice Markland. Well worth the two year wait. Every now and then.............. Mike -
How much more will it take?

Death threats can be very effective when applied at the proper time. Good news.....it goes back on much easier. -
Let me think for a minute........let's see........where to start? Oh! YES!!

15. Kayak across the Pacific Ocean Entering Hawaii 4,436 km 16. Continue straight And this is where we look for help? Geesh.

There is really no way to answer that until you open it up and gauge every valve. You might need one....or four.....or eight......ya never know. You might not need any. There is an spread sheet floating around here on the site that would help you determine the needed shims as you check them. Maybe somebody can point you to that. There is also a floating shim kit out there that is a loaner to members. Don't forget.....you will need the shim adjustment tool also. Some dealer have a shim exchange program. That helps with the costs of replacements. Sorry if that isn't very helpful but without knowing if there is any wear and how much....there just isn't a good answer for ya.

How much more will it take?
Snaggletooth replied to Marcarl's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
10-4 0n that! A friend of mine owns a service shop. I noticed one day the lack of the old ever present air lines around the shop and I asked him about it. Turned around and handed me a Snap-On 1/2 impact. Electric with the battery pack. I just kind of laughed and he pointed to a 5/8 bolt with a rusted nut on it. I went to try it and he stopped me and said, "Both hands!" Man that thing had some power!! Only about $400.00 each but every mechanic in his shop had one. Wave of the future I guess. Mike -
I've bought several things off Craigslist. My '84 for one and a Lincoln Towncar also. The thing I am seeing here is that there are a few "Trolls" that have something for sale and they flag all the other posts that have a similar item. It happens all the time. It's a rare occasion that CL would actually remove a listing It would more likely that other users are flagging your post. The best practice is once you have sold or given away an item.....just delete the post from the board. That stops the calls and flagging. CL used to be a decent site but it's going downhill fast. More scams and BS than I've ever seen before. Mike
