Ok, I give up..... it was me! I was one of the few to convert the headlight to the Hella 90mm modules. Cheap ....... not really. A little over $200.00 for everything I needed. Easy ....... with the right parts yep. Plug & Play ....... yep! Uses stock wiring and switch. But if you want the inexpensive route the SilverStar H4 is the best way to go. Way more light than the stock OEM bulb for under $20.00. I started with that and I was happy with it. Until something better came along. LOL! I had the 65 watt Burners from Wally World with the SilverStar and they did the job. I wanted something with a little less drain on the system and better looking so they got changed to a set of 4 1/2 chrome Drag Speciality driving lights with 35 watt bulbs. With the Hella Modular lights the "Down the Road" light was covered. The 4 1/2 inch lights I can run day and night and increase my odds of being seen without being distracting to other drivers. The triangulated lights do seem to catch others attention and that was one of my goals. I wanted to be seen. Some pics and a couple comparing the SilverStar high beam to the Hella 90mm high beam. I knew the mounting tabs were broken
Snaggletooth replied to wes0778's topic in Poor Man Tips and Fixes
The two part epoxy will hold like stone if you got it clean. I rebuilt, repaired or replaced about every mounting tab on my bike with the two part and pieces of ABS plastic I salvaged from work. Been a couple of years and no cracking or breaks since. Clean, sand the edges, wipe with alcohol and epoxy. Done deal. -
[quote=FuzzyRSTD;598696)Great in the rain ...... Fuzzy What made me trust these Avons on wet pavement was during the ERC I took a couple years ago. It was hot all morning then drizzle turned to rain in the afternoon. All day on an asphalt parking lot. The last run of the day was a timed run though a circuit of turns and sweepers. Had to hit 25 mph in the last left hand sweeper and then stop in a 4 x 8 box. . Half way through the sweeper the rear broke loose and headed towards the out side line. I backed off the thottle a bit and the tire hooked right back up and I ended up dead center in the end box. Three other bikes went down in same spot. About half the riders there were over looking at my shoes. I think Avon may have sold a few tires that day. Hanes sold some underwear I know that. LOL! I like them in the rain. Mike

Thanks. Just wondered. I got the front 0610 and the rear 1010 from SW about a month ago.

So just curious, what dates did you end up with from Wilson? Mike

Nasty experience with the bee. Not something I'd want to go through as I'm allergic to the danged things. It was back 30 some years ago that a bunch of us that rode decided to make a night of it at a friends cabin on the river up by Fremont, NE. Most of us arrived about dark and were pouring down the beers when the last rider (Ed) and his GF showed up. We were sitting around the fire BSing and Ed started to complain he was hot. Well, back away from the fire ya know. Have another beer! Pretty soon he started saying his head hurt. Somebody threw a flashlight on him and YIKES!!! He looked like the Pillisbury Doughboy! His head was swollen up like a basketball and his neck was the same size. We had one car there so we loaded him up and headed for the hospital. They shot him into emergency and had him in there for a long time. The doc came out and told us he had been stung on the throat by a wasp and they had him under observation at that time. Another 15 to 30 minutes and his windpipe would have swollen closed. He had a close one for sure. His girl said he had slapped at something on his neck on the way up and never said a word about it. So gladly you are not allergic. But rolling at speed and having to do the "Flight of the Bumblebee" had to be exciting enough for the both of you. Glad it all turned out well. Mike

Engine Compression and Performance
Snaggletooth replied to Bobby G's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Yep, that's the ticket!! A lot of times I when I'm on the ramp getting onto the Interstate I'm still in 2nd gear and then as I blend into traffic I'll pop into 3rd. Speed limit through the city is 60 mph and once I find my pocket I'll slip into 4th and "idle" along with the traffic. (which is usually doing 65 to 70) I've got into the habit of not going to 5th until I'm over 70 to 75 mph. Keeps the revs up and have the power and response when I need it. Around town it's only a 3 speed bike. R's is goooood! Mike -
Dang Jeff, some people will do anything for a night out. But I do hope she can get that cleared up quickly. Mike

86 Thermostat
Snaggletooth replied to tufftom4's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I had to just loosen the header and pull it forward a bit on my '84 to get to the thermostat housing. And then I loosened up the radiator to make more room for my hands to get the two screws out that hold the cover on. That's the bugger of it. Those two screws. If you still have the Phillips heads replace them with allen heads for the next time. Mike -
When I received the Avons I ordered just before Memorial Day from SWMoto they were dated 1010 and 0610. Look good at this point. Be getting them mounted in the next couple of weeks I hope. The ones I had on the bike were installed in early 2008 and have almost 18,000 miles on them with no signs of any cracking. The local indendent shop tried real hard to sell me an Avon off their rack for 60% off. It was only four years old. LOL! I love the Avons. Been great tires. I hope I have the same luck with this set I had with the last. Mike

They would have had to follow me with a mop to clean up the drool. Those were the cars of my teen years to. Wish I still had a few of the old toys tucked away. Value has gone up a bit more than anybody ever expected. LOL!

Ford retractors suck! The tensioner in them is extremely prone to dirt and grit. Once it gets a bit of dirt in it it will lose it's free play and stay in the locked position. With a little luck you might be able to pry the cover open and spray something, (non-staining) like Tuff Stuff into the thing and get it freed up. Worked on two of mine. As for the other ones ...... well, now I keep a knife in the door pocket.

Indian regulator/rectifier group buy
Snaggletooth replied to Dano's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
When I did mine I created a new harness dedicated to the R/R. Hard wired the stator directly to the R/R, then new wires from the R/R direct to the battery with the a 40 amp Maxi Fuse on the red at the battery. I mounted mine inside the fairing to keep the leads and short as possible. The OEM wires were capped off in sets. (red/red & black/black and the brown was capped off alone.) I had previously replaced the OEM main fuse with a 40 amp Maxi Fuse so I left that in place. But all I can say is the charging is spot on and way more stable than the old system. Once I get past 1,000 rpms it dead on at 14.4 with just the headlight. The lowest it has dropped while at speed it 14.2 with everything lit up. Hope that helps. Mike -
how to test
Snaggletooth replied to Trader's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yep.. heat shields. When I bought my '84 there were dozens of parts packed in boxes. Took me a while to identify everything and it took me two years of decide to put the panels back on the bike. Once I did I noticed a considerable difference in the saddle temp. Much cooler to sit on. What ever they were there to protect ... fine. But if they keep me from roasting my rump they are staying on. With the shields on and the holes in the side panels closed off with the chrome panels riding on those 100 degree days is much more bearable. Mike -
trunk/saddlebag seals
Snaggletooth replied to barend's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
LOL! I have no idea. It's been about three years since I did mine. I started picking at the trunk looking at the seal and thought about what could be used to replace it. I had a bunch of scraps of the beading from doing several screens and started trying them. They fit with a lil encouragement. Worked out ok. Sealed well. I lined my trunk a couple of seasons back and it stays dry. And I ride in the rain a LOT! So all I can say is it was grey and ribbed. Mike -
trunk/saddlebag seals
Snaggletooth replied to barend's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yep, that works! Takes a while to do but it does seal up nice and tight. -
Nice! That is slick looking.
-
It replaced about a half dozen other products I usually had on the shelf. Worth having on the shelf.
-
How many products have you bought that do EXACTLY what they claim they will do? And more......... The old Sea Foam can don't have much company on that shelf. While you are shopping for the Sea Foam grab a can of Deep Creep. Also made by the folks at Sea Foam. Both great products. Check a Wally World if you can. They usually beat the parts houses by a buck or two on price.

Left side oil leak
Snaggletooth replied to frankd's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
That is a weak spot for an oil leak. I installed a new stator on mine and the rubber grommet didn't fit as tight as I would have liked. Plus the three wires from the stator could be slid in and out of the grommet. Good place for oil to wick out along the wires. I sealed the daylight out of grommet and packed sealant around the wires inside and out. So far, so good. Not leaks since. Something to check anyway. Mike -
Well, the Missouri River is doing it's best to leave the riverbed and wander where it wants in Omaha and surrounding areas. They are closing parts of I-29 North of Council Bluffs, IA as the water is up to the shoulder. It's making things interesting for sure. A few shots of the river around the downtown area.

I did the upgrade to the Buckeye stator a few years ago and recenty added the Shindengen R/R that Condor mentioned. Best combo yet! Solid 14.2 volts with the system fully loaded up. 14.4 constantly with just OEM lights. Nice match for the higher output stator and no need to be exposed for cooling as it is new technology. Have mine inside the fairing. Check around the parts sites for the R/R off a 2009 V-Max and check it out. I saw some listed last year for about $120.00.
