I feel an intervention coming on! I'll grab a 5 gallon bucket of Rocky Road!! Somebody grabs some spoons! There is a person in need here!!

When I got my new Avons from SW Moto the front was a year and the rear was about 6 months. A local independent shop was running a 70% off sale on all their "selected" tires and some of the dates on them were over 5 years old still on the racks. Yikes!

I've been trying to get on Craigslist for a while today and I'm having no luck. Can't get on from my bookmark, a direct address, or any kind of link from this site or others. All my other bookmarks and addresses are working but anything to do with Craigslist is just a message that it is not available due to not being on Internet, website problems, etc, etc. Weird. Is it just me or anybody else having problems? Mike

I had the same situation on my '84. After much converstation with local seat shops the information was that it was common problem with early model Ventures and Gold Wings primarily in the brown seats. They all felt it was from the dye leeching out of the material. I noticed it more on the passenger seat as it didn't get used as much. But I would see that on sunny, warm days it was getting sticky on my seat. I ended up replacing the seat and back rest with eBay buys in black. It would be nice to see if the suggestions made here will work on mine. I'd like to go back to the brown seat and back rest. They were in great condition except for the stickyness.

Man that is nice set up. Enjoy.

Not sure what to do
Snaggletooth replied to slayerdriver's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Frank has you going in the right direction. You are probably in better shape than you think. The flashing warning light will indicate several problems depending on what Icon is shown on the display panel. If the battery icon is lit up the cell where the probe plugs into the battery is low on water. Top it off and charge it up and you should have power again. Clean and check all the battery connections while you are at it including the ground wire on the right side of the engine. As far as the side cover leak, many times it's not the cover gasket itself but the rubber gomment on the wires from the new stator that is leaking. Lots of sealant and that problem is gone. Be sure to remember that crush washer at th 6 o'clock position on the second cover also. That is needed more than some think. And yes, it is easy to flip the shifted link upside down when reinstalling. Done it myself. Once you get that back in place you should be fine. Once you get it fired back up be sure to take some readings with a voltermeter to check charging system. Right off the battery you should see 14.5 volts above 2,000 rpms but a little lower is still acceptable. Keep us posted. Mike -
Cycle October 1988 - 1000 Mile Road Test Venture Royale and Others

:goodpost:Thanks for sharing that. Interesting read. Mike -
I've been known to ask for bike parts as "drivers side" or "passengers side" when I get stuck with a nimrod at the parts counter. It's fun to watch them dig for that one. What can I say ...... I don't have cable. I have to get my entertainment somewhere.

I had one of those conversations when I bought the NAPA thermostat to replace the one on my '84. Gave them the number for the part I wanted and they went to pull it. Came back empty handed. Out of stock. Asked them which store had one and I'll go there. "What car is it for?" Don't matter, you have the number. Downhill from there. A couple of stops later I had one in my hand. Just for fun I asked if this would fit a Yamaha. Kid dug into his computer then went into the books. Guess what? No listing for Yamahas. Go figure. LOL!

Not hard to belive from some of the HD owners I'm familiar with. Some of the guys only put on as many miles in a year as I do in a normal week of riding. One refuses to ride his bike to work because it is "too far" to ride. That would be 27 miles one way. One guy was all excited for his big 3 day run he was making with his buddies. Over and done with he actually showed 142 miles for a 3 day ride. And he did ride it. No trailer! Where in the heck do ya go for 3 days on a bike and only turn 142 miles? Geesh. I take a lot of flack from a couple of them as I can take off from Omaha early on a Sunday morning, have breakfast in Rock Port, MO, meet up with a friend in Sioux City for lunch and then swing by the Branched Oak Lake in Lincoln, NE for a quick boat ride with friends before I head back home for the night. They say thats just crazy to go for a ride like that. Me, I can't see making the payments they make on their bikes for 500-600 miles a year. But that's just me. Mike

Need Ride height measurements.

My '84 was like that when I bought it. Almost would stand straight up with the side stand down. Once I changed the front springs to Progressives the lean was much better. The Progresives changed the stance of the bike a bunch even when parked. -

I can't help you with the details of testing as my friends call me "Sparky". No real skills with the electric stuff. But I follow directions well and these guys got me though my R/R problems. Several time! LOL! I had my original OEM R/R fail and replaced it with an aftermarket unit. It only had 4 wires and that eliminated the brown wire. I understand it is not much more than a sensor feed for the R/R. No real needed purposed for it. I made a bad choice on the mounting position on the new R/R and baked it on the pipes. Skydoc_17 provided a used OEM R/R to install and that worked fine and I did not use the brown wire at all. No issue. I found a Shindengen and installed it this year creating a seperate harness for the R/R. stator, battery, fuse and digital voltmeter. All existing wires were capped off and bypassed this way. That method does eliminate any possiblity of having any issue with a bad connector, a poor connection somewhere in the OEM loom or wires added by a PO. The readings are rock solid now with no ramping on the meter. So that's my story. If you can get a Shindengen unit .... go for it. Best thing out here as far as my opinion. Wire it seperate and you should have no other issues if the stator and battery are in good shape. Mike -
I just bought a set from SW Moto. I've bought tires from them for years and all I can say is their CS has taken a dive. It took about 13 days to get the tires to me with no response from them after two requests for information on my purchase until after 10 days. I'll be looking else where in the future.

Hot Start Issue
Snaggletooth replied to MartyRobin's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The 4 brush unit is a complete starter. The 2 and 4 brush units will both fit the bike and mount up the same. Only the parts between the two different starters do not interchange with each other. Well, I think the brushes will but the rest is a bit different. Watch eBay for a early V-Max starter. I got a used one from skydoc_17 a couple years back for $40.00. Dingy found his for $60.00. Bit cheaper than buying new. And these critters are tough. Last a long time. I have seen a lot of listings on eBay in the past for V-Max starters. Read carefully and ask questions. Some are not actually 4 brush units. Buyer beware. This was a post done by Dingy on the 4 brush unit. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=55537 Hope that explains the unit for you. NOTE! With replacing brushes use ONLY OEM or high quality brushes. When I first rebuilt my 2 brush unit I replaced brushes with a set I got off eBay for about $5.00. They lasted a year before they failed and shorted out. Very low quality carbon. Cost me a starter and some agravation. Learning experience. Mike -
Wing deflectors
Snaggletooth replied to asigetic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Those are not the ones that fit the 1st gens. They had both top and bottom mounts for the upper wings. Not saying they couldn't be mounted ...... but as the fairing is a bit thin around that point I'd be concerned about cracking at the mounting points. I think I has some pics of a upper set around here somewhere. I'll post them when I find them. Mike- 6 replies

There ya go with the finger pointing again! And I'm trying to keep a low profile. Geesh. Actually, the PO did a ground mod to the starter in my bike long before I got it. It was odd looking and complicated. Spring loaded. Ol' Dingy here made life simple with an easy wire job and took pics so everybody could see the process. So he did it!!! -

Either bohannonbattery.com or PM skydoc_17. He sells them also. Best battery for the $$ in my books. Mine is going into it's 3rd season and still at its top performance. American made and tough as nails. -

Common problem called heat soak. Cheap fix .... clean starter, check brushes, do Dingys starter brush plate ground mod and clean all battery to starter and starter to ground connections. Oh yeah, up grade to the heavier battery cables to. Best and final fix. Replace stock 2 brush starter with a newer 4 brush set up. A DEKA AGM battery will be the final touch. Mike
