  1. Bongos right about the panels for the side covers. I reinstalled the plastic heat shields on the tops of the valve covers, (which the PO had removed) and found a set of the chrome inserts for the side panels. It makes the hot days much more bearable running down the road. All the heat is deflected to the rear and low so my legs weren't catching it off the engine. Taking the windshield height down to a minimum will bring a lot of air flow back to you to. I rode mine for a few days without a screen on at all and it was back to like being on a bike without a fairing at all.
  2. Jason, Have you looked into these folks. http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&Page2Disp=%2Fmini-wedge.html I used their bulbs for everything on the bike. It's a plug and play on the bulbs rather than changing the lights themselves. A lot cheaper and a great quailty product. I had one LED fail right out of the bag and they sent me a new one N/C within 24 hours. I've had them in for two years without a failure. If they don't have it ...... you probably can't plug it into your bike. Mike
  3. I wanted to go with the LED brake lights myself if nothing else for the brightness. It's a simple bulb swap out but you need to add a load emulator to keep the system from showing a failure. So..... you don't gain anything in reducing the load on the charging system. I swapped out all my running lights on the rear lightbar and marker lights with LED's so I'm happy with the rear visabilty that gives me. Good enough. I changed out 26 stock bulbs to the LED's. The voltmeter used to drop like a rock when I popped the switches for the running lights. Don't even flinch now. Mike
  4. A couple of pics I've ran across in the past. The Mad Max looking ride is about as naked as you can get. I think this belongs to one of our guys. The other one is a look I wouldn't mind for my '84 if I ever decide to slim it down. The orange one.......well ya know. Mike
  5. Hi ya Yammer. I don't know if there are any left. I knew a couple of guys bought more than one. That was how I got mine. Leftovers. LOL! If nobody has one around here they can be bought on the parts sites for around $115.00 to $130.00 range. Dan you can do this. I know you can. You have side cutters right? That's a start. Pretty simple to do once you find a good place to mount it. Mike
  6. Hey Jason, I was kind of sitting back waiting for a good technical explaination of how that all works. You won't get that kind of help from me. My friends call me Sparky. I look at it this way. After I do the work if there is no smoke, flames or crakling noises.....it's good to go. These guy keep me running. And I can leave the fire putter outter thingy at home. But it seems like you have it under control. The reason I went direct with mine, bypassing the entire OEM harness was to simply avoid any problems caused by chafed wires, poor connections and fun stuff the PO added on or removed. (He was REALLY creative). This also allows me to do very quick trouble shooting if I do have a problem on the road. The big drop you see in the volts with the brakes on is the two 1157's bulbs in the tail light. They really drag it down. Oh heck..... you have the MKII also. The electric anti-dives are a drain on that circuit to. Did you ever really trust that OEM voltmeter anyway? LOL! Never even close on mine. You probably saw the pic of the digital a couple of posts back. That is much better. So it looks like your readings are pretty much in line with what I get. 13.3 at idle.....no problems with that. Ya done good. Mike
  7. DEKA AGM hands down! Out performs the Odessy for CCA and is AMERICAN made. I'm into my 3rd season with the DEKA in my '84. No issues at all and shows 12.8 on the digital voltmeter every time I hit the switch. My battery tender has been in a box on the shelf since I installed the DEKA. Just don't need it. I do not believe you can find a better battery for the money. Got mine from Bohannon but skydoc_17 is selling them also. Mike
  8. I'm waiting for the specs on that filter and how it had to be modified to fit. Was it red? Is that the Stage 1 kit? I'm gunna get my butt whomped when he feels better. Ah hell, I got a little time. Mike
  9. Ouch! Dat cow has a dent in it! That had to be a sudden stop.
  10. The kits I've seen seem to run between $75 and $125 bucks for a full kit. Total count on shims vary a bit.
  11. So who wants to complain about how top heavy the Venture is now? But ya got to love the centerstand. I read an article on these a while back. Their primary use is to get through heavy traffic and remove vehicles from busy traffic lanes and off the side of the road to avoid a gridlock problem. Pretty creative solution. Mike
  12. Gary, I'll be thinking about you tomorrow. I'm sure it will bring you the relief you are hoping for. Mike
  13. Glad to hear he is doing alright. He was lucky. The cattle laws can drive ya nuts. Back when I was in transportation safety we had a driver in a semi come over a rise on a two lane road at 2:00 am and there was some ground fog along a creek than ran under the highway. In that ground fog there were three, yes.....black angus standing in the roadway. The driver never saw them until the he was looking at a head popping up over his hood. He got knocked around pretty good and when he came to a stop he was on the wrong side of a barb wire fence and in the middle of a corn field. He saw a farm house just down the road and headed over to it to find help. The woman that answered the door said her husband was out trying to round up a few head of cattle and had got out of the pens. She radioed her hubby and he called the Sheriffs department. Our insurance ended up paying for our truck and trailer repairs, tow bills, cargo loss, HIS COWS for current value (and disposal of said creatures), repairs to his fence and damage to his crops. Under Nebraska law (at that time), he was responsible for controlling his cattle BUT as he had been aware that his cattle had got out BUT he was making due effort to recover them he was not at fault or responsible for any damage. If he had been in bed asleep and not known about the loose cattle it would have been on his tab instead of ours. Weird world ya know. But again, hope he covers fully and quicky and decides to continue riding. If not, I can understand why. Mike
  14. HEY DINGY!!!! Paging DINGY!! I got his pics but I know he has the answer. This is what you are looking for I do belive. Dingy should be around shortly. Mike
  15. If all else fails check with McMaster-Carr. http://www.mcmaster.com/#lug-terminals/=d8zeb8 Seems like they can come up with about anything that I have looked for. I came close to needing a couple of replacements when I installed my Shindengen R/R but was able to correct my screw up without damage. Lucky Day! That don't happen to often. LOL! If ya hit on a match let us know. Be nice to have a few spares in the connection box. Mike
  16. The MKI rotors are a different diameter than the MKII rotors so they will not fit to match the calipers and pad placement. That is one of the mods we have been doing on the MKI's is changing out the stock forks, or at least the lower legs, so we can swap out the larger rotors and better calipers for more stopping power. As far as the MKII's being interchangable side to side ...... don't know that answer. I think it's been done, but somebody should be able to help with that. Mike
  17. Hi Jack. Don't know about the 2nd gen stuff but when my OEM R/R went South on my '84 it was running up over 16 volts. That was not good. With the lead/acid battery it was boiling pretty good. But on the DEKA isn't the charging rate recommended at 14.5? Or was that the minimum charge required? Shoot Joshua at Bohannan a quick note. He could say for sure if the battery can take it. Mike
  18. I feel an intervention coming on! I'll grab a 5 gallon bucket of Rocky Road!! Somebody grabs some spoons! There is a person in need here!!
  19. When I got my new Avons from SW Moto the front was a year and the rear was about 6 months. A local independent shop was running a 70% off sale on all their "selected" tires and some of the dates on them were over 5 years old still on the racks. Yikes!
  20. Never thought it would be too hot for an ice cream truck. Better hurry!
  21. Check out this site. Handy for keeping up with weather when traveling with a 'puter. http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/zoa/mwmap3.php?map=usa Mike

  23. I've been trying to get on Craigslist for a while today and I'm having no luck. Can't get on from my bookmark, a direct address, or any kind of link from this site or others. All my other bookmarks and addresses are working but anything to do with Craigslist is just a message that it is not available due to not being on Internet, website problems, etc, etc. Weird. Is it just me or anybody else having problems? Mike
  24. I had the same situation on my '84. After much converstation with local seat shops the information was that it was common problem with early model Ventures and Gold Wings primarily in the brown seats. They all felt it was from the dye leeching out of the material. I noticed it more on the passenger seat as it didn't get used as much. But I would see that on sunny, warm days it was getting sticky on my seat. I ended up replacing the seat and back rest with eBay buys in black. It would be nice to see if the suggestions made here will work on mine. I'd like to go back to the brown seat and back rest. They were in great condition except for the stickyness.
