headlight upgrade
Snaggletooth replied to friesman's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
As I don't speak da lingo there I'm only picking up bits on the specs. It looks like they are only H3's at 55 watts compared to the H9's in the Hella 90mm modulars. Heat should be no more than a standard headlight I'd think. The pic looks like there should be room for the plexi cover. -
headlight upgrade
Snaggletooth replied to friesman's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Nope, no problem with heat on the plexi on mine. Nada. Won't even melt the snow that builds up on the headlights. Don't ask. -
The trick I use to fill the rear is one of those flavor injectors you use for seasoning roasting bird. Dull the sharp tip off to avoid poking a hole in the rubber bellows. I just fill the injector up with fluid, leave it stuck in the fill hole and start start bleeding and give it a boost now and then to keep it full. I don't use a vac or speed bleeder. I just go in this order and it works well for me. Rear 1st, then the metering valve at the tree, then the LF caliber then the anti-dive (which you don't have). Then pump as much fluid as needed to run clear at the anti-dive. Even bleeding at the metering valve I can still get some bubbles at the AD. Some times it can take a bit. I top off the rear master and close it then crack the rear caliper bleeder to remove a bit from the master so it don't seize up when the fluid gets hot. A take an 8mm wrench on the first test ride so I can crack it again if needed. I've had worse trouble with bubbles in the front master at the banjo bolt. Mike

Welcome to the site. You came to the right place for info. I bought my '84 in '07 as a garage find after 9 years of being stored. It took a bit to get her back together and running right and yep, I spent some bucks getting there. But in the end the Venture is a worthwhile investment if the bike has a decent history. These folks here can walk you through about any problem these bikes can throw at ya. They got me up and running and I'm at the point with the bike where I would jump on it and not worry a bit about taking off for a few days. If the 2nd gear problem has been corrected that is one of the more costly issues with the bike. That's a plus. When looking into tires you will see a lot of opinions. The one thing I look for is load rating. These bikes are heavy and then adding a rider and passenger can add up quick. I'm a fan of the Avon Venoms. I'm on my second set and will buy them again. Great wear, over 18,000 miles on the last set and all weather traction is great. Best wet weather tire I've owned. Some of the things you will proabaly want to address early on is heavier battery cables, an AGM battery, the upgrade fuse panel is a must, (PM skydoc_17 on that. He sells a nice kit), and a few doses of Sea Foam to treat the fuel system to clean it out. Hang around, we will be here to help. Mike

Remember Slip & Slides? (hint hint) Might help.

We're getting a break here in Omaha, Ne. today. It's dropped down to 90 degrees today. Humidity dropped a bit to. I actually had goose bumps on the ride to work this morning from the chilly 77 degrees. Ahhh....bliss I tell ya. And it's only the 3rd of August. What are we in for? No pool at the end of the wooden deck eh? Mike

The biggest drawback I see is the resale issue. But if you are like me, drive 'em until they drop ....... no big deal. If you are comfortable with the current owner and trust the work that has been done I'd feel ok with the purchase. A salvage title in my eyes is always a bargaining chip in the buyers favor to beat on the price. I have seen a lot of nice bikes that were salvaged titled and as that goes, we know a lot of body damage can total a bike and not harm the structure. Cars and trucks I have more concern with due to the weight and structural twisting in a rollover. You get a solid history on the truck and trust the seller ...... it might be fine. Then again.... if you have problems later on, a salvage titled vehicle can be a bear to get rid of. Mike

fuel hose dimensions?
Snaggletooth replied to Abbe's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I replaced all mine with 1/4 inch. Works fine. As far as the breather ..... skydoc_17 has a setup to eliminate the hose all together. That should be listed in the classified ads under his name. (well they were a while back. Shoot him a PM as see what he has) Another option is to do the factory mod to both the breather hose and the drain hose. The attached is poor quality but you should get the idea. A new hose is still available from Yammy and it is a bit shorter than the original. You would need to add a short piece and 90 degree Y connection. The new hose is a lot more flexible and is much easier to work with. You do own a set of 11" needlenose pliers right? Mike- 1 reply

Help rear brake caliper removeal.
Snaggletooth replied to DBOB's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Crack the bleeder open a bit as you try to pry the pads back. It helps prevent any gunge from being forced back into the master also. -
Got me on that one Al. Most the ones I run across are broken or faded almost clear. maybe do a search for Mini Baron lights on one of the sites mentioned.

Now that don't happen very often! LOL. I was in the shop and sat down at the bench to think about where I put them. Looked up at my storage rack and there they were staring at me. So this one is my pick of the litter. Pretty clean with nice surface on the chrome. One nick in the lower edge. From standing height it would not look too bad. Wiring and sockets are good and lights up both bulbs with no flicker. The lenses suck, badly faded, so I keep those for the old candy apple lens project. Let me know if you're interested. Mike

I have a few spares in the shop. Let me take a look at the condition. I'm pretty sure the outer chrome sections all have some minor pitting but can't remember how bad. I see your chrome section is damaged. You need both inner and outer? Lens? I'll post a pic of what I find but it might be tomorrow night before I can do that. Mike

Haven't caught that one yet that I know of. One in CB the other morning early and one was taken out by a car on 60th street here in Omaha a little later same morning. Actually would have been about 20 minutes behind me on the my ride to work. Same route I ride every morning. Been way to many killed this season aready here. Can't blame it all on the cagers either. The way some of the folks are riding is a death wish. Mike

I just ran across this regarding the DUI driver that stuck and killed the four riders last summer from the Omaha and Glennwood, IA area. I knew he pled guilty and got his 50 years for it. Fair enough. But now Iowa has suspended the liquor license of the the store that sold him MORE beer even though the clerk had been warned about the driver being drunk by other motorists that had seen him on the road. He had even been seen hitting a bridge guardrail not far from the store. But they sold him another cold 40 anyway. Ok, suspended.......for three weeks. Three whole weeks. Geesh. Somehow that don't seem like enough to me. MISSOURI VALLEY, Iowa -- Iowa has suspended the liquor license of a convenience store where authorities say a Nebraska man bought beer before a drunken crash that killed four motorcyclists in western Iowa last summer. In a settlement with the Iowa Alcohol Beverages Division, Taylor Oil Company Inc. admits no wrongdoing or guilt. But it doesn't contest the complaint the company sold beer to a person who was intoxicated. The 3-week suspension for the Taylor Quik-Pik store in Missouri Valley begins Thursday and runs until Aug. 18. Andrew Schlichtemeier, of Murray, Neb., was sentenced to 50 years in prison for vehicular homicide. The men killed in the crash were returning from the annual motorcycle rally in Sturgis, S.D.
