Have you replace a coil on your RSV?
Venturing Sole replied to Freebird's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks Goose. Searched quite a few threads previous to my post and saw that the coil may not actually be bad, but as I had the new one in hand, I opted to use it anyway. Cleaned the mounting posts with sandpaper and put a little dielectric grease on them prior to assembly. Reused the plug boot. The smoke was coming from the place you described, in front of the battery cover where the Y-pipe connects to the header flange. Used a mirror to look under the chrome pipe cover, but saw nothing lodged in there. Took the bike for a ride on my street to see if the smoke would go away (by the way, only a trace of smoke coming from the muffler). After 15 minutes of riding (sometimes gentle and sometimes goosing the throttle), the smoke began to come and go and after about 30 minutes, no trace of smoke. Bike seems to have more power...will find out this week during commute if my gas mileage improves. Be happy to send you the coil for testing. PM me your address. I'll cover sending to you if you'll cover sending back if the coil is still serviceable. If the coil is bad, trash it. Thanks again. Was hoping you'd see this one. David -
Anyone have a golf club holder for their Venture?
Venturing Sole replied to GG54172's topic in Watering Hole
I've got this same setup for my golf clubs. It's a cooler rack with an optional 4-leg struts topped off with a U-shaped bracket. I also mounted a light bar. I use a Venturedad receiver hitch. There is some side-to-side wobble while riding and makes the rear end seem a little spongy, but I solved that by attaching bungy cords from my trunk rack to the golf club rack and it rides fine.- 25 replies

Have you replace a coil on your RSV?
Venturing Sole replied to Freebird's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Resurrecting an old, but relevant thread in search of an answer. 2006 2nd Gen. 67000 miles. Been riding on 3 cylinders for about a month (began coincidentally while at Maintenance Day). Mileage went down the toilet and top end power was lousy. Smelled gas all the time. Muffinman helped me a few weeks ago with a color tune (and air filters, radiator flush, oil change, clutch disk change) and we discovered left rear cylinder had no spark. Ordered a new coil which arrived yesterday. Installed it today, and it sparks, but as the engine warms up, there is a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust at the connection about 3 inches from the cylinder where the first clamp attaches. Smells a little like melting rubber or plastic. No obvious wires or tubes resting on the pipes. Afraid something is going to catch fire. Anyone experience this before? Thought maybe a month of unburned fuel/air mixture in the pipes might need to burn off or something, is this normal? Is there a danger of fuel residue in the first few inches of the exhaust catching fire? I'm nervous about riding it. Thanks David -
From Fairfax to Pentagon 5 days a week/50 weeks a year (almost), and the occasional ride with the "Duke". Heated gloves and home made heated jacket get accelerated wear, yet my soldering skills have not improved equally.

M endorsement on lisence............wooo hooo
Venturing Sole replied to painterman67's topic in Watering Hole
I guess I missed why you had to take the test. Did you never have the endorsement or did you have to requalify due to tickets or something? David- 15 replies

Homemade electric clothing
Venturing Sole replied to venturejockey's topic in Poor Man Tips and Fixes
http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=30663&highlight=Heated+clothing Not sure this link will come through correctly, but you can find it in General Tech Talk or use the search feature and type in "DIY Heated Clothing" I ride year round in Northern Virginia. Only missed two days of commuting last year on the RSV due to snow/ice on my street. David -

Always leave mine on reserve (4 years on my new 2006). As others have said, F trip meter comes on at 2 bars. I have repeatedly gone 40-50 miles (not klicks) on the F trip meter. Have not run out yet, although I admit the pucker factor is in overdrive when I get close to 50. Even so, I have never put more than 5.4 gallons in. Usually get about 38-39 mpg (unless I'm riding with Riderduke

I think George had something else on his mind. I got your back Bobby (additional tailgunner duties).

I bought the Electrical Connections kit. Their web site does not list the Venture specific harness, but when you talk to them they know what you need (they did not respond to an email I sent). Kit came with one harness that has the relay, one harness that converts the 5 wire to a 4 wire format (optional depending on what format you tow), and the Venture specific harness. Total cost was about $115 shipped. Does not include the vehicle side 4 wire plug harness which I got at Auto Zone for about $4. Stowing the relay harness and Venture specific harness was a challenge. I stuffed the relay harness on the left behind the battery box and I stuffed the Venture specific harness in front of the battery box after removing the left side cover. I routed the 5 trailer wires through the rubber plug on the plastic seat shield then under the rear seat where I spliced in the vehicle side 4 wire Auto Zone connector, then over the CB radio box and down under the license plate to dangle by the tail light. Took me a few hours to install as I was trying to be creative and hide the wires as much as possible. Had to remove the battery and battery box to get everything routed and stuffed out of the way. Also bought the Rivco cooler rack with golf club frame (about $250). Mounted a light bar I won at last year's MD on the cooler rack and attached a 4 wire plug to get running and brake lights on the back of the rack. I'm happy with it. David

Now that was funny! I've had friends leave their golf partner behind as they drove after their ball, but realizing that Bobby wasn't on the bike and left behind at the gas station was a level beyond. Sorry George, may be a while before that one gets old. :rotf::rotf:

Jim, I have exactly the same problem. Garmin Streetpilot on one "Y" aux branch. Another "Y" aux branch for my iPod. When both were competing with each other, the sound from either was less than if one of them was off. Believe this eventually damaged the audio jack on the Streetpilot since now I can only hear navigation and telephone audio weakly in one headset speaker (not stereo). I have since installed a Sirius satellite radio instead of the iPod on that "Y" branch, but I keep the Streetpilot audio cable unplugged to insure I don't damage the satellite radio. Still have to look into getting the Streetpilot audio jack fixed. The mix-it device looks pretty interesting. Once I get the Streetpilot audio jack fixed, think I'll be able to convince Susan to spring for the Mix-it if it gets me back to a point where I can use the bluetooth to receive calls simultaneous with the Sirius being on. Gotta crack my fairing open...
Venturing Sole replied to rumboogy's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The chrome plastic windshield trim piece has little plastic tabs to mate into slots on the fairing. The tabs break easily when you try to put the trim piece back on. Both of mine have broken after numerous fairing splits. There's a do-it-yourself fix somewhere on the site if your reasonably crafty. I haven't bothered and the trim piece still stays secure. Bigger problem I have is the windshield mounting bar on either end has broken from the fairing mounts, so the only thing holding my windshield is the six screws attached to the mounting bar and the mounting bar is zip tied to the fairing in the center. -
I have a Garmin Streetpilot 2820 on the left handlebar. I also have a Sirius Stiletto 2 satellite radio on the right handlebar. I've noticed in the streetpilot literature that with the right antenna, it can receive XM (for traffic, weather and music). Since I already have a Sirius subscription, I've been trying to figure out if the Garmin can receive a Sirius signal (if so I would consider putting the Sirius radio in my car and using the Garmin as the satellite receiver on the 2Gen). Web research is leading me to think the answer is no, something about XM and Sirius having different reception constraints. Are there any experts here that can definitively say either way what the capability is between Garmin and Sirius? David

New cable no Cruise Control
Venturing Sole replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I think Don posted on the same symptom after installing Flanders Bars and I encountered the same problem when I installed my Flanders Bar...which requires replacing the throttle cables. When you remove the throttle cable linkage pully cover, there is a spring inside which has to be oriented correctly upon re-assembly. The spring has a straight tail on it which has to be hooked on the pully wheel to allow set/cancel features to work correctly. Hopefully I've correctly attached a photo for clarity. -
Wondering if anyone experienced something similar or can confirm diagnosis. 2006 RSV. 46K miles. Many miles and a few years ago , I inserted a three-way stereo aux line splitter inside the faring...1) to GPS, 2) to Satellite radio/iPod, 3) to cassette aux jack. Also have a Buddy Rich cable. Stereo sound through any of the three stereo aux extension cables worked OK for most of the time, though have had to live with much lower volume levels, especially if two items were powered on at the same time (I.e. GPS and iPod) compared to the volume level of the AM/FM radio. Over time, the audio from the GPS has developed a lot of snap/crackle/pop and the audio from the iPod would drop in and out of the headset speakers (sometimes left speaker, sometimes right speaker) - not getting complete stereo. I would jiggle the male jack into the GPS or iPod and could hear the stereo fidelity cut in and out. I would replace the aux extension cable and use dielectric grease and everything would be good for a few months. Problem progressed such that I can't get stereo fidelity out of either GPS or iPod (I.e. half the sound in only one speaker). to the point where jiggling the extension cables doesn't fix it and replacing the extension cables doesn't fix it. I also replaced the three-way splitter to no avail. Through process of elimination I have found that the female aux pigtail that is hard wired into the radio is not putting out stereo sound, so every splitter and extension cable downstream is also not putting out stereo sound. Would I be correct in believing that the radio aux pigtail has failed? Should this be covered under warranty? Major bummer. Anyone experienced anything similar? Thanks David

Heated gear -controller mounting?
Venturing Sole replied to supersail's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I have the female battery-side connector zip tied just in front of the seat on the tank bra facing left and I have my temp controller in the belt pouch which I clip to the left waist adjustment strap of my jacket. Easily reached while riding and if I forget to unplug as I get off, the plug can pull away. I use the Warm Gear gloves and Heat-troller and like them very much.- 13 replies

It's been a few years since we've had a white Christmas in Northern VA. I'm thinking this batch will last long enough. Spent Staurday and Sunday manhandling the snow blower on my 400' driveway plus my Mom's driveway.

Northern Virginia - Wiring RSV for towing trailer
Venturing Sole replied to Gamecock's topic in Trailer Talk
Allright Riverdance. Geez, give a wino a break (by the way, still not sure if I saw a leak on your bike . But hang on, I'm still ironing the bus tracks out of my clothes. And Sleeperhawk...there goes that housewarming gift I was going to bring down next time. Back on topic - I sent a PM to Gamecock setting him straight that I don't have trailer wiring on my bike (yet). If we could figure out how to get Brad to migrate toward the right coast instead of toward the left coast, we be sitting pretty. Id -

I'm sooo bummed. Was leaving for work this morning and for some idiotic reason decided to try a slow tight circle turn in my driveway. Wound up three quarters of the way through the turn and knew I couldn't stay on the driveway. I stopped, but was facing downhill. Tried to duck walk the bike across a corner of the driveway and lost my balance on the sloping soft gravel ground. Bike fell to the downhill side. Took me two hours to get it upright with a winch and back onto the blacktop driveway. Major gravel rash on the left side of the front faring. Then had to bleed the clutch because it was spongy (probably introduced some air into the line when the bike was "upside down"). I'm such an idiot! Oh, and my back aches from trying to manhandle the beast upright. Anyone know of an inexpensive black cherry front faring? Doh!

ipod with gloves - touch vs nano or classic?
Venturing Sole replied to bamico's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
I have a 5th generation video iPod (30 GB). Only have about 2600 songs (and a few movies I don't really watch) and still have 1/3 capacity remaining. I listen to it every day on my commute. Rain or shine, cold or hot. Have many different types of gloves depending on the conditions. Most of my gloves will work the control wheel and buttons, but it's mostly a function of heat. If the hands and gloves are warm enough, the controls respond. If the heat from my hands can't transmit through the gloves (like when it's raining), then not so much. Good luck with your choice. -
Yup, yup. Can't wait. Will bring my sound machine to mask the sound of snoring in the bunkhouse. Id
