Side Stand length.
Jerry W replied to johnny canuck's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
The '96 does set different than the newer RSTD's. I had a '96 before I bought my '06 RSV and there is quite a bit of difference in the height of the bikes. When I first bought the RSV and walked up to step over the saddle my short legged self kinda' high centered. That is part of the reason I was very comfortable in lowering the RSV and not being concerned about loosing any ground clearance. I am thinking the stand on the origional Royal Stars are about 3" shorter than those on the newer ones. -
Side Stand length.
Jerry W replied to johnny canuck's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Johnny, The origional Royal Star ( 1996 - 2001) had the shorter kick stand, the bike sits quite a bit lower than the present models. I believe the stand is right at 3" shorter on the origional Royal Star. You might send a note to Pegscraper, he rides a 1996. -
I am thinking the link you were talking about refered to the origional Royal Stars, 1996 - 2001. The kick stands on those bikes were approximately 3" shorter than on the RSV and the 2005 to present RSTD.

I don't know about the price, seems like a waste of money to me. I always thought the $150 tennis shoes and the $20 helmet made more sense. Going to their web site now.

Carburator adjustment to sea level
Jerry W replied to SkyKing's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I don't know if it will solve your problem, but you might sync the carbs for starters. All it takes is a long screwdriver, a Morgan carbtune and a few minutes of time. If you don't have access to the carbtune, I am going to be in Rockport for a couple of days next week and I can bring my carbtune with me. I will be in Rockport Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. Let me know if you need to do that and we can set something up.- 12 replies

Changed the oil, sycned the carbs, cleaned the air filters, checked the pressure in the tires and all that kind of stuff. Monday morning a buddy and I leave on our annual "boys week out" road trip. Last year we rode to Mesa, Arizona. This year we are headed South to Rockport, Texas. Life is good!

AIS Question
Jerry W replied to David R. Vincent's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I took the bike for a couple of hot laps to warm it up before I synched the carbs and plugging the AIS took care of the backfiring. I am thinking the carbs being out of synch were part of the backfiring because the bike had been back to the dealership because of the floats sticking causing serious gas leaks, when I checked the carbs, they were way off and the bike has been backfiring much worse since the carbs were worked on. However, it has always backfired on deaccleration and now has no backfire. Hope this helps. Anyone in the Borger area wasnts to snych their carbs, let me know and we will set something up.- 9 replies

AIS Question
Jerry W replied to David R. Vincent's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I got it plugged, but haven't taken it out yet. I purchased the tapered rubber plugs at Home Depot. I bought 3/4" & 13/16" just to save a trip. I used the 13/16" and 7/8" might be even better. The 3/4" were too small. The plugs are about $1.00 each. I am going to synch the carbs today.- 9 replies

Mike, Here are the pics. that I had posted earlier to help figure out how to mount the brake relocation kit when lowereing the rear of the RSV. The instructions aren't too clear and since you are getting a used kit, I am not thinking there are any instructions.
-
As I stated earlier in this post, I have lowered both front and rear of my RSV and have no regrets. I will take a picture of how the caliper relocation kit fits and post it on here, maybe that will help in mounting yours. This modification may not be for everyone, but my posts are from my personal experience and I am satisfied with the results. The lowering modification is easily reversible if you are not satisfied. I am thinking give it a try and make your decision based on experience.

AIS Question
Jerry W replied to David R. Vincent's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Any of you guys happen to know what size rubber plugs it takes to plug the lines? I am going to plug mine and would like to pick up what I needed before I start. Thanks.- 9 replies

By what I read, the reason they are struggling financially is the mulitmillion dollar contracts they gave Howard Stern, Martha Stewart, etc. They were on track to get back in good financial shape, but recent economic conditions have hampered that. The reason they are considering filing bankruptcy is that it will allow them to get out of some of the contracts with Stern and others. Anyway, this is the way I understood the information I have been able to come up with.

I have the Baron's lowering kit on my RSV, however I lowered the front first and rode it like that for a few thousand miles before lowering the rear. I just lowered the rear last week and haven't had a chance to get in much riding, but have not noticed anything that would make me want to change it back. Lowering the front is free using the directions on this site and I like the feel of a lower bike. Keep in mind if you lower both front and rear, you will need to shorten the kickstand.
-
What I meant by taking 3/4" out of the kickstand was - down at the lower end of the stand we cut a piece out of the stand 7/8" long, the drilled into the foot and the long piece of the stand and threaded the inside of each hole. We then threaded the inside of each hole and screwed a 1/4" bolt into the stand leaving a 1/8" gap when we lined the kickstand back up correctly. The gap was to allow the weld to burn in for maximum stregnth. Normally chrome pops off when cut or welded, however the Yamaha kickstands are really good stuff and is very hard to cut even with a band saw and the chrome does not pop off when welded so we welded it back with a stainless rod, dressed it a little with a dremel and buffed it out. If you look really close at the close up picture of the stand, you can see where we made the weld. I say we, I have a buddy who is pretty handy with metal and he actually did most of the work on the modificaton of the stand. Did I mention he rides a Harley? I still have my stock stand, if anyone needs one cut down I will ask my buddy what he would charge and I could have him modify my extra stand and we could do a swap, I would only charge for his labor and postage and you send me your kickstand after you receive the shortened one. That way you will not be without a kickstand. I would have to have the money up front to pay my friend. If you need any more infomation or better pictures, let me know.

There doesn't seem to be much information here for the removal of the kickstand, so here is what I ended up doing. I discovered it is much easier to remove the two bolts holding the left floorboard on than to try and disconnect the shifting linkage. Just remove the two bolts and drop the floorboard, the shifter bracket is attached to the floorboard and this will drop the linkage out of the way to allow for the removal of the bolt holding the kickstand. I took 3/4" out of my kickstand and that is probably the minimum if you lower both front and rear of the bike. I will try to attach some pics to show how the bike sits as well as pictures of the kickstand. Any questions, let me know.
-
I lowered the front and rear. If you only lower the front you do not need to shorten the stand, if you lower both you need to shorten the stand.
-
I have lowered the front and rear of my RSV and now need to shorten the kickstand. The shifting linkage prevents the removal of the bolt that holds the kickstand on. Anyone have any experience in changing out the kickstand? I am not knowing if it is better to disconnect the shifting linkage toward the rear or drop the floorboard. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Had front lowered by dealer
Jerry W replied to phochief's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Ok, I lowered the rear of my RSV and here are my thoughts. I had already lowered the front and noticed some difference in handling and a little difference in seat height. After I lowered the rear, I didn't notice much difference in handling but the difference in seat height is very noticable. I rode about 75 miles today after the modification and do not plan to go back to stock height. I am not trying to talk anyone into or out of making this modification, just giving some feedback based on experience. I don't ride as agressive as some and had a 1996 Royal Star for 10 years before buying the 2006 RSV. The Royal Star sits quite a bit lower than the RSV and I really liked that bike. Maybe if I hadn't had the Royal Star before buying the RSV, I would have been fine with the height. Anyway, I just like the feel of the bike being a little lower and have not notice anything that gave me any concern. I rode the bike about 8,000 miles at stock height. Another 6,000 miles with the front lowered and now have lowered the rear and am very satisfied with the results. Again, this is my experience and do not care to get into an argument on whether it is a smart thing to do or not. I stated I would post when I got the mods done and here it is. -

If the fork tubes are 1" above the triple tree, the front end has been lowered. The forks are flush from the factory. I have lowered mine and am going to lower the rear end using the barons kit this weekend, I will let you know how much difference I notice. -
The flaming and bashing are the reason I don't usually sign in and have pretty much quit posting. I will look you up next time I an in your area, anytime you are up in the panhandle, give me a call. I have beer.

Ok, I have the IQ of a turnip when it comes to technology, well not just tech. but we will hold it to that here. I have a Zumo 550 which I have hard wired on the bike (thanks to instruction from Sawhorse) and would like to add the XM. Can you tell me exactly what I need to buy and do in order to get XM on the bike? Well, I know you can. Thanks in advance. Oh, it's ok to laugh.

I also try to stay in KOA's, they have clean showers and washing machines which reduce the amount of clothes you have to pack. I carry a light weight sleeping bag since most KOA cabins are heated and air conditioned. I also don't ride as hard or far as some, I generally stop about every 100 miles and get water etc. I don't usually ride more that 450 miles a day and many times only go 300 before pulling in, depending on where the KOA's are.

Have you lowered the front end as well? If I understand correctly, you have only lowered the rear end using the links and went with the CT and noticed improved low speed handling. I am seriously considering the CT on the rear of mine when it comes time for new tires.
