fuel pump replacement
Jethroish replied to warriorhoneybee's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Ponch had a post some time back about pumps. here it is. http://venturerider.org/forum/showpost.php?p=380679&postcount=13 -
about 10 hours in the bike saddle and about 10 hours in the other saddle.

Gave the idle screw 1/4 turn and blew out both air filters (not that I think that had anything to do with, but since I was messing with the bike.)

Took a 2 hour over night in a C172 years ago. Ran great there. Next morning it would not start. Pulled the plugs, ALL were loaded up.

Stuck in traffic today going to work. Some idiot decided to park upsdie down on the interstate. anyhow, bike stalled 3 or 4 times while idling. Started right back up, but it was like some one just turned off the key. As long ans I held the throttle crakced a little or pulled the choke a hair, it was fine. Is it just running too lean? Any over heat or lack of good cool intake air issue? Thanks

My OEM D404s went 13,000 miles and they were at the wear bars. Next were E3s. they went 19,000 and were just a hair from the wear bars. I am now at 37,000 total miles (15,000 on Es) and doing quite well. most of the riding has been solo.

Since I had things apart, I put in a new fuel filter before buttoning everything up to take it to dealer. Started the bike up and the original pump seems to be working normally. Rode around the neighborhood a little (2 or 3 miles) in 1st and 2nd gears to keep fuel demand up. Never had a hesitation.

Yep, it's under warranty. Filter is not restricted at all. the pump is getting weak and intermittent. Talked to local stealer. Their story was this: "We have to have the bike to determine the problem. Our mechanic got injured over the long weekend and we are very busy. Could get to your bike by the end of the week. If it is a pump problem, that is a special order and will take 4 days to get."

Loss of power on freeway
Jethroish replied to carman53402's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I'll say that is mine was doing. Looking backa week or so, mine seemed to be "missing" as highway speeds, ocassionally. yesterday it lost all power. First thought was the filter and/or bad gas. Got the filter out this morning and it is clean and free flowing. Fuel pump is intermittent. Works good enough for idle and light throttle stuff, but has gotten weak and cannot keep up with demand of accel or highway speeds. OEM pump is $209 to $310. Mr Gasket elec pump is $42 at most any auto part store and fits in the same spot. -
Oil filter brand

I have used NAPA Gold or Wix (same filters) on my bike since new. Also use Wix on my Dodge Cummins with 195,000 miles. I will stick with the Wix/NAPA. -
Thanks Joe. I thought the same thing. Was talking to my dad and even said that to him. Seems any low pressure pump should work. Have to go to the auto parts store anyhow. Gonna see what they have.

Caller the stealership. They won't order pump without 1) having the bike to verify warranty replacement or, 2) I prepay for the pump. Their mechanic got injured over the weekend and is out a day or 2, and they are busy so cannot get to the bike until the end of the week. If they determine the pump is bad, it will take another 3 or 4 days to get new pump. Bike seems to idle just fine with no 'hot" pump. Again, speculation is that the higher demand for fuel at cruise/accel. is straining the pump. I hate to be without my bike for 2 weeks. Found a new OEM pump online for $209. Tempted to bite a $200 bullet. Next closest dealer is an hour away.

Thanks Joe. Just did a little more testing. Removing the pump and using fuel line in a glass jar, it seems to be pumping. The pump itself is getting VERY hot. To the point I cannot hold it nor barely touch it. Is that normal? My speculation is that the pump is overheating and shutting down. such a wonderful intermittent problem that the stealership will most likely say they cannot find a problem.

Noticed bike losing power a little. Yesterday it gave up 1.5 miles from the house. Thought it might be clogged filter. Nope. But I will change it anyhow since I got it out. Bypassed the pump and bike fires right up. WILL NOT run if fuel lines are connected to pump. Is it safe to run it by gravity feed?

I would have to say it depends on the $$ situation at the time. If I needed tires badly, I might. My bike came with 404s stock. I really had no complaints with the ride or handling with those tires. The life of the 404s is short. I guess you have to do the math. 404s for $160 and 8000 to 10000 miles or E3s, Venoms, Mich., for $250 and 18000 to 20000 miles. don't forget to add mount and balance. Twice for the 404s compared to others.

My dad has a 2010 Vulcan Voyager and he told me there are a few VV owners having the same problem with the Metzlers on that bike too.

My last E3 lasted for 19,000 miles. I NEVER felt as tho it were going to slip. Put on another E3.

I have a radial around my middle. :rotfl:

Figured there was no sense joining yet another forum. All the smart folks are here. Got a 2003 Honda Recon atv. One of the headlight is very dim. Is it most likely just need a new bulb or is that light not getting enough voltage. No, I have not yet swapped bulbs to check, so maybe I should not even be posting this yet.
