R6 & De-link Brake Questions
luke000 replied to luke000's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks for the quick response! What did you use to block off the front port on the rear master? My project for tomorrow (besides picking up my wheels i dropped off to get my new tires mounted and working on my mufflers) is to try and remove a bolt the PO stripped the head on for the front master cap So if SHTF and I cant figure out a way to get it out i may be in the market for a new master anyways -
OK so I have 3 (probably simple) questions about doing an upgrade to R6 front brakes with stainless lines; I am also going to delink the system. I am going to order the calipers tomorrow. #1 As for the master cylinder will my current one work (IE is mine a 14mm or a 5/8)? #2 When I remove a line from the rear master cylinder what port will I use for the new brake and what port will I block off? And what kind of bolt do I use to block that port off? #3 For the front lines is a V-Max splitter necessary to use or can I use something like this https://www.denniskirk.com/russell/brake-line-fitting-male-3-t-junction-r4298c.p191349.prd/191349.sku OR just run a double banjo bolt and 2 seperate lines from the master to the calipers? I looked and could not find a clear answer to my question, and I know they are probably simple to answer. Thanks ahead of time everyone! And yes I know I said I have 3 questions and there was closer to 4

My bad, it is the 2 tone brown. And so starts the process of not being able to sleep at night until I pick it up! (Every time I get a bike this happens) -

Looked at both bikes today. And i put some cash down on the 1986! We settled at 2 grand. I take delivery Wednesday!!!! Its in very nice shape, it needs tires and I want to re-work the brakes (possible R6 calipers, SS lines, de-link them), Im sure there is also a lot of small stuff i will need to do, battery, cleaning, throttle cables, sea foam, plugs. I dont have any pictures of the bike yet, It is a gold & sliver, good chrome and paint, 1 small crack on the right upper fairing by the CB. If anyone has any questions about the bike let me know, otherwise I will update when I get the bike home. Also can anyone tell me if the steering bearings are loose ball or tapered roller bearings (I might want to upgrade them)? -

Well, I am going to see both the bikes this Saturday. Anyone...What are the major (or not so major) between the 1986 and 1990 models (both Royals) is age going to be my main deciding point (the 86 is 1200 dollars cheaper) -

IM BAAAACK! I am about to finish up my semester at collage tomorrow, so i will be home and i have 2 more ventures I am trying to set up looking at this weekend. The one is a 1990 Royale with 34k, he is asking $3500 OBO (will need to knock that down to something I can afford) and the other is a 1986 Royale with 33k, asking $2300. I have yet to see a picture of either bike. My question is this, and I am sure it is answered a million times but i cant find it, does the 1986 model have the 2nd gear problem? I saw that "the 2nd gear problem was fixed AFTER 1986" does that include the 1986 models or not? I am assuming it was fixed when the 1300 engine was produced but you know what they say when you assume. -

Well long story short, i was not able to get that blue venture the guy didn't want my truck but told me if i could get the cash he would sell me the bike for 1500. I quickly dropped the price of the truck way below what it was worth and sold it (lost my a$$). called the guy a day and a half later as soon as i sold my truck, told him i got the cash and could come pick it up ASAP. He told me he sold it the day before and hung up. So now I have sold my truck and don't have enough to buy a halfway decent bike . So Im going to sell some other stuff I have laying around, including my Virago in the spring. and pick something up latter this year. Well thank you everyone for your input. I now know exactly what i am looking for when i see it, a decent MKII. When I pick something up Ill be back around for more help! -

Well i looked at the two ventures today. the 87 was MUCH better, the 83 was in less than great shape, lots of corrosion on the engine cases and other parts, Front brake fluid was low and dirty, and clutch fluid was very dirty and almost completely out of the reservoir. and on the right side brake disc was covered in a black fluid mostly dripping out of the caliper (did not want to taste or smell so im assuming DOT fluid) and oil on fork stanchions = a pass. The 87 was in good shape, needs tires soon (good tread but original '87 rubber), a little dirty, mechanically solid, service records, needs some polishing and very minor cosmetic TLC, has a set of kuryakyn footpegs that make the ride comfortable (otherwise very similar riding position to my current virago) The bikes owner will take a look Thursday at my truck and if he gives it the thumbs up I will have my new bike! PS the guy with the goldwing never got back to me. -

Well, Now chalk it up to a 3rd bike I am going to look at now, 1987 Venture. 22000 Miles. I am going to take a look at it first on Friday morning. Are they about the same problems i should look out for (2nd gear, Dead TCI, frame cracks, bad clutch master cylinder) or are those more common found on '83 and other MK1's VS this MK2? Is this one much better of a bike? What are the big differences between the '83 and '87 besides the extra 100cc? ****Also the owner said something about it needing new coils because it seems like its lacking a little low end power, he does have the new coils just has not put them on (i am willing & expecting to do a fair amount of work to whatever bike I do buy**** -

Well I am still getting excited about the Venture (along with the 1966 Suzuki B100P). Thank you everyone for your help. I attached a few pictures of the two bikes I might be trading my truck for. I still have my truck on Craigslist and today i was offered a 1984 Honda Goldwing Aspencade GL1200 with 54000 miles. This bike also peeks my curiosity a lot. Does anyone have any (bias or non-bias) opinions on this bike? I have yet to see any pictures of it but i was told its in good shape and runs good. How do they compare in your guy's eyes? BTW I am dead set on a Touring bike unless a 1995+ Honda shadow pops up. -

Thanks everybody for your input! TX2, I am more than aware of the cost of insurance on one of these, as for mechanical work needing to be done, probably my favorite part of motorcycles is working on them, I don't care what work it is i will work on almost anything, I am that kind of person who always needs a project going and plan to spend MANY hours working on the bike over the winter and early spring. I am not getting this size of bike to show off my skills (only pulled over once for "lack of exhaust" on my truck ) The CB550 was just a quick project that i never had intentions of riding much just and opportunity that fell into my lap and i saw a good opportunity to make some quick $$$ (and boy did I) and to pass my time last winter. SilvrT, I am studying Mechanical Engineering technology, so i might get a machining class in but that's about it. Thanks everyone for welcoming me, I love my virago but i want something where i can stretch my legs out and enjoy 3-500 mile trips i have planned. -
Let me introduce myself, My names Luke, Im 18, in collage at Michigan Tech, and have been riding bikes for 2 years now. I have had 3 bikes in that time my first (and current) 1982 Virago 750, an old Honda XL18s basket case i put back together and traded that for a 1974 Honda CB550 cafe'd it (http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=32766.0), rode it for a month and a half and sold it. I have always kinda liked the touring bikes (venture being my favorite that i could afford), and am looking to get something a little more practical for a long haul or two and I am a big guy (6'3, 200 lbs) so i want something bigger than my Virago, I have a chance to trade my extra truck (long story how it became extra) for a 1983 Venture with 24000 miles and a 1966 Suzuki B100P. I am excited, already have plans for the Venture. If at least the venture checks out i should have 2 more bikes in my collection in less than a week! Does anyone have know any specific things i should inspect hard/ problem area's on this bike when i check it out? Also I will have some cash and time over the winter to do some work and upgrade the bike over the winter is there any upgrades you would suggest i make (GPS, driving lights, tapered steering bearings...anything)
