What year R1 Calipers should I be looking for? Here is some that I found this morning. Will they work? http://www.ebay.com/itm/97-Yamaha-YZF1000-YZF1000R-YZF-1000R-R1-Thunder-Front-Brake-Calipers-/200952556234?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ec9b4aaca&vxp=mtr

I have the Pirelli MT66s on mine now. They replaced the Dunlop E3s and they cost me about $250 for both. I replaced the rear first and then went on a trip. The rear has about 4000 miles on it already and shows no signs or wear at all. I recently replaced the front as well. I have read that the Pirellis don't get that great of mileage. Well the E3 I pulled off the front had plenty of tread left (looks like maybe 3000 miles or so) but it was causing some funny feelings when riding. I constantly checked the pressure in it and the tire looked fine. No funny wear or cupping or anything visible. But when I replaced it with the Pirelli, the bike rode like a dream again. I was planning on going back to the E3 after wearing out the Pirellis, but depending on how long the Pirellis last, I figure why pay more for the E3 when I only get maybe 2000 miles more from them and more money. The Pirellis have done wonderful in all weather conditions and corner well.

I am sitting here at work and have found a place that might have bearings in stock that I can pick up today rather than ordering. I am getting my new tire tonight and wanted to get it mounted tomorrow morning but decided to do the bearings as well. Only problem is I didn’t order bearings in time and don’t have them. I would love to just pull the wheel once. So my question is can anybody tell me the dimensions of the front wheel bearings for a 2nd gen? Looking it up, I see the part number as B6004. The problem is that I can’t find anything to cross reference it with so I am not sure what to ask for when I call. I can however pick the size I want and see if it is in stock. They have Timken, SKF, NTN, Dayton, and FAG bearings so if anybody knows the exact number of any of those, that would be good as well. Here are 2 I found that I think are it and in stock. Not sure though. http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/wwg/compareItemsRender.shtml Thanks

I have a Pirelli on the rear and have had no problems with it at all. Have 3000+ miles so far and it doesn't look worn at all. Has handled well in all weather. Tracks straight. I just ordered the front as well this morning. I figure if I don't like them or they don't last long, they were cheap enough to try.

Sorry for bringing up an old thread. But I am having a sloppy feeling in my front end. I have done the tests and things feel ok. Front end feels very loose. Recent maintenance includes new Hagon rear shock, new Pirelli rear tire, and new rear pads and rotor. It felt great for a few weeks and then the front end started feeling extremely loose. The reason I dug up this thread was because it talks about the locking tab on the steering head nuts. Looking at the pics it seems the locking tab should be locked in both nuts. Mine is not. It is in a groove on the top nut and then rests on the outside of the bottom nut. Now I am thinking maybe it should be in a groove on the bottom as well. I can post a pic when I get home today. Just some other factors. Dunlop E3 on the front (soon to be replaced but still in good shape). New Hagon shock (Everything is tight and seems to be working with it). Leveling links (Some have said with the aftermarket shock they have removed the links). Front tire pressure right around 42. Rear tire pressure right around 42. Tire pressures have been at those pressures since I got the bike. 0 PSI in the front shocks (been that way since I got the bike). And when I say loose, I mean very light feeling. Slow speeds now take more effort. Curves still feel ok (no wobble or anything). Straight line a pain in the a^^. Feels like the bike really wants to wander. I am going to try to tighten up the head nuts this weekend but other than that, any suggestions.

What Hagon Shock settings are you using?
Ventureless replied to rwven's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I installed a Hagon not long ago as well. Immediate difference. I just left whatever settings were on it when shipped and I feel like it is perfect for me. I got the HD spring and I am right at 300 pounds. Now after reading this, I am thinking of removing the leveling links. I like the sporty feel of the bike, but now I am having a loose feeling in the front end. I have checked everything and nothing is loose. Tire pressure and fork pressures are good. So now I am wondering if it is just the leveling links making it feel this way. -
Congrats!. I actually love the Road Glides. Only complaint I would have is the 103 motor. If I could find a nice one with the 96", I would think about it. From what I have read and heard, the 103" motor is having some issues. Even the police departments around here have been turning all their 103s back in because of so many problems. Not sure what they are replacing them with, but definitely not happy with the 103".

First of all thanks again Freebird for the offer. New Hagon shock is on and all I have to say is damn. Just fell in love with the bike all over. It honestly rides better now than my Concours (c10) sport tourer. It is amazing the difference. For anybody on the fence about a new Hagon, I would say well worth the cost. The only downfall would be waiting for it to be built and delivered. Luckily they had one in stock and I had it in less than a week.

Sounds good. See you then!

Anymore on this?

Replacing 2005 RSTD shocks - suggestions?
Ventureless replied to Lone Eagle's topic in Watering Hole
If you call Hagon LLC in California ASAP, you might have it by the end of next week. I called others and was told 8 weeks for delivery. I called Christina at Hagon in Cali and they had the shock with heavy duty spring in stock. Supposedly it shipped yesterday after I ordered it and I will have it here in Virginia by next Friday. $469 shipped. -
I agree!! I have been to one meet and eat here in VA and met some great people and had a great time. I look forward to coming years and more events especially Don's MD next year.

I think I am going to take you up on your offer. I got another email from Hagon saying that the springs they use for the uprated shocks were on back order. They are supposedly available now and it may not be as long as expected now. I guess we will see. Getting ready to order it now. I might still go look at the Vstroms as they are a hell of a deal for the price. $10K for a new bike and that is with side bags and going with a 6 year unlimited mileage warranty. Not sure I would be happy with that as my only bike though. Being 6'4" and pretty hefty (read fat), the RSV just fits me perfectly. And to me it handles great when everything is in working order. AT times I ride it as hard as I did my Kawasaki Concours when I had it. Don I will send a PM with my info. And I will also reimburse the shipping to me as well. I have no problems with that since you are being so kind to let me use the shock.
-
I appreciate the offer sir, but with my luck right now, your shock would blow out as well and I would be replacing mine and yours. While I am here I will give a little update. Pumped the shock up to 40-45 and rode to work. 27 miles later I pull into work and the shock has no air at all. It also rode like sh^t. SO it looks like I will be driving the SUV for now. Called Hagon again and was told the estimated delivery date would be September 23. Works is about a week earlier. And I am not buying a stock shock and biting this bullet again. So it may be going. I am going to look at some bikes this weekend and seeing what kind of trade in value I can get. Not saying I will go through with it because I love the RSV, but I need a ride. Having the bike sit for 2 months doesn't cut it for me. If anyone might have any interest in a great running 99 RSV with a blown shock and lots of accessories and extras to go with it, let me know and I will send all the info.

I noticed the same with mine, but it ended up being the fairing that was slightly further back some how on one side. It gave the appearance of the bar being bent or crooked.

Well I have contacted both works and Hagon. Works is about $900 and at least 6 weeks before I will see the shock. Hagon has the regular shock for about $400 and the upgraded for about $500. For those of you with a Hagon, did you buy the normal or upgraded? The lady is telling me that with my weight (300lbs) and no more than 100 pounds of cargo (always solo) for a total of 400 lbs, I need the upgraded. Yet they used to tell people that the original shock was good to 420. I am asking because it seems the regular is almost immediately available (2 weeks roughly) while the upgraded will be 6-8 weeks before I would get it. So with either Works or Hagon, I will be losing the rest of the summer riding season. I have ruled out the Works as I have a $3000 bike and can't see paying almost a 1/3 of that on just a shock. And waiting almost 2 months for the Hagon does not seem like an option either. As much as I hate to say it, I might be looking at a new bike this weekend. A somewhat local (90 miles away) shop in neighboring W Va has some good deals on new (2012) Vstrom 1000 Adventure bikes. It would be strange going back to a sport touring style bike, but for $10K out the door for a brand new bike with side bags, top case, heated grips, brush guards, hand guards, adjustable shield, and more, it seems like a hell of a deal. Especially if they give me a good trade value on the Venture. Plus they have $400 cash back and 0% financing for 60 months right now. Would I regret it, probably. But I can always find another Venture later.

I agree with you about keeping my equipment in good repair. But I also know that the RSV is my main (although not my only) transportation. And I also know there will be risk involved in continuing to ride it with the shock. But I will accept that risk and slow down and be more careful on my 30 mile each way commute down a pretty much straight highway. No 60 or 70 mph curves for me until it is replaced.

Yes and that is what I thought was the problem coming home from work last Friday. But apparently not.

Perfect that is what I wanted to hear. Like I said it is a pretty straight shot to work and I go in at about 3:30 AM with no traffic and leave at about 1PM with very minimal traffic so I can usually go as slow or as quick as I want without fear of getting run over. And other than the highway on/off ramps, no real curves to speak of.

I just returned a week ago from a trip and the bike did great. I go out yesterday to throw the cover over it for the coming rain and noticed the dreaded puddle under the rear shock. I did notice last Friday that it was riding funny on the way home from work but just thought maybe low tire or something quick and easy (and cheap). Well apparently not. So I will be looking for a shock (probably works or something similar), but in the meantime while waiting for the new one, can I still ride. With the size of the puddle, I highly doubt there is any fluid left to leak out and lube the rear tire. And I am sure it will bottom out. But I ride pretty much every day to and from work and like the MPGs better than the SUV. It is all pretty much straight smooth highway on my 30 mile commute each way. Might be a crappy ride, but at least I could still ride. I think.
