front fork replacment
rhncue replied to rhncue's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I picked this front end up last night but it never had the top triple tree. I checked part numbers between the 83 and 87 and although the lower trees are the same the upper has a different part number. Does anyone know the difference between the two and will the one off of my 83 work OK? Also, will the Super Brace off of my 83 fit the new front end? Dick -
Broken C.L.A.S.S. display
rhncue replied to 83VR3711's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yes, they are all interchangeable. Dick -
The repair manual says: 1. Remove the required fairing. 2. Disconnect the stator coil leads from the voltage regulator and connect the pocket tester as shown. If the resistance does not equal the specified value, the stator coil is defective and should be replaced. There are also pictures showing the procedure. Dick

I've got an 83 royal that has the hydraulic dampers removed for better front brakes. I just acquired a 87 complete fork assembly. This is the triple trees down including wheel, calipers, rotors and the front master cylinder. Mechanically I'm sure I won't have much trouble changing one set for the other but my question is: How do I hook up the new electric dampers? I've read some back posts but they are not very clear on what needs to be done. Any one changed theirs over and has some tips? I would appreciate it. Also, will the new Progressive springs I just put into my original forks work in the new ones? Dick

Weak front brakes
rhncue replied to algie1100's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My experience is just the opposite of yours. My foot break by itself will just slow me down where as my single front brake will lock the front wheel if I'm not going very fast and really does a good job of stopping the bike at speed. Dick -
stupid dealer
rhncue replied to MikeM8560's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I would have stopped payment through the credit card company. The only reason I could possibly believe anyone would consider buying a tire through a dealer at their inflated prices would be because you never wanted the aggravation of removing and reinstalling. Dick -
Last night while traveling around Cincinnati The cheapest I seen was 2.06. Hoping it gets to 1.99 by Sunday so that I can celebrate. Dick

Odyssey bat check
rhncue replied to rhncue's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Well, I got it back charging again. It appears that the second reg/rec has a defective regulator. I tried a number of tests from the "Electrix fault finding chart" http://www.electrosport.com/technical-resources/library/diagnosis/fault-finding-guide.php And finally decided to try the old reg/rec again. The bike charged nicely when I hooked it up so I replaced the the reg/rec with the original. I ended up putting bullet connectors on the three white wires from the stator as I was having to cut and re-solder over and over running test to correct this problem. Dick -
My charging system on my 83 went berserk about a month ago. Suddenly my volt meter dropped very low while riding. Got back to my shop and the next day I checked the voltage on each of the white wires while the bike was running and it was very erratic. I ordered a new stator and last weekend I got around to putting it in. When I pulled the old stator out it looked like new so I ran the tests like the manual says. Checked the white wires against each other and they came up with the correct .4 something ohms and the short test showed that the stator was good. I put the bike back together using the old stator and then found that the plug from the reg/rec going to the harness was badly melted. Not the white wires from the stator but the red ones going from the reg/rec to the harness. I put on a new plug from an old harness and I installed another reg/rec that I had. I started the bike and it charged normally. A couple days later The voltage dropped way down again so I turned around and was heading home when suddenly it started charging again. Now last night it started discharging again so today I checked all of the plugs, fuses and such to no avail. Before tearing apart again I would like to make sure the battery is not bad. It is one year old but since it is sealed and no acid, How do you check it? Any other ideas? Dick

Not on an 83. It needs one there though. Dick -
rear brake issue
rhncue replied to Locomotive's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
By "grab and slip" do you mean that the brakes are pulsating when applied? If so, then one rotor is warped and you usually can see where as there will be a little color change or even a little rust on that rotor. Since the pistons were froze chance are that those pads were not making contact on the rotor so no pulsating was felt. If the slipping is not a pulsation but actually slipping, then it is because of new pads not seated yet on the glazed rotor. A little time and use will cure. Dick -
Most of your statements are correct except about the battery putting extra strain on the stator. Actually, the stator is always putting out as much power as it can at all time at any particular rpm. That which is not used is sent to ground and converted to heat by the regulator. Dick
-
I don't remember how I got mine out as it's been awhile. However, when I did I did it as I wanted to see if the timing was changing at different rpms. I put a timing light down there and when I started the engine about a quart of oil immediately hit me in the face. So much for that venture. Dick

Oil leak from stator wires?
rhncue replied to BJB's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You are correct in your assumption that the oil on the wire covers and adjacent area will hinder the sealer from making a good bond. However, I would still give it a shot. I would clean the wires and area as good as I could with a solvent like carb cleaner and then try to force some around the wires and such. It sure couldn't make the problem any worse. Dick -
I bought one 3 years ago. The 8 inch was 139.00 and the 12 inch was 159.00. I got the 12 inch also I had a 20% off coupon which dropped the price down around 130.00 plus tax. I still haven't got around to putting it together though. Dick

There are three cables. Did you change all three? Try by passing the solenoid. Maybe the contacts in it are burnt. Might very well be the battery is getting weak or was weak even when new. I put one of those Odyssey gel batteries in my bike and it made a big difference in starting, both when cold and hot. Dick

Here in Cincinnati there was very little rain but plenty of wind. They say that almost 700,000 are without electric and it could be a week before all is restored. There were 5 people killed from falling trees. A man and his wife were killed when a tree fell on their motorcycle while riding in a benefit for the Fairfield fire dept. Bikes are supposed to be a dangerous mode of transportation but who would have thought. Dick

To Part or Not to Part?
rhncue replied to 6pak's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I believe that I would put it back together and try to sell whole. There are certain parts that, if in good or like new condition, bring a fair amount of money but, it sounds like those parts are not operational on this bike (Radio, cb and such). The left side fairing sometimes goes high but not if it has been repaired or with broke tabs. Dick -
brake fluid reservoir troubles
rhncue replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Very common issue I'm afraid to say. They come up on e-bay often at a reasonable price. You can use the search feature on this forum and get some information on repairing your present one. It was just discussed not long ago. Someone said that they used JB Weld successfully repairing one. Dick- 10 replies

83 is different. 84 through 89 are the same. They made slight changes through out the years to improve so the newer the better. 90 on were completely different. Dick

Poor Gas mileage
rhncue replied to falconbm's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have an 83 and I get the same mileage as you. It doesn't seem to make any difference if I ride it hard or normal. I've had it for 10 years and have done about everything I can think of to get better mileage but to no avail. Dick -
'83 venture: 2 questions
rhncue replied to Mark Koontz's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Since the bike uses a fuel pump, you could make up a small tanker trailer and be able to ride cross country or maybe remove the saddle bags and put on some smaller saddle tanks. Dick- 5 replies

Backfire problem 1987 Venure XVZ13DT
rhncue replied to CptKirk's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The carbs do need cleaned but where's all the rust in the bowls coming from? Tank is the only metal part in the system. I would get as much sediment out of the tank as possible and of coarse, change the filter and I might even put another filter in line. Chances are the tank needs to be de-rusted and resealed but that is quite a bit of work on a Venture pulling the tank. Dick -
I believe that I have a set of them. I think they are red. I never used them. I got them from Rick at Buckeyeperformance one time. Dick
