That was the first accy I bought for my '04 Venture, I loved it so much that I "re-engineered" the bracket to fit the Roadstar. It made me sit up straighter which really helped my back, both pre and post surgery. The '99 I just bought already had one on it, just tweaked it to fit me, plus I really like that it will fold down flat. They are a little expensive, but well worth the price I believe. It should'nt be a big deal to make a sheepskin cover. Just sew up a pouch to slide over the backrest, maybe a little elastic around the opening to help secure it. I've had the same thing going on with the sweating, but I've never tried sheepskin. Does it really work that well? I'd always thought that it would make the heat worse, nothing more uncomfortable than swamp-butt.

I've learned a lot about the Ky. transfer process over the last couple of weeks. I sold my Roadstar to a buyer in Indiana, which just requred me to sign and notarize the title over to him, no problem. I went to the local DMV last week to transfer the Venture I bought, which was an in-state transfer, no problem there. I asked if the Roadstar had been transferred out of my name, PROBLEM! I was told that Ky. and Ind. DMV computers are not "linked", no shared info, which means that I have to turn in the plate before it will be released from my name here. It didn't cause him any problems titling it in Indiana, just causes me to continue to pay property taxes on it if I don't turn in the plate. The other option was for me to "junk" the title in Ky., which still would'nt affect him unless he sells the bike again, then the bad Ky. title would show up. I got the plate in the mail from the buyer today, so I'll get that taken care of tomorrow. If you transfer an out-of-state vehicle into Ky. you have to have it inspected by the Sheriffs office in your county of residence. They check the VIN on the title against the vehicle to confirm it's correct. I know it's all supposed to protect the buyer, but it's sure sometimes a lot of inconvenience to get it all taken care of. JerryT, in Ky. if you buy back a "totaled" vehicle you will receive a salvage title. The insurance company transfers it into their name at the time of settlement, and it's re-issued as a salvage vehicle, at least that's how it was handled back in '04.

I had the same question about the noise when I bought my first one in '06. I did a search of old posts and found this from Aug. '06 by Freebird. I took mine back for the dry spline issue, but the whine has been mentioned by every Venture owner I've talked to since then. It reminds me of the sound a gear-drive timing set makes in a V-8. I changed to Yamalube 20w50 and that quieted it down significantly. I did'nt have the clutch basket checked, but since it is a wet clutch, the oil probably helps the noise to an extent there too. Here is the original post in it's entirety, sorry, I just used quotation marks. Hope this will help. I've already addressed a couple of the issues at the bottom of the list this weekend with mine. "A list of known problems on the Second Gen Venture by Freebird" "Please add to this list if you think of something that I have missed. Chirp. There has been a lot of discussion on the "chirping" sound on the second gen Venture and Royal Stars. There is often some confusion about this sound. These bikes use straight cut gears which create a whine that is best described as the sound made by an old granny gear truck when you are letting it coast. That is a normal sound that is characteristic of the straight cut gears. The sound that is NOT normal is a high pitched chirping sound. This is a result of improper clutch basket clearances. Yamaha has replaced many clutch baskets under warranty and many people have reported that this has greatly reduced or eliminated this noise. Dry drive splines. Yamaha seems to be very stingy with the grease that they use on the rear drive spines on these bikes. There have been many reports of noise from the drive area. Yamaha has lubed some of these as a warranty issue but many of us have done the job at home. It requires a lift to remove the rear tire and then pulling the drive shaft to lube the front splines and also removing the rear drive from the wheel hub to grease the "fingers". Trunk Cracks. The 1999 model RSV had an issue with the trunk bottoms cracking. Yamaha came out with a support kit to address this problem and installed it under warranty. Audio Problems. Many people have had problems with the audio system due to back connections of the 5 din plugs inside the fairing. The fix is to split the fairing, unplug the connectors and apply a bit of dielectric grease to the pins. CB Antennas. The 1999 model RSV came with very poor CB Antennas. Many were replaced under warranty. The design was changed with the 2000 models. Many have replace the '99 antennas with aftermarket units. Backfiring. Upon deceleration, many have experienced a loud backfire. This actually sounds like a cannon going off. Some have corrected the problem by syncing the carbs but many of us have plugged the AIS system to stop this problem completely. There is a tech article here on plugging the AIS."

repainted my 2007 midnight

That paint looks GOOD!!! I really like the looks of the F/T mufflers too. BUT,,,,, my main thing is those air cleaners,,, what are they??? I've been trying to come up with something like that since I bought my first Venture back in '06. I've tried out about every scenario in my mind to mount dual Hyperchargers on one, but I could also live with a setup like yours. Did you have to re-jet the carbs after the air cleaners/mufflers too? -
"Figured out I was being CO poisoned by an old sportster that was running really rich directly in front of me." Sp!ke That is definitely something we all need to be aware of when riding in a large group. I went on a poker run back in July where there were several rough-running old bikes in a group. After the 2nd stop I made sure to get out ahead of them, didn't get sleepy but it sure made me nauseated smelling those fumes.

I'm not sure about the Goo-gone either. Before I delivered my Roadstar to it's new owner I had a couple of "politically incorrect" decals that I figured I'd better take off. I had put one over the original cheesy orange safety sticker that came on the Silverado windshield because I couldn't get it off. When I peeled the sticker off a little bit of the orange one came off leaving it looking like crap. I took some duct tape and covered the rest of the sticker, then rubbed it down pretty hard with my hand. Then I started pulling the duct tape back against itself, voila', the old sticker and the adhesive came right off. I had tried just about everything to remove it when I bought the bike and didn't find anything else that would work. You also might try warming it just a little with a hair dryer so the film isn't so brittle too. Good luck!

Wow, that's pretty wild. Yeah, the old dude needs to spend some quality time with "big bubba" for that. I saw on the local news last night where two guys on bikes were hit by a driver, both he and the owner of the car, who was the passenger, bailed out of the car and ran. As of this morning the police say she still hasn't given up the drivers name. They've tagged her with several charges, no insurance, expired reg., leaving the scene. There's been a rash of fatal bike accidents in Ky. in the last couple of weeks, both auto-related and single bike. A 28 yr old Army Cpt. was killed in Louisville Sat. night, he lost control of his sport bike in the rain and was hit by an SUV. He had just gotten home from Afghanistan on Friday. You just never know what's going on in other peoples minds when they're behind the wheel.

Looks good! I really like the look of the Reckless fairings. I had decided that I was going to add one to the Roadstar this winter, along with hard bags of some kind, but along came a Venture,,,,,,. Have a safe trip, enjoy the mountains, I'll be down there among them next week.

Yeah, a good bike rally really does bring folks together, especially one associated with folks like we have here. I haven't been fortunate enough, yet, to make a Venture rally, but I've attended several from another forum I belong to. There's always a couple of memorable moments that really stand out, and it's usually a one-liner in the wee morning hours that you remember the most. The food always stands out in my mind, there's always something new to try for the first time. The 'nishiations can get pretty weird, but hey, it's all in good fun,,,, right!?! You always leave with new friends and new memories that last a lifetime. Just remember, there's always somebody with a cell phone or camera,,,,,,,,,,,,.

They really need to put some sand or something in the paint they use for striping and crosswalks. I've had my Equinox slip on the wide crosswalks around our old county courthouse square when they are wet. It does get your attention when you feel the tires slip on a bike, seems like forever before they grab back. I hate getting caught in a light rain too, just enough to bring out the oil on the road and make it slick. Glad you're okay too.

I got the itch again for a big bike about 3 months ago. In hindsight I never should've sold my '04 Midnight last year, but that's water under the bridge. I got the hots for the Victory Vision 8-Ball, but just couldn't warm up to the fixed fairing. Then I checked out a Cross-Country, WOW, that is one nice ride. Weighs almost as much as the Venture, but is low and balanced, VERY sweet, just not too many comfort accy's out there yet. I talked to my dealer-dude about the new Ventures and he said that they were still teasing with fuel injection, but he said it probably wasn't going to happen til they make a wholesale change to them. He's heard rumors of some Victory-like changes, maybe a big v-twin, but he also said he's heard that they are looking at dropping it completely and revamping the 'liner into a big tourer. When I found this old '99 I decided that the several thousand $$'s I saved would be better held on to for possibly/probably triking it in a few years, plus, it's paid for. Besides, I already know what the Venture is, and even if it is "outdated" it's still got killer looks. Then again, I guess that's why there's so many 1st Gens around here too, huh? I like the looks of the Voyager/Vaquero too, but most everything I've read say they've got a lot of vibration in them, and I just got rid of that with the Roadstar. It all comes down to what you like and are comfortable with, after all, it's your $$'s you're spending.

Congrats on the retirement!! I took an early out from my employer 3 years ago this past April. It came at an opportune time in my working life and I was able to make it work. There are some "adjustments" to make, but I've never looked back. I'm kinda looking around for something part-time now, but I'm not looking too hard. Kinda getting a little more independent in my later years, besides, I like to be able to ride when I want now!

It must be something about gas pumps, because that's the only time I seem to "forget" to put the kickstand down. I did it a couple of times with the first Venture, but got into the habit of putting the Roadstar on the kickstand since the cap was on the side of the tank. I'd like to see Yamaha/Star do something similar to HD with the kickstands, it sure would save a lot of "pride"! These Ventures sure are hard to catch sometimes.

Congrats to you both!! It was 35 for me and Mrs. Wrench back in April. Wow, how time does fly when your having fun!!

I had an '03 Roadstar Silverado for a little over a year, and I absolutley loved that old bike. It is a completely different ride from a Venture, not nearly as heavy, with a much lower center of gravity. Those were the reasons I bought it when I had to give up my '04 Venture because of back surgery. I listed mine on Craigslist a couple of weeks ago and sold it the 3rd day, $4500 w/18k miles. He appears to be just a little high on the price, $6500 would be a little more in line I think. It does have several $$'s in accy's, and most people say that you can't count them into a sale price. But it's been my experience that those are $$'s that YOU won't be spending if you like the bike's style. That dual exhaust system is about $700 by itself. The only thing to check is if the transmission recall has been done, I think it went up thru the '07's. It's a good looking ride too, good luck with your decision.

When I had the '04 for sale last year it was sitting on the dealers floor and someone left the key on accy. and ran it down. They jumped it for me and I brought it home, put it on the charger, but the battery was toast. It was the original battery and I had never had any problems til then. Yes Squidley, the charging systems are pretty weak. I swapped out the spot light halogen bulbs on the Roadstar from 35watt to 55watt because I couldn't find 35's anywhere locally. I put a voltmeter on it and watched the charging system at work and it could just barely keep up with the 55's on. I ordered the 35's and all was well after that. I have asked this question on another site, with no clear answer, and I'm just curious. Why does the Venture use sealed beam spots and the Roadstar use halogens? The housings are even different so you can't change from one type to the other. The '99 has 30watt sealed beams in them. Just another "inquiring mind" thing.

Upon further inspection I found that I had 2 ignition keys and only 1 key for the rest of the locks. I stopped by the locksmith and she told me that she could re-key the ignition to match the locks, which would be a better solution than using a double-cut key. For now I'm just going to have an extra lock key cut, then get the ignition done this winter. Thanks for all the input.

Is anyone here using the IMC helmetless headsets? I really like wearing a half helmet the majority of the time, and this headset looks like what I've been wanting. I had the JM/Yamaha sets with the '04 Venture, but sold them a little over a month ago before I knew I was going to get another Venture. In fact, the guy I sold them to is how I found out about the '99. I've been scouring the 'net tonite looking at them on several sites and most reviews lean towards using a mic mute, which the previous owner had installed. I'd be willing to give up a little of the audio quality to have the helmet flexibility. The wife and I have been talking, and she kinda wants to go back with what she had since she only wears an open-face. Any experience/info, good or bad, is appreciated. Also, does anyone have a '99-'00 style cb antenna? The chrome threaded "cup" that unscrews and lets them fold over was seized up on both. I got the radio antenna freed up, but the little hinge connector inside the cb twisted and broke. I'll probably never use the cb, but I would like to be able to fold both antennas down to cover it up.

Ummm, Dragonslayer, I don't use it on ABS, and I've never had a problem using it (other than using RED by mistake one time, oops!). Another choice: Clear or black RTV works just as well..a little dab on the threads and will not destroy the plastic..and th ebolt will nto come loose..

Harleys have always had the reputation of losing parts, mainly because of the mass amount of vibration. I had both of the front brake caliper bolts fall out on my Suzuki Volusia, the trunk hinge screws were a problem with my '04 Venture, and there was always something coming loose on the Roadstar, man, it vibrated really bad. I've been going over the '99 Venture I just bought, checking the usual suspects and found the driving light bar was loose. I usually go over my bikes during the winter and check as many of the bolts/fasteners as I can. Just a dab of blue Loc-tite will go a long way to keep everything in place and give you some peace of mind. And don't forget torque specs on the important stuff too!!
-
I "may" have a set available. The '99 I just bought has a set of Diamond R's on it and I may wind up swapping them back to stock just to get it back down that 3/4". I've got to do a little more twisties riding before I decide for sure. I'm going to the Smokies for a few days of riding next week, so I'll know for sure when I get back from there.

Oh Kyle, just look around, there's PLENTY of boobs around here!! -
I'll probably just deal with the 2 keys for now, then take the ign. switch out this winter and go that route. Thanks again for all the assistance, I appreciate it.

Yeah, that's what I thought too. The bank said they would handle it, and I haven't heard anything else from them. Maybe they had to change the subscription address to the local jail.
