  1. I started my "addiction" with a '70 CL-100. Absolutely rode the livin' daylights out of that bike. I think my Dad gave $295 for it new for my 12th birthday. Wow, THAT'S been a looong time ago,,,,,,,,,,.
  2. I had a set of the Bub's slip-ons on my other Venture, loved the sound with the packing removed, but HATED the peeling tips. I bought a set of Road King take-offs and used an 1-7/8" hole saw to gut the baffle plugs. They sounded better the more I rode as the packing burned out more, they were somewhere in sound between stock and the Bub's. If you use any type/brand of Harley-mount muffler you'll need to fab some brackets like those in the second link above. I'm looking at doing another H/D set this winter, along with some sort of air cleaner mod, probably the round K&N's.
  3. Yeah, I hate to see you go too, I was hoping to see some updates along the way on the new Vic, that is a sweet looking ride. I did the same thing when I sold my first Venture last year and got the old Roadie, but here I am, back again. There's no way to beat the amount of info, or the folks here.
  4. I had an '02 Suzuki Volusia that "clicked" when I rolled it backward, so I cleaned what little grease there was off the splines and housing and re-packed it with hi-pressure wheel bearing grease, also did the same to the front u-joint splines. I had the same thing happen on the Venture, so when I took it in to the dealer for the repair, (covered under the 5 year warranty), I asked him what they used, he said hi-pressure wheel bearing grease, and very liberally. I keep a small tub in the garage anyway, so now I just clean, check, and repack the splines when it's apart, usually for tires. Apparently the Japanese are very stingy with grease when they put them together as the Suzuki only had a light film smeared around the splines.
  5. Looks good!! Just my .02, but I also think orange would look better than black. How does that c/f tape hold up to the elements? Did you use any heat to get it to wrap around the edges? I think I read somewhere once that if you used a hairdryer you could kinda "mold" it and work it around edges and odd shapes without crinkling it.
  6. I guess I need to check my backup fuse circuit too. Every time I push the reverse button on the left side the backup alarm sounds but nothing else happens. I do use the two trip odometers fairly regularly though, one for gas stops and the other for total miles in a day. Just one of my many "quirks" I guess. djh3, c'mom, ya'll gotta give the cassette thing a rest, at least there were still a few around when my '99 came out.
  7. My '04 did that a couple of times, but only when the temp was cold and the bike had sat for a few days. I guess if there is enough of a voltage drop when it's cold then they reset, mine even lost the radio presets once.
  8. My oldest son and his wife live in Clermont, Fla. on a small lake. He called me a while back and told me about seeing one swoop down and pick up a snake from the lake. He said he still sees them once in a while around Lake Louisa. There was a pair that spent a couple of months hanging around near my family farm last year about 30 miles west of me. As far as anybody can remember there has never been any in this part of Ky. One of the neighbors said he'd heard that the state released a pair of them at Ft. Knox and that it was probably them. It's a cool sight to see regardless of where you see them.
  9. I second DragonRider's motion, I might actually be able to make that one. That's some GOOD ridin'!!
  10. Now THAT'S funny!! Thanks for giving me a lift this morning.
  11. Yes, it looks like they weren't chromed like mine were. Those tips look exactly like mine did, and they should have 2 stainless steel pop rivets holding each of them in. Looking at them from the rear, the rivets on the right side pipes should be at 6:00 and 9:00, and on the left side at 6:00 and 3:00. The tips were a really snug fit into the muffler bodies too, as they also held the baffles in place, I remember having to spray some WD-40 in between the tips and muffler bodies to get them out. When you get the tips off then you can slip the baffles out. If they haven't been removed for a while then the packing material around the baffles is probably long gone, mine sounded much better without it anyway.
  12. I've been doing some searching, but no luck yet, for a set of master cylinder covers. The only left-side I can find is in a set of Kuryakyn's for a VTX-1800. I have a set of aftermarket lids on both, but am looking for covers to hide the peeling/dull clearcoat on the reservoirs. I know I may have to do some "tweaking" because of the audio control mount. Here is what I've found so far.
  13. That is a good looking old bike. I had a set of Bub slip-on mufflers on my '04 Midnite Venture, and had the tip measurements but I can't find them now. I loved the sound and the looks, but the chrome blistered and peeled off the billet tips. They replaced the first set under warranty, and repeatedly assured me that they had stopped chroming the billet. I put the new set on and they peeled faster than the first set did. I contacted them the second time and they basically told me to p!&$ off, they weren't going to honor their warranty. Not long after my issues with them they started anodizing the tips black. If you can get all the chrome peeled off you can buff/polish out the tips, or have them anodized or powder coated. Am I right in guessing that it sounds pretty good with the 4-into-4 setup?
  14. Sooooo, are all these Canadian pennies I've saved over the years gonna be worth anything now????? I've always kinda banked on them being "retirement" money for me!! Maybe I could take them out to Fort Knox and trade them for a gold bar?
  15. That's a good lookin' ride. It's amazing what a little elbow grease and TLC will do, huh! The guy I bought my '99 from said it had been kept in a garage/shed and not been started for about 3 years. He said it looked pretty sad when he brought it home, mouse beds in the fairing and under the tank, bird droppings, dirt and all, and it cleaned up fine. I always thought the white-letter Dunlops looked cool too. Congrats!!

  17. He don't look too bad for an old, beat-up biker, does he?!? Glad to see you're on the mend 'ol buddy!!! I don't care what anybody says, them hospital gowns are high fashion!!! (maybe just a tad breezy!)
  18. I built a 24' x 24' pole-barn style garage a couple of years ago. I had it insulated as that is now where the bike resides during the winter, well, pretty much all the time now, and where I tinker with some woodworking stuff too. The guy that did my concrete finished it to almost a "gloss" finish. He advised me, for the uses I told him, was to clean it with a pressure washer and concrete floor cleaner, then use a clear waterproofing sealer. I think I finally stopped at 6 coats of sealer, allowing each to dry between coats. It does at times get a little slick if I get sawdust on it. The epoxy holds up well also, I had experience using that on a "clean-room" in the shop where I worked. We moved a lot of industrial pumps and equipment across it, as well as parking forklifts and small cranes on it regularly with no problems. I think if it were me I'd stay away from concrete paint, as most all of my experience with it is that it just isn't nearly as durable as epoxy. It kinda depends on what your going for but the epoxy should get you both looks and durability. Let us know what you decide and take some pics for us.
  19. Hey Creole, I'll try to meet up and ride a little with you, I live about an hour north of Mammoth Cave. If you come into Ky from the southwest you can pick up Hwy 68/80 at Aurora, which is on the west side of Ky. Lake. You could also come in thru Wickliffe, Ky., pick up Hwy 60 and stop in Owensboro for some BBQ at Moonlite. Just let me know your plans and I'll see if I can make it, looking forward to meeting you.
  20. Glad to see this too. Stay on the mend!!
  21. Got the same one too, it's a good little trailer for the money. It pulls very easy and you don't have the price of another bike in it. You may want to check first to see if they have one in stock. They told me when I bought mine they were pretty hot sellers and they had a hard time keeping them stocked, I had to go to the Clarksville, Ind. HF store to get mine. Definitely use the 20% coupon too, I just checked my e-mails and had a 25% that expired last month, sorry.
  22. Glad to hear he's okay too. Tell him to take it easy, the pain meds don't last forever!!
  23. I really expected them to at least update the audio system this year, something a little more than just an I-pod. Surely there can't be many more cassette decks left in Japan!!
  24. I found a pic of a '98 650 Eliminator. Going by what's left of yours this is my guess,,,
  25. Congrats!! Our 1st, and only, will be 9 Nov. 30th. They sure do have a way of makin' you feel old!!
