  1. Yeah, they do sound good when you get the right set of mufflers on them, don't they!
  2. That is COOL!!! I did a search and found it's in Norway. It's the Atlanterhavsveien Road, it connects mainland Romsdal to the island of Averoya, the search also said it's the best drive in Norway. I don't have a problem with bridges on the bike, but a guy I used to ride with does. He went to Florida a few years ago to visit his sister in Key West. He had her meet him at Homestead and ride his bike to her house in the Keys, then back to Homestead when he left. He didn't have a problem with 4 wheels, just 2. Here's a link to the Norway road,,, www.theatlanticroad.com
  3. I saw probably the most pitiful sight today that I think I've ever seen. I was on I-64 on the east side of Louisville and saw a small SUV that had hit a deer, and it looked like it was totaled. I looked over in a soybean field and saw it, a pretty nice buck. He'd somehow gotten over the fence next to the road and was belly-crawling probably 50 feet or so out in the field, and it appeared that all 4 legs were broken. There was a couple of guys headed toward him as we passed. We came back by in a couple of hours and they had field dressed him, so at least he did'nt go to waste like I've been seeing a lot road kills do lately.
  4. Thanks for the clips SilvrT, they DO sound good. They sound a little deeper than my Bub's did, and they've got that "cackle" when you let off too. I'm still kinda undecided about what I'm going to put on this one, might go with another set of modified H/D's like before. Gonna go do some swap-meeting in a couple of weeks to see what I can find.
  5. Yeah tx2, some fringe is about all that's left to add!! My first Venture was an '04 Middie, and it had around $3k worth of accy's on it when I bought it. I've heard some folks say that you can't add the price of the accy's when you're looking at a bike, but I disagree. If YOU like the styling direction the p.o. went then that's $$'s that YOU are saving. From going thru another Venture purchase a few months ago myself, it seems like when these 2nd gens get around 10 yrs old they level out in price at around $6k-$8k, again, depending on miles and accy's. It all comes down to what you like, afterall, it's your $$'s you're spending. I'm really interested in what kind of "kit" he used to make the trunk detachable, I've always thought "bagger" would be a good look on the Venture. I haven't heard Khromewerks mufflers in person, but I had a set of Bub's with no packing on my '04 and they weren't obnoxiously loud. Welcome to the site Buck, keep us informed.
  6. All "smoke" aside, you might also try American Moto Tire. My son has ordered from them a couple of times, and aside from a p.o.s. Dunlop 404 front that he only got 5k out of, he's had good experiences with them. The last tires I ordered was a set of Michelin Commanders from MC Pro, but that was 4 years ago and it looks like tires have gone up since then.
  7. I haven't been out yet, maybe this coming weekend I can drag myself out. My son killed a pretty nice 8" spike yesterday morning on our farm, boned out about 75#'s of meat. One of the spikes was broken off, and he said it's head and neck was scratched up from fighting. There were 2 other 8 pointers killed there opening weekend, dressed about 140#'s each. The deer have taken over since we don't run any cattle on it now, my son said he found 5 active scrapes over the weekend. I've been running up I-65 to Louisville for the last week, and there are deer scattered everywhere along there. I guess the State Hwy dept. stopped picking them up, a couple have been laying in the emergency lanes well over a week.
  8. Yeah, the guy that put me onto my Venture said he rode a Cross Country and he said almost exactly what you did. He said his wife was less comfortable on it than she was on his old Roadstar. He was also the one that told me that they loosen up, he knew a guy that bought a new Vision and traded it on a Gold Wing after about a year.
  9. I started seeing one around here back in the summer. The owner is about the size of the late Michael Clarke Duncan, and he fits the Rune pretty well. It should be fast with that quick-revving 1800 on it, kinda like the Valkyries were with the 1500's. I just never could warm up to the styling either, but it's just whatever YOU like.
  10. Overall, did it feel as good comfort-wise it as it looks? The seat height is what I really like about the Vics, but most every article I've read say the tranny is clunky, and I've heard that things tend to "loosen up" from the vibration after a few miles. I got REALLY hot for one back in the summer, first the Vision 8-Ball, but I really did'nt think I'd like the fixed fairing, then the dealer got in a Cross Country,,,, WOW. I just wasn't at a place at the time where I was ready to let go of that many $$'s, so that's how I wound up with another used Venture. But I still get that warm fuzzy feelin' when I see a Vic,,,,,,,,.
  11. See Larry, I've got a mind like a steel trap!! Now,,,,, if I could just remember where I left my keys,,,,,,,,,,. One thing that IS for sure, I'll never forget all the ideas and help I got from you and Popcycle on the "original" VOL. Thanks for the good memories.
  12. That's a good looking ride Larry, and glad to see you're healing up too. Hmmm, just thinking/remembering, didn't the 'ol Volusia have some red paint on it too?? Man, that's a blast from the past,,,,.
  13. I'm not going to bash anyone for their choice of rides, but I agree with you, it doesn't make sense to me either. I DO like the ease and flexibility of removing the tour pack on the Ultra's. Looking thru the m/c mags I get each month it seems that for the last 3 or 4 years the "bagger" look has really been growing. I'm guessing it's got a lot to do with the economy still being what it is, and that it's a lot less $$'s to have that look than it is to buy a $50k+ "custom" ride. I was all set to go that route with the Roadstar I had, just add a fairing and hard bags. I've sat and looked at both Ventures I've had and thought that they would look pretty cool if the trunk wasn't there,,,, at times,,,, but then again that's what I bought another one for, the dry storage. If only there was somewhere else to stash the electronics that are under the trunk,,,, hmmm.
  14. My oldest son, who lives in Florida, sent me that article when it happened. Being the good Kentucky Redneck that he is, and tries very hard to disguise, he said, "hey dad, you just ain't gonna believe this". As the old saying goes, "you just can't make this s#!t up!!":confused24:
  15. I've been a Steelers fan for a lot of years and hope they can keep it all together. I was in and out yesterday, checking the score pretty often, and that was not a beat down, just a win. Hopefully they can get healthy soon, and hoping Troy P. can come back for just a little more. There's several pretty good teams this year though, and a few surprises.
  16. Congrats on the retirement Dennis, hope you enjoy it as much as I have. I was offered an "early-out" by the company I worked for 3 1/2 yrs ago, I had 28 yrs. in, and it was a big deal. Our retirement was based on a points system, age & yrs of service to equal 85 points for full benefits. The pension $$'s were based on the highest 3 consec. yrs pay out of the last 10 yrs. I had been in the maintenance shops for 10 years, with the highest 3 consec. being my FIRST 3 since we were working 5 10hr days and going to school another 20-25 hrs a week at full pay. My 3 best were going to drop off as my "target" date was May 2012. After all the "figuring" I took about an 8-10% cut in my pension, and my health ins. cost me about $50.00 more per month. I was fortunate in that we could keep all our regular benefits upon retirement, health ins. until eligible for Medicare. When they "sprung" the news on us in Feb. '09 we had 15 days to decide if we wanted to participate, then another 30 days after signing up to back out. It was probably the single biggest decision I've ever made, especially under those circumstances, but I've never looked back. I just started a pretty decent part-timer with a local based business as a tanning bed "lamp changer". There are some good little "niche" jobs out there, but you have to dig around to find them. Good luck!! Maybe we can get together sometime, we're not all that far apart.
  17. Before I built my garage mine would probably already be in the basement, and once it got there it stayed til usually late Feb. It was really hard to get a Venture thru a 36" door too!! Now if we get a decent day I'm ready. Supposed to be in the mid-60's here this weekend, and I'm torn between riding and deer hunting for the first time in about 10 years, may try to work in a little of both.
  18. It's amazing how easily we can get caught up in our own vanity, huh. Glad he wasn't hurt any worse than it sounds cause he took a heckuva ride. I'm also guessing the 'vette driver pinched a BIG chunk out of the seat too. But at least it was an OLD, WORN OUT 'vette, an '01 with 111,000 miles. Killboys f-i-l, who runs the tailofthedragon website, is constantly on the cops "targeting" 129, but in reality accidents like these are what helps them in justifying it. Like the old saying goes, "it's all fun and games 'til somebody gets hurt". I freely admit that I've "over-ridden" it, and realized it every time. The thing that scares/concerns me more than cages are the crotch-rocketeers that seem to want to play mirror tag with you. 5 or 6 years ago I actually brushed elbows with one coming up out of a curve, and I ain't lying, it scared the crap outta me!
  19. Creole, looks like you guys may have to just sit it out tomorrow. Sounds like it's gonna be pretty wet, and really cooler most all day, but Saturday is supposed to be dry and sunny with a high around 57. Let me know your plans for Saturday and I'll see if I can get down that way to meet you, at least for a little while. If you're looking for something different to do there's a bike shop just on the south side of Mammoth Cave Park, it's called Chrome Crazy. He mostly caters to the 'wing crowd but he's got a lot of Kuryakyn stuff for other bikes too. He and his wife are really good people, and enjoy having company, just be sure to sign the book if you go. Sorry I hadn't gotten back with you, I started a new job yesterday and my butt was kicked last night!
  20. The previous owner of mine had a Clearview on it when I went to look at it. That was the first thing he told me about, and the first thing he kept for his other Venture. Gotta get me one of them before next year. Just one question, does the shorter height bother a passenger any more than stock? My wife is 5'-7" and the stock height never bothered her before.
  21. Man, does that bring back memories. There were 4 of us that came up thru grade school together, and when we got our license in '74 we all got bikes. Two of us got enduros, me a 175 Kaw, another a 250 Kaw, the other 2 guys got a 750 triple Kaw and a Z-1 900. We all split up our riding among each others bikes, then we would head to town on Saturday night to do the McD's thing and cruise the local hangouts. We rode 2-up on the street bikes, but that was before 2 guys on a bike wasn't "politically correct". I absolutely loved the smell of the old 2 strokers though, and they seemed at the time to be just monstrous in size. One of my cousins still has an old Kaw 500 triple that hasn't been ridden in at least 20 years, and it still could be a fixer. I've been working him trying to buy it from him, but no luck so far. Thanks for the good old memories.
  22. There's just something that does draw people to a hack rig. There's been an old-looking Ural that's been passing my house the last month or so, kinda sounds like a cross between a Cessna and a 5hp Briggs without a muffler. It looks like he's just got a straight piece of pipe for the exhaust, and I can hear him when he turns off the main highway almost 2 miles away. I think he works on post at Ft. Knox as he's most always wearing the required reflective gear. I've been seeing all different kinds of bikes since the BRAC thing at Knox ramped up, several dual-sport bikes, and even a few enduros being ridden by ladies. It's like reliving the past when you find an old-school shop nowadays, they've almost gone the way of the dinosaurs. There's one here close to me, in an old block and brick garage building that was a car dealer in the 50's, he mainly specializes in H/D's, but it's the same way, just something about that "atmosphere".
  23. I'm not gonna beat up on you, looks like everybody else has done a pretty decent job of that. The only thing I've got is that we never need to take for granted that our wives will be able to ride whenever we are. It's been almost 5 years since mine has ridden with me, and I MISS her on the back. Hopefully she's heading back towards the bike though, she's getting her pain pump implant next week, and the Doc is very optimistic that he'll get her back on the bike next year. Good luck in that doghouse though!!
  24. That's a good looking trike, congrats! I went thru the same "emotional detachment" with my '04 last year, but I got it all back when I got the '99. I saw a silver Venture trike here in town today, and man, that thing is HUGE, but I've always kinda thought that the 'wings make a better looking trike. Good luck!
  25. Sounds like an issue I had a few years ago with a now-defunct local Southern Cruisers chapter. I have a friend that is involved pretty heavily with them and she suggested that I look into them, so I called the chapter president and asked for some info. The first question he asked, before allowing me any info, was what brand of bike I rode. At the time I had a Suzuki, to which he replied, not so subtlely, "ain't no way in h#!l a piece of Jap trash is gonna ride with us, we only allow AMERICAN IRON"!! So I thanked him, called my friend, she inquired about it to the national organization, and in a short while they had their charter pulled. A little while after that he and his "Harley boys" as he called them, started a local chapter of the Outlaws. Funny thing was that my bro-in-law was allowed to join them, and he rode a Goldwing. They made an "exception" because he was a bike mechanic and kept their "AMERICAN IRON" running. I've had a couple of guys I know that are members of the Black Pistons, which is the metric version of the Outlaws, ask me to join. I have no desire whatsoever to be a member of a "club", especially one that acts as "childish" as these do.
