  1. Didn't feel as if the clutch slips under load.
  2. Before at 4100 I would be just over 80 mph
  3. Oil changed about 2000 miles ago used Rotella 15/40. I didn't notice any lag in acceleration like the clutch was slipping.
  4. Does anyone here have personal experience with this unit. I'm really interested in the audio quality and if the 40 watts per channel is RMS continuous or a peak output.
  5. Riding at 75 mph my tach usually reads about 3800 rpm. Now at the same speed it shows 4100 rpms. First I guess I should ask what it should read at 75? And am I looking at clutch issue?
  6. How does the flow rate compare to the stock pump? Might get one to carry as a backup on trips.. There is also one with 35 LPH flow.
  7. So I need the starter clutch and the 72 tooth gear?
  8. Since I didn't have the usual noise with a bad starter clutch I thought maybe I would be spared this task.
  9. I am back to square one. I went to start the bike today and got nothing but the sound of a spinning starter with no engine rotation. Any other thoughts on what might be happening or what else I need to look at?
  10. A friend and I rode a similar road in the Philippines, but narrower. We to ride until we came to a small village. Once we got on the there wasn't enough room to turn around. BTW he was on an 83 Venture and I on an 84.
  11. I'm running 404's and were a step up from the Metzlers I had. BTW Elite 2 and 404 have the same tread pattern. Running parts bike I have has Elite 2.

    Biker hit

I not a lawyer or anything but this looks like an assault to me or maybe attempted murder. http://lanesplitter.jalopnik.com/driver-who-swerved-to-hit-a-motorcycle-i-dont-care-1737184460?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+jalopnik%2Ffull+%28Jalopnik%29&ref=yfp
  13. I took the gears back off to spin the 72 tooth gear, turned freely in only one direction ,clockwise. This afternoon I hit the starter with the cover still off and everything worked as advertised. Before I put this thing back together I need to know what went wrong or is there something else I need to do before reassembly. I ask this also because the gaskets looked fairly new and maybe the PO had an issue or left something out.
  14. I pulled the cover to take a look. Gears fell out when I took off the cover. I put them back on in the configuration you see. Is there anything other than the cover holding the gears in place?
  15. BTW the starter will spin with the bike in gear with the clutch lever out.
  16. The starter worked fine for several days while I was trying to synch the carbs. It stalled while I was making an adjustment it stalled so I called it a day. The next day is when I tried to start it is when it just spun.
  17. The bike is 89 VR that was a complete running project (cosmetics). I would start it a couple of times a week and ride it a few blocks, then the starter died. I got a 4 brush form ebay and basically forgot about it and it sat since February. This past week I finally changed the starter and after having to break the gas cap to get good gas in it, I wanted to synch the carbs and they were really off. After a few days of that I went out today to try again and the starter would spin but no engine rotation. It never made noise like a starter clutch failure or sounded strange. So where do I start?
  18. Finally had to go medieval on it. A hammer was involved, but any way I need a new cap. Even after I got it off the locking tabs still wouldn't move. BTW the 2 screws were still in place and secure
  19. Thought some would find this amazing. At about 2:45 into the video the sound you hear is just the starter for the engine
  20. I have tried your suggestions. The key does turn and have sprayed in numerous lubes with no luck. The cap will turn to the right about a quarter turn but I can't get it to come off.
  21. I have an 89 that was I guess a running project. It ran fine but cosmetically was in poor shape. I got an 86 in better shape but started the 89 a couple time a week. The starter died back in March. Well long story short I just got around to replacing the starter. The bike runs pretty good fotr sitting so long, but now I can't get the gas cap off. Any ideas on what to do? Thanks
  22. Needs a sticky or moved to tech section.

  24. I have an 86 and 89. I took a look at the linkages on both and they are physically different. Take a look a parts illustration of the 2 and they are different. I thought my 86 sits high but it has the correct linkage, any thoughts. 83-87 http://www.yamahapartshouse.com/oemparts/a/yam/50042b00f8700209bc78972b/swing-arm 88-93 http://www.yamahapartshouse.com/oemparts/a/yam/5107f839f870022108d6577b/swing-arm
  25. I also have a spare set for an 83 and is done the same way.
