If I've got nothing going on that weekend, I may have to tag along with you, Jay.

Compatible DVD decoder?
Cerviperus replied to Skid's topic in Computer help and tips for using this site.
Two questions. They may seem a little out there, but when you work with people like the ones I work with on a daily basis, no question is to out there. 1) Is the drive in your PC definitely DVD compatible? I'm going to assume yes on this one, and give you the benefit of the doubt. 2) You're not trying to play Blu-Ray or HD-DVD in a standard drive are you?- 10 replies

Compatible DVD decoder?

Personally, I would hate to see anyone spend $$$ on software to do something so basic. There are so many quality open source or freeware software packages to do just about anything you could imagine. For someone adventurous enough (I have yet to take that step), you could have a completely functioning computer do everything you need, operating system and all, only paying for the hardware. Legally. You just need to know where to look and have a little patience to look up help online instead of relying on 24-hour tech support or a printed manual.- 10 replies

Compatible DVD decoder?

It probably has something to do with the codecs that WMP has installed. You might try downloading a K-Lite Codec Pack. That might solve your problem without having to completely change your media player. However, I highly recommend anyone who plays any type of media to give VLC a try, as Keith mentioned. I have yet to find a media format that it doesn't like.- 10 replies

Jay... Any idea what day you're headed up there? I think me and a few other people are going to make a trip up there as well. Right now, we're not sure yet if we're going on that Saturday or Sunday.

I'm going to be shopping around for a new set of tires for my car sooner than I'd hoped, so this information is great to have. Thanks for posting this information!

Welcome to the state of Chicago. "Illinois" is just a fancy name for the cornfields that surround Chicago.

I don't know if there is any truth to it or not, since I've never worked at one, but I've always heard that since Sam Walton passed away the treatment of employees took a nosedive. But again, as one on a limited budget myself, I shop there. Then again, I also have to take a loan to buy a new vehicle, and I know how many people on these forums feel about that.

What would you do different in cycle wreck?
Cerviperus replied to dharnie's topic in Lessons Learned
I've had two different types of mishaps, once that could have been avoided, and one that (given the situation) couldn't. The first type was on my little 200cc dual sport. I'd been out running through the woods & playing in the mud, then headed for home. Typically on that thing I take corners with a foot on the ground, wide open throttle, like I'm in motocross or something. Well, I decided to do that on my way home, not even thinking about my mud-caked rear tire. The bike went out from under me like it was on a sheet of glass. Two lessons learned: 1) don't be stupid when any element leads to lowered traction, 2) don't be stupid period. The second type was laying my new bike on it's side when coming to a stop. We were on a trip with 3 other couples, and had been in the twisties all day. We came to a sort of T intersection, the kind we'd been simply rolling through all day because traffic was never present - just like in this case. However, we were in staggered formation with me in the second spot, towards the right side of the road. I didn't expect the leader to stop (neither did anyone else when we got to talking about it), so I wasn't fully prepared. I hit the brakes, and because we were already in the motions of turning right, weight was naturally leaning that way. I had no choice but to put my right foot down. However, at this point in the road, there was no shoulder, only a 3-5 inch drop to gravel below. Down we went. I might have been able to stop it had I been 7' tall, but other than that I think anyone would have gone down. Lessons learned: 1) always be prepared to stop, 2) always try and check your footing BEFORE stopping. I know those aren't always easy to do together, but hey, no one said these lessons had to be easy! -
One more on its way.

How This Big Old Top-heavy Bike May Have SAVED My LIFE
Cerviperus replied to Aimhigh's topic in Watering Hole
Good luck with the surgery, and with a speedy recovery. It's always a blessing to find out these types of things early as opposed later. Seems like that sand might have been in the right place at the right time. -
Great Deal If You Can Afford The Shipping...
Cerviperus replied to bongobobny's topic in Watering Hole
Must be a very recent change to the system, or like you said, the way he listed it. The camper I just bought (ended on the 9th) had the following shipping: "Buyer responsible for vehicle pick-up or shipping." It's been too long since I've listed anything myself, so it's hard telling. Surprising eBay hasn't thrown a fit over the super inflated shipping prices either, with some of the things they complain about. -
Great Deal If You Can Afford The Shipping...
Cerviperus replied to bongobobny's topic in Watering Hole
I had to go back and look again before I noticed that. I guess he didn't realize he could simply specify shipping not available. -
And so it begins... I'm not Black Owl. That's Cerberus you're thinking of. And although I posted those, I have to admit I laughed harder at most of the ones posted here than the ones from that site.

Yep, this one is my first. As far as forums, there are two that I frequent, but more to see what's going on than to actually socialize. For that I come here. That's not to say BMW riders aren't a social bunch, I can't hardly get away from any I meet, they just don't seem to do it on the forums. BMW Sport Touring BMW Luxury Touring My name is Cerviperus on both of those as well, though I don't post too often.

Car or bike, I try not to run more than 7mph over the speed limit. I will stay with the flow of traffic through larger cities though, as like everyone else has said, it seems safer to stay with the flow than to be the slow one. However, that way of thinking is the reason everyone speeds in those areas to begin with. Here in town, the PD has been given the go-ahead to setup some speed traps in known areas. An e-mail went around recently here at work (not 100% sure on it's validity) that someone had been pulled over at one such area. She knew the cop so he let her off with a warning, but told her to pass the word that they'd be ticketing for anything over 7mph over the posted limit. So I guess the limit I've set for myself is just about right.
