Four brush starter upgrade
gwashorn replied to uncledj's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I want to go ahead and do the 4 pole upgrade. So for most folks, if you find one used on say Ebay you feel OK about that or would a new one make you feel better? I know my mechanic can get one but for probably closer to $200. So $100 plus difference on what you are seeing on Ebay etc and a new one. value difference? -

Four brush starter upgrade
gwashorn replied to uncledj's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I am really interested in this because I contacted the shop that does my VR work and asked him about his price. He said about $425 for an OEM and $250 for third party for the 4 brush model. I have looked at these posted up here from EBAY and have to wonder what I am really getting. I want to get mine replace while out on vacation before the summer starts. I too hate getting gas and then it won't start till it cools. My 4th VR and they all did the same thing. -
Best of luck on knee. Been there done that. After One blow up and three clean outs from the menicus flaking and tearing off, I have none left. No cartilage left either, just bone on bone. But it is worth it as the little flaps catch and bind in the joint it HURTS! but good part is it will feel better and easy recovery. Will be sore but easy recovery. Hang in there. Hard getting old but better than not...

Clearing out 1st gen parts
gwashorn replied to Squidley's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Talk about now checking the site. I do check and I missed this one from you Squidley. Yes, would love to get up your way. Rode some this weekend but twisted a nerve out of whack on the shoulder the other day that WAS healing up well since surgery. Found holding the throttle more than 15 minutes sucked big time. Will get the kink worked out and find a time to come up that way. I suspect my head set plug is just corroded and does not make good contact is all. Been looking some for a new one but not really found one yet. Thanks and will pay more attention to the titles and check things. -
Bagger Shield Adjustable Height Windshield, Yamaha Royal Star 1300
gwashorn replied to Santa Hal's topic in Watering Hole
I am looking for a new shield for my '89 VR. They don't offer one though. I like the idea however. -
I am assuming you are doing the Three Twisted Sisters? Buddy and I are planning on taking that ride a bit later this year. We are south of where you are in Alvin, south of Houston. Be safe, small roads, loose gravel and lots of twists.

Got my bell the other day and they are beautiful. I had my WIFE open the package for HER bell..... She loved it.

When we picked up my "89VR in Arkansas last year the owners had a bell on it. they made a point of saying WE GIVE THIS BELL to you. So I ordered my bell here and I told my wife the other day I have a Bell that I AM GIVING HER, since she rides with me. So I covered myself so I can put my bell on. I like this rule. Can't wait to see mine then.

Well, talked to Kuryakyn and they said yes, they have had a few do that, LED lights and nothing else works. They said to go back to my supplier, Power Sport Superstore for replacement. Called them and got it OKed for return so waiting on RMA label, will send controller back and get a new one. then I can try again to put them on. Less, I have become fond of the white color schemes. Had two of the gold ones on the 83 and 84, then the next one was the burgandy and now the white. I think the Blue will look nice on the white so long as I don't make it look like a police bike. Otherwise, I can change the colors. should reflect nice on the white too and since I have so much chrome it can setup a few lights there as well. right now highlighting the front wheel, engine and down light to the road on the back. Course, have to check it out in the dark and post pics here I assume to get opinions and changes. thanks.

Well, started to do the LED Kuryakyn Lizards today and darn it the controller does not work. Plug in the light and they come on fine full white and bright. Controller won't turn them off, change colors or from steady to flashing... NOTHING. So have to call them up and get another one. Hope it ain't a hassle. Was looking forward to posting some pics of it tonight. Maybe next weekend. Did get the windshield cut down though.

LOL, yeah my nerve block lasted about 10 hours, then Hydrocodon off and on for a couple of days. After that, mostly only later in the day, but sleeping was tough. So I did find a Hydrocodon with a Margarita chaser made going to sleep a bit easier. Once allowed to do the rehab it was better once into that. Passive rehab at 4 weeks, I was shooting IDPA competition at 5 weeks, then active rehab started at at 6 weeks. Granted it takes a good while to get past it all but trust me, it does get better. doing weight training now, lightly, after 11 weeks. Mostly the light weights and bands. Not much weight but feels good to put muscles and stretch those tendons a little. Gets those last nerves to wake up which inturn makes it easier to use your muscles. I will setup the weight machine at home this weekend to start light full range weights plus the rehab work. 11 major muscle and joint surgeries, kinda got the routine down pat. glad to hear it is progressing for everyone else too. Those just starting out, trust me, it will get better. Now back to my margarita.

'89 VR Brake Res. Chrome Cover Bolt
gwashorn replied to gwashorn's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Dingy, got the bolt in the mail today...THANK YOU!!! Fits great of course. I think now I know why I was missing the bolt too. I could not put the bolt in with the cover on. Had to take a drill and wobble out the hole in the cover mounting tab. Now it fits and sure looks better setting down like it should. Much appreciated for the effort. -
That is a great list and I need to add to mine up to that level. One addition, a good medical kit, that is the tools for you when you need them for you.

thanks and I was thinking about just the O-ring way if that works well. did not know if anyone had a slicker way of doing it. Glad to see the KISS theory is at work here. Thanks!

Best of luck and yes, take that pill about 8 hours after the surgery. You will know. two anchors, bone spur, cleaned up the cuff and a few tendons. Poked 5 holes in my shoulder. Lucky I did not have to have the bicep tendon relocated all back on Dec. 27th. had full range motion at first rehab at 4 weeks. shot IDPA matches at 6 weeks, riding bike at 8 weeks and seeing doctor today in HOPES of being released for weight training rehab after 11 weeks. No pain and full range motion. Do the work at rehab, mind the healing process and it will work out. those nerves, many of them, will stay asleep for weeks and as you heal and do the work one or two will WAKE UP and say HELLO! I am back!. Darn it hurts! Takes time but it gets there. So speedy recovery, little pain I hope and don't expect to get much sleep for the next few weeks. Best of luck.

OK, I looked at previous threads and did not see this. I need a couple of flag mounts/supports but wondered. I have the dual shorter antennas on my '89VR. I could slide them down them to their bottom but then how do I HOLD them their? anyone ever do that? I still need a couple of mounts for up on the trunk but I have never had one. Bike came with one but missing the top piece like I see many here have commented on. Advice? Thanks.

YUP found the page for the bell order. Sent it in. Thanks a lot!

I think the chart is really for CRANKING of engines at 12 vdc. It fits pretty close to how the automotive and other industries size cable. Also, it depends on the strand count as noted. For example to keep wire size in large installations and bending radius we use locomotive wire due to the small strand high strand count for flexibility and current range for diameter of cable or wire size.

OK, I have been away from my computer for a few days and obviously have missed things. I would like the patch and/or sticker and the bell. Just need to figure out what, where and how to pay. thanks1

Strange chart of sizing since it does not state the percent voltage drop it is based against. I am assuming this if meant for motor starting of the starter which can stand a higher percent voltage drop. Standard industrial plants voltage drop for most distribution systems is design max of 3% which for most loads let you go several hundred feet. So you need a voltage drop parameter for the chart. This table suggests an extreme amount of drop. Just something to keep in mind.
