reliable ride
Black wing replied to Florida G's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
the bikes are great i too have it as only means of transport and it has only let me down once, with a bad rectifier. you will spend a lot of time wrenching, but if your smart it'll only be for preventative maintenance. any bike new or old will tell you its hurting before it quits and if you listen you will never find yourself on the side of the highway -

tune and tire time
Black wing replied to Black wing's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
i would just switch to the elite III's but the tread pattern is to minimal, i want at the very least a center grove but as close to a street and trail as these bikes can get. i ride in all weather all seasons as well as some out of the way places [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCLYw9zn6xc]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCLYw9zn6xc[/ame]. i really wanted to get a set of bridgestone spitfires but the weight rating is only in the 50's -
alright so its time for valves and tires i want the Dunlop 491 Elite II tires and can only get them online for $400 for the pair at the door, how much are you guys finding them for and where? as for the valves there dont seem to be a loaner kit in canada so what size shims do the ventures require and what was the best value pack of shims youve found? and if you can think of any "while i'm in there" tunes or upgrades let me know

Aftermarket TCI available!
Black wing replied to tvking63's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
aright so i put in my tci today whirled the bike over and nothing not a pop of sputter. do i need to initialize the tci somehow? i checked the loom to the diagrams i was given in the cd and it is good and the bike fires right up when i put the old tci back in -
i have 80W gear saver, and 15W fork oil in the front.

i think that was all squid vs experience. if he could ride worth a damn that harley would never stand a chance

the bike is supposed to run 20w 50, i run all bel ray in my bike, forks, final drive, and engine. i love it. but the ventures do need 20w50 10w40 is too thin

i chopped out the original radio and took the amp out of the fairing, used the stock remover for the radio for easy access. and installed a marine plate its very clean when closed and does an awesome job keeping the rain off the deck. i also ran an antenna for the XM onto the trunk. used some textured black plastic to fill the voids. only material used was black textured plastic and Norton plastic epoxy

been there, always infuriating. at least she still runs and will get you home.

has been 20 degrees C for a week and a half minus today and yesterday. though got in almost 400KM down this weekend

its just a basic marine cover i got from the local audio shop there are no real clearance issues, the cover can be opened and closed while riding; but while opening the cover or closing it you have to do it without getting your hand between the top of the cover and the handle bar but is pretty easy. Also to power the radio you have to run a wire from the radio to the battery or an accessory panel if you have one, i'll post pics later of that. but the stock wiring harness cannot deliver adequate power and will constantly shut down and restart the radio. though i am still using the harness to connect to the speakers and ignition wire. also this is a mod for those of you who do not use the cb as the cb amp has to come out for this to fit in.

so i finished the venture finally figured you guys would like to see what 3 months of tinkering leads to. by the time all was said and done there was quite a list of work and parts on it. gas tank stripped and lined new carbs from MasterGuns new fuse panel and accessory panel wiring harness cleaned up any chaffed section removed and replaced new regulator new fuel lines and filter new body work all body screws replaced all new lights (moose lights still need new lenses) new radio with serious satellite new fork seals new main oil seal in final drive rebuilt or replaced brake calipers and pads all around new blinker relay trailer hitch installed class re-soldered and pump cleaned and rebuilt progressive fork springs new spark plug wire and new spark plug boots new exaust pipes theres probably a few things i forgot and a few things i still want to tweak but it looks and sounds great and there is a few shots of my radio install since there is always someone looking for radio upgrades. i modified all the existing hardware so i cal still pull the deck out like i did from factory and looks very slick and non intrusive to the dash

so im trying to get the electrical up to date on my VR and have the fuse box from buckeye http://www.buckeyeperformance.com/p22.htm and i picked up a new accessory rail and i just dont seem to have the room others do under the top of the foux tank. when ever i try to put the cover back on the cover hits the fuse box and stops almost a half an inch from the hook. is my battery bigger than stock? if any one knows the height of a stock battery it would be appreciated

forks are limp
Black wing replied to Black wing's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
both springs are over 18" and this was not an issue before the oil seals were replaced. -
so ive rebuilt the forks twice now, and i cannot figure out why they will not hold a load, there is 400ml of 15w fork oil and was primed very well. i though it would hold this time but even with the air on high i can bottom out the shocks giving the bike a good shove down. has anyone had this issue? they worked just fine before i replaced the oil seals but i just cannot get them working right now. even the ones on the spare bike i have which were professionally built are more limp and flat than mine
