so ive got a spare frame sitting around and will be moving into my new shop end of the fall so ive been mulling over the difficulties of shoving an 1800 vmax motor into a first gen ( i know drool over the concept). from what i can see in the parts diagrams the new vmax only has one bar in the back with two x braces holding it from the top, and if i could get the engine lined up to have the output shaft fit into the swing arm will the vmax drive shaft reach or require me to machine a custom one? i am also aware they are fuel injected and will require a whole new harness to make the first gen electronics and the vmax ignition to run

i dont have a pic but if you go to the left side of the carb bank (sitting on of couse). and reach up between the overflow tubes just behind the gold rail that holds the end of them and its right there. very hard to get a grip on, you've probably felt it and dismissed it for being up and out of the way like it is -
water proof really isnt required as long as the grill is still there, ive got 4'' alpines in it and will soon be upgrading to 5 1/4" speakers soon, though this can only be done it you have gutted all the venting from under the fairing as the new brackets takes up where the vent used to be

we tried that on a tow truck at my last job, the entire truck cab was wrapped. the ends and seams came up pretty quick around wheel wells and joints. the rest adhered quite well and didn't peel and further though on some thing as small as a trailer i can see it having a very hard time to grip. on the other hand my buddy wrapped his quad and its still on solid and taking quite a bit of abuse. though to keep the edges down after he wrapped it he would the wrap about a 1/4 inch from the edges and then tape a line 1/2 and inch up the tape then sprayed the bottom lip with rocker guard. its done a good job of keeping the edges from getting pulled up by wind or debris

Thermal Problems
Black wing replied to maknak's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
sounds to me like your gauge is stuck with age, try holding your volt gauge to the back of the thermo gauge and see if the voltage rises as the bike warms. is the fan kicking in or are you not risking it? -
i dont get how you guys are getting such high mileage, i get 23 mpg with my trailer and 31 mpg with out it

ok so i got some starter issues, i built a new starter modded it with a ground strap and installed it tested and it worked perfect. but now i've got the whole front end on and bam the starter is acting just like the old one wont work unless i tap it with a hammer first. the pos cable is in good shape the cylinoid is working correctly but it just wont work with the front end together. any ideas why?

another valve adjustment tread
Black wing replied to Black wing's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
ok so valve adjustment done a total of 6 valves were done all 4 on cyl 1 one on cyl 2 and one on cyl 3, and just for anyone new to the task doing cylinders 3 and four to tdc i used a spade bit with a spade atleast 1/2 inch wide at the spade and used the shank to give me tdc through the spark plug hole. works pretty quick and the spade end will stop it from dropping into the cylinder if oily fingers have a slip -
cam 180 degrees upside down?????
Black wing replied to Black wing's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
crisis averted was looking at the wrong timing marks. one of those brain farts that come with doing a valve job at 3 in the morning -
ok so im doing my valves and the rear cylinders have a nice sweet spot where both lobes point up, but the front cylinders only have either point outward or inward then one goes down while the other goes up. the timing holes seem to be 180 degrees the wrong way. can that be right? would the bike ever run, i know the front cylinders always stayed cool untill 3000 rpm or so. dosent make much sense to me ive rotated the engine 6-7 times and those are the only positions i get

another valve adjustment tread
Black wing replied to Black wing's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
haha i remember a post about that -
so im digging into my valves and they are TIGHT. and its not heat the bikes been stripped for 24 hours now. i know by the state i bought the bike in it probably hasn't had an adjustment in 100,000 km now, but why would they be so tight that they seem to be riding the cam all the way around? is that normal do i just drop a few sizes measure up then adjust? also the timing marks tell me the tdc for cyl 1 and 2 but only gives me angles for the other 2 but there are no timing marks or points of reference on the flywheel to tell me where to go
-
so this spring i put on new brake pads all the way around my bike now the front caliper (hand brake side ) has already worn trough the set and the brake disk is even bluing from the heat. but the brake dosent seem stick as soon as i let go it releases and i can spin the tire freely with minimal to no heat. is this just something that comes from almost exclusively stopping with the front brake or is there another issue here?

yes bongobobny i see what your trying to say but these are out dated tech and most of us have up graded our suspensions and have different electronics. these bikes were designed with a horrifically weak charging system and every ounce of power we can save is needed. 5 amps may not seem like much but its 5 amps being wasted on something unnecessary
