oil sending unit
Big Auggie replied to Big Auggie's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Took it for a short run and no low-oil warning light! The real test will come later when I can get in a 100+ mile run. When I ran the carb cleaner through the oil sensor unit there didn't appear to be any gunk pouring out. -
oil sending unit

It was time to change the oil for winter storage so I pulled the oil sensor unit. I'm planning on running some carb cleaner in the holes in case there is some gunk in there. Any other suggestions? -
oil sending unit

OK, I finally found some old threads that said it's not a pressure warning but a low oil level indicator. That is making me think even more that I have a wire grounding out somewhere. Where is the wire for the oil sensor routed? I'd just as soon start from the bottom rather than pulling the instrument cluster out first. -
Since there's an idiot light for it I assume there's a sending unit somewhere signaling when the oil pressure is low. Mine comes on once in awhile for a few seconds. I'm guessing loose wire or bad sending unit. Wouldn't think it'd be the pump at 78K. So where is it?

New radio/intercom cable
Big Auggie replied to Big Auggie's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I've been looking at some older threads about this cable and several members gave links to a supplier that offered a YV-41 as a new substitute for the broken intercom cable (coming from the amp). I can tell you from experience that it will not be what your looking for if you have controls for the intercom & radio on your handlebar. Reason being there isn't a junction in the new YV-41 wire that allows you to hook into the wire coming from the handlebar control. I sent a pic of mine to J&M and they stated they have never made that part for Yamaha Ventures (with the junction). Soo.. what years of the first generations don't have handlebar controls for audio? -

The round part is where the issue is. The square piece looks to be glued/molded together. -

I purchased a replacement radio/intercom cable from J&M Audio a couple years ago with the intention of replacing my broken one whenever I got that far into the tupperware. Well I'm there so I break out the new cable and notice it doesn't have the junction where another set of wires joins the party. I'm assuming that is where the CB and Intercom come in so probably can't use the new cable. I'll call them tomorrow and see what's going on. I know where the old cable is bad as I can wiggle it near the connector and get it to work if I keep it bent at a sharp angle. Just one of those days!!

Top lid fix
Big Auggie replied to Big Auggie's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I'm curious as to how you attached the metal to the plastic. -
Just finished fixing the top lid on my trunk. It was cracked by the lower entry holes for the back rest. I had the local body shop weld it up and then I bought a small sheet of 1/8 " ABS and glued that in behind the backrest. Any body else had their lid crack in that area

Cable upgrade
Big Auggie replied to Big Auggie's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Cables are in, well worth the time and money! I paid $64 at the local Auto Value store. Nothing I couldn't have done, but I'm slowly learning to "pick my battles". -

The local weld shop no longer sells cable by the foot, I would have to buy a 25' roll. I ended up at a Auto Value store. I was able to examine a used piece of 4 gauge cable and felt it wasn't that less flexible than the stock cables so my new cables will be ready next week. -
Is it safe to assume all the plastic on my '89 Venture is of the ABS family? While pulling off some tupperware to replace my battery cables I found a crack near the speaker housing. I'm no engineer, but I wouldn't expect plastic to hold up to the bounce created by that heavy speaker!

That's what I needed to know. I'm sure one of the local auto parts stores can make some up for me. -
Decided to upgrade to the larger battery cables. I can probably get them made up locally, but is there a source for ready made cables for 1st generations?

Has anyone had luck finding usable grommets at their local hardware store? I need the ones that the back of the side covers snap onto and the ones where the front of the side cover snaps into. Also the gas tank cover grommet could use replacing.

Fuel line problems
Big Auggie replied to Big Auggie's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
After synching the carbs and putting new synch port caps on the bike is running out well. I was surprised by how the carbs get out of synch just sitting in the storage shed for 7 months! -

Yes the pump has quieted down now. Remembered I had shut off the fuel last fall and ran the carbs dry. I usually don't do that since I always run Stabil in my tank the last few rides of the season. Probably won't do it again either! -
You may have to replace the caps on the ports you hook the carb synch tool to. Mine ran similar to what ur saying and that's what it was. I change them every couple of years. Spray carb cleaner near the caps when it's running, if the rpm increases you've found ur problem. However, carbs sitting that long probably need to be gone through.

Fuel line problems
Big Auggie replied to Big Auggie's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Pretty sure I could always hear the fuel pump. It shuts off after a couple of seconds. I'm going to check the filter today. Thanks! -
Tried starting my '89 Venture today. It wouldn't fire until I sprayed some starting fluid. It's not out of gas as it has 1 bar left. I hear the fuel pump when I turn the key on. Have many of you had to replace your fuel lines? (For the record I run premium and no gasohol.)

Are there any online bike parts sites that offer discounts to VentureRider members?
