heal toe, to toe shifter
Yammy replied to showmebob's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
No adjustment was needed. I could never get used to the heal shifter, after cutting it off I have more room to change foot positions -

No apology needed. I was just looking for alternatives to a rear end swap. I suppose a rear end swap also effects each gear as well by a set rpm change. I'll bet it'll launch with a 150-70-15. Do both and you'd need a wheelie bar. I believe some with the vmax were using a 180 rear. Just had to do a washer swap. Don't know if it would work on the rstd.

I may be wrong here too but it's my understanding on a 150 width tire the 90 and 70 are percentages of the width so with a 15 inch rim a 150-90 150/25.4*.90= 5.3 inches *2+15= 25.6 inches vs 23.2 inches on a 70, same make and width tire say metzler converted to rpm 3305 and 3641 approximate. I used 4.2 as gear ratio.

Love this site, all angles are covered. Your right, I stand corrected, I never thought of the other gears. I did run an 150-80-15, don't remember the make. Got a flat and that's all they had. I did notice more giddy up.

The few extra rpm's may help prevent the lugging especially when pulling a trailer. Might be cheaper than the rear end swap?
-
Has anyone tried this? By my calculation and I may be wrong. It would increase rpm's by 344 @ 60 mph, calculated. The rear would be 1.18 inches lower but a leveling kit raises about an inch so it would be about the same and help 5th gear?

I have a Zumo, Iphone, and Scala. I use my stereo and speakers for the music and garmin directions. The scala for communications bike to bike and phone. The phone I leave in my saddlebag, water damage isn't covered by warranty. When traveling by myself everything work great. I have had some trouble when using bike to bike and scala. When taking a phone call or I get a direction from the zumo the scala doesn't always reconnect bike to bike? Maybe someone here has it all figured out?

Cruise Control Failure?
Yammy replied to Evan's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Try pushing the clutch lever out before engaging the cruise. The guys here pointed that out to me. I had to replace the brass pivot and the clutch lever, they were worn and the switch wasn't disengaging. -
I don't know about that! I ride with a lot of x-Harley bikers

(on the phone) hi honey, I can't wait for you to see my new ride

I'm on my third set now, I like them. I had 35000 on the first set and 30000 on the second, thats in kilometers. Compared to my bridgestones that didn't make 10000 kilometers. Dunlop maybe a little better. I'm no expert but it seems to me you have to run a higher pressure with them. The rubber is harder in the center, if your pressure is down to what the manual recommends the rubber wears on the outside faster than the middle. Making the tabs seem to rise? This set I'm trying 44 to 46 psi solo rider on the rear tire. If I was riding duel I might try higher? The front seems fine with the factory recommended 36 psi, again solo rider. I think the area you ride makes a difference too, 3 curves in 300 miles or 300 curves in a few miles. Wish I new what pressure is the best without all this trial and error.

Its also faster to drain the oil with a warm engine.

These aren't bike related but by the grace of God. My Dad was military we were stationed in France. As kids we played war, like most. The difference was, we had real bunkers, pill boxes and mine fields. Never occured to us that the odd cow that would step on a mine could happen to us. We ended up at a shouting range collected a few shells and digging in the sand we found the rest of the bullets. Drilled out the spent caps on the casings to put in a fuse and several packages of fire crackers. Light the fuse! I think everyone has a time. It's all about being at the wrong place at the right time. Much like taking a corner wide, most of us have. Most of us haven't met the mack truck going the other way.

Some new thoughts on clutch basket whine
Yammy replied to straycatt's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Does anyone with an 09 have a whine or chirp noise? -
One thing you can try and if the timing is right will cost you nothing more than normal maint. When you come due for a rear tire change, replace it with a slightly lower profile tire. There's probably someone here that can calculate what size you'd need to increase the rpm your desired amount. When I was at deals gap I got a flat and the only tire they had was a lower in profile. Having no choice I put it on. It increased the rpm's but I couldn't tell you by how much. No tach. I did experience a lot more get up and go. It surprised me. If your not happy you can go back to stock when it's worn and needs replacing.

Thanks guys. That's some manual. Mine was very vague. My frame was bolt together, not as elaborate. I took 10" out of the width. Guess I got lucky.

Before this thread is closed I would like to ask a question about toe-in or out as it applies to trailers. I have a limited understanding of the term, but mostly when it applies to the front of cars. What is confusing me is, if the axle has a toe-in, or out then wouldn't there have to be an indication as to left-right side, or front or back? I assumed any variance was due to the manufacturer, especially on a $129 trailer. When I bought mine, the axle came in a separate box in the main box It had no indication or which way the axle was to be installed. I could be having a senile moment though, I honestly don't remember any induction of direction of the axle.

I got talked into the shim kit but it wasn't the problem. It will be a temp fix, the bendix or maybe it's called an idler gear is the likely problem. After changing it, I was playing with it and it would slip when turning it one way and lock the other. I thought I had just wasted my money because it seemed okay. But it will slip only when it's in one position. In the bike you'd swear the gears are chewed up.

My wife had one. The starter problem is very easy to fix. There's a small bendix spring (that might not be what yamaha would call it). Anyway it locks one way and slips the other. It's likely slipping both ways, which won't let the bike to turn over. It's not an expensive repair and is easy to do. Just behind the side cover. There a nice bike Hope this helps.
