Dwight, I did much the same thing did. I started back about 7 years ago. A little practice at slow speeds and the RSV is a pussy cat even with a passenger. My wife who had never ridden before enjoys riding as much as I do.

Watching a guy on a HD at a red light trying to manage a cigarette and a cell phone when the light turned green. Wasn't pretty.

Like to ask Question on weight
GunnyButch replied to JOE MCDERMOTT's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
My wife gets on first the me. I've found trying to have her step on once I am on and the kick stand up can get pretty unstable fast. Once we are on turning the bars full right and holding the front brake brings the bike off the kick stand almost by itself. -
My mechanic liked the MT90 choice, said it would be his choice too. The rim size is correct for the MT90 so that is not a problem. Doesn't make sense to have you sign a waiver, all they have to do is look at the fitment guide for the rim size. I've been very happy with the performance.

20 years USMC retired at 43, working for the Dept of Defense since '98 and plan on taking an early retirement from civil service at 56 (Nov '09). After that we're packing up and moving back to the Louisville Ky area to be closer to family. I plan on putting a lot more miles on the bike after that, right now the miles are a lot less than I would like. Sure wish I'd saved a lot more when I was younger though.

I do put it in the trunk when the bike will be unattended. No sense tempting anyone.

You have a point but it is a very small con compared to the pros. The volume is controllable via the audio system though so that is all I need. I set mine on shuffle, put it in the tank pouch and let it play. The battery lasts for 8hrs or more if you let it run and remember to turn it off when you stop for extended breaks. I have both AC and DC power adaptor to charge it overnight depending on where we are or how we are traveling. My 4 GB NANO will store about 500 tracks.

I've had one and it does require taking a lot of off, split fairing, remove gas tank and seats, the panel behind the passenger seat. Once you get it installed it is garanteed to skip once in a while and take up a lot of room in the trunk or saddle bag. No room for 2 helmets in the trunk anymore. I took mine out and tossed it. Personally I'd recommend an IPOD or MP3 with a flash drive memory, no hard drives because they too will crash once in a while from the vibrations. You can plug them into your AUX port on the cassette or inside the fairing with an 1/8" male/male cord. I learned through expensive trial and error. Good luck.

For what it's worth. The Zumo battery lasted 5hrs 20min according to the internal timer just sitting there running. The charge wasn't fresh but showed full (4 bars), it had been about 5 days since it had been on the bike.

I changed my rear Avon last time at a little over 14K and it didn't have much left on it, still safe but just until the new one was mounted. The front should easily last through 2 rears, I put the MT90 on the front about 18 months ago.

I haven't put a clock on my battery but I believe it will last quite a while. The owners manual says 4 hours depending on use. I turned mine on in navigate mode and put it on the desk to see how long the battery lasts. We'll see.

Use the max cold pressure on the sidewall. The ride is a little firmer but the handling difference is night and day. You can always adjust the pressure in the rear shock. I've been using Avons at the max cold pressure for the last 4 years and wouldn't use anything else. I did try the lower pressures (Yamaha owners manual) when I first put the Avons on for a short while but didn't like the feel. I believe Yamaha recommended pressures contributed heavily to the short life and cupping of the front tire on the original Bridgestones. I'd recommned giving the max cold and Yamaha pressures a try under the same conditions for about a month each and see if you don't notice a difference. From everything I've seen on using lower tire pressures they result in more heat build up, wear, and premature failure. I'll get off the soap box now, enjoy your ride.

I have the Zumo550 and recommend it. It's easy to use, ready right out of the box nothing to download or accessories to buy. Has a cradle for the car, is waterproof, easy to use with gloves. The other features like bluetooth, music, and sat radio although you may not need or want them now will be there when you do. I've seen that the prices are starting to come down, if it's in your price range you won't be disappointed.

RSV lift frame adapters - improved model
GunnyButch replied to Carbon_One's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I've had one with the legs and pads for about a year or so and it works great. I have a Larin lift so I welded 3/4 in angle iron to each side of the lift to accomodate the adaptor and it fits nicely. -

2005 RSV Clutch & Brake Levers
GunnyButch replied to Rick Butler's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I put these Kuryakyn wide levers on mine, they look and feel good. Not bad price either. http://www.kuryakyn.com/products.asp?bn=metric&ci=2927 -
Last year I took the MSF experienced rider course and it covered all those tight low speed maneuvers. It was about 6 hrs practice/practical application and 2 hrs classroom and test. My '02 handled it better than some of the sport bikes. Very worthwhile if you get the chance. The safety dept on the base where I work has the course once or twice a month, it was free and got to go while on the clock.

I put them on mine just for the slash cut style, left them stock no drilling. I preferred the look of them over the OEM.

I replaced mine with this truck marker light. It bolts right up, no modification at all. One of the guys from the Star chapter here came up with it. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v325/gunnybutch/Light5.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v325/gunnybutch/Light3.jpg

Personally I like the Avons at max cold pressure on the sidewall.

iPod vs. the RSV 13-pin c-bus

That is what I noticed too and made me wonder. -

That looks like it would do it. Do you have one? Looking at the web site I wonder if the just the cable with the cbus/ipod plugs would work. The interface box had some square shaped plugs I'm not familiar with. -

If anyone figures this out I'd be glad to purchase one. I've got an adaptor that plugs into my F250 that works great. -
The "upside" was intended as satire. Either way I don't see it as a conspiracy by the manufacturers to shorten warranty periods since mileage is unlimited.

The upside is the 40k on your ODO is really 36K.
