  1. How to break in a new bike is a controversial subject. You might want to review this web site.... http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm and read the posts here... http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=10381
  2. you quoted my post in error???? N-E-Wayz, regarding the phillips screwdrivers, there are basically 3 sizes and generally you'll need the middle and largest ones. It's usually handier to have an interchangeable bit type. Having worked on many bikes, I've not found any instance that these would not work unless they are worn out. If a screw is too tight, a couple hard taps ...(with a ball-peen hammer of course!)...on the end of the screw driver (preferrably using the "bit" only of a removable or changeable bit screwdriver and not on the end of the screwdriver itself)...will loosen the screw enuf to turn it. Be careful doing this when it's the screws holding the plastic components on (now how do I know this?) LOL
  3. and, don't forget a ball-peen hammer and some silcone! oh yes...nylon ties and electrical tape.
  4. my feeling is...anything such as that or chrome "door-edge" moulding, etc around the edges of my windshield would only impair and distract my vision.
  5. yeeeeeee haawwwwwwww!! you got it! that's exactly the same way I got mine working again (not sure what I did but it works) ... kewl!
  6. Now, how would you know about that? (notice I'm not asking bongobobny because he said not to...) (hmmmm... maybe you guys know these things for the same reason's I do) gawd, sometimes I embarass myself!
  7. I had this on a previous Venture....tried and tried to "rub" them out but eventually wound up getting a new w/s. Word of advise... DON'T get one from Yamaha! I looked at your pics and there is definately a slight difference. My first thoughts are that the bike was re-painted with the exception of the travel bags -OR- both were re-painted but at different times and by a different painter. I do like the color! Remember, it's an '83 and chances are some (or a lot) of TLC may be in order. The main thing is that the engine and tranny is solid. Anything else is relatively easilly fixable and if you or a buddy have any mechanical ability, don't take it to a shop... all the help and tech info you need is right here!
  8. DITTO on the Sea-Foam! Have faith... it prolly ain't nuffin serious.
  9. I had similar problem with mine...can't explain it but after banging the mute button numerous times, including the one on the dash near the radio controls (not even sure if that's what it is...maybe it's the intercom button?), I finally got my tunes to blare out again. I don't use the CB or intercom so am not overly familiar with the controls/buttons for them but I'm guessing I had one or more of them turned off or on when they shouldn't be. (just my experience...may not be the solution to your issue)
  10. ummmmmm... check your "mute" button......
  11. found this...may help... http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=7841&highlight=side+stand+switch
  12. As per my "signature", you can always revert to that or even duct tape! Welcome....soon you will be calling this place your "home"!
  13. Been a long time since I did that on my '85 but I do recall a few "choice" words passing over my lips. Seems I recall that the front comes out on the right side and the rear on the left? I'd taken it to a shop originally but they did a sloppy job and things were leaking. got tired of argueing with the guy and decided to re-do it myself. I discovered that they only replaced the front gasket and re-used the old one on the rear because (as I later found out) they couldn't get a new rear one that day. IMO, they should have gotten the parts before they took things apart. Lesson learned.... if ya can do it yourself (or have someone you know who can do it) then stay away from the rip-off shops!
  14. And even more depressed when ya can't ride it coz the weather is so crappy!
  15. I'd suggest that some of those tabs are already "shattered" somewhat after 20 yrs of vibration. I've also found that if anyone has removed any of the screws in the past, that they sometimes over tighten them when re-installing, thereby "squishing" the plastic which of course causes it to shatter and fall apart the next time you remove the screw.
  16. Cathodes and Anodes .... "greek" to me...
  17. hmmmmmm.... I just jump on my bike and go for a ride...all the water droplets blow off! The faster you go, the quicker it dries!
  18. I used Autosol (comes in a tube..it's a creamy compound). For most of the work, I mounted a polishing/buffing wheel on my drill, cynched my drill into my workmate, applied some of the polish and buffed it out. It takes a bit of "work" and can get a bit messy but sure does a good job. Comes out almost like chrome.
  19. my '85 was like that and so is my '87. I never worry about it coz neither one of them failed to start.
  20. I would suspect that is probably the case as well.
  21. Thanks M8
  22. Did a search on the net...can't find valve stems that are 45 or 90 degree other than heavy truck ones. Where do you get these?
  23. BTW, have a safe and enjoyable trip!
  24. ummmmm.... GAS ???
  25. sure goes to show what a person can do with their time when they have lots of it and MONEY. dang... why NOT me? (I'da used a Freightliner!!!)
