My son has an '04 Sportster 1200cc ... I think it's an "anniversary edition" coz it's got lots of chrome, fancy paint job, etc. Anyways, on a number of occasions he's tried to "show up the old man" but even me riding two up, he can't keep up. He get's a bit of a jump on me off the line but that only lasts until I hit 2nd gear...hahaha gotta luv it!

Question... why is it that most of these "type" of Harley riders always ride side-by-side instead of in the staggered form that most all other bikers ride in? What is it about them that makes them feel that they, and only they, can do this? Personally, I hate riding directly beside someone... it forces me to be more attentive to stay in that "track" and be constantly watching to ensure neither of us are getting too close to each other.

'Supersport' motorcyclists have highest death rate
SilvrT replied to SilvrT's topic in Watering Hole
You're right, of course...but it's better than nothing at all. This being Canada, I really don't know if there is a specific law and if there is, is it federal or provincial? Any Canucks out there have info on this? -
'Supersport' motorcyclists have highest death rate
SilvrT replied to SilvrT's topic in Watering Hole
I do recall hearing on the radio, in the spring, the announcer talking about drivers being more aware of motorcyclists as well as scooters "now that the nicer weather is here". That, of course, is good but certainly not enough. -
'Supersport' motorcyclists have highest death rate
SilvrT replied to SilvrT's topic in Watering Hole
Two things about this that I see... a) it's more difficult to mentally calculate the distance and speed of an oncoming motorcycle. b) both drivers (auto's and bikes) need more "awareness" to this. More specifically, the auto driver. This, of course, isn't counting those "I didn't see the biker". In such situations, I feel the onus is more on me to ensure that the oncoming cager can see me, regardless of whether or not they are making a left turn. If they are, then I make a point to pay close attention to the driver, what they are doing, do they see me?, ... anticipate, anticipate... defensive driving is crucial to survival on a motorcycle. -
'Supersport' motorcyclists have highest death rate
SilvrT replied to SilvrT's topic in Watering Hole
Riding with a windshield almost eliminates the necessity for eye protection. When it's night time, I always ride without eyewear. Nothing comes close to my eyes because the windshield and fairing deflect it...with the exception of rain. In that case, I put on clear glasses. Truth is, I rarely ride at night when it's raining. I'm not suggesting; however, that eye protection shouldn't be worn. Riding without a windshield and without eye protection is simply stupid IMHO. -

I agree with that! I'm wondering specifically what bikes are in "Touring class" and "Cruisers". Improper classification would affect those numbers. Additionally, there are probably 10 times as many cruisers out there than tourers so that could also "cloud" the true picture. Having said that, something has to be used as a "baseline". "figgures never lie and liars never figgure" change the baseline and ya get a whole different picture! -

Going 'Neutral'.
SilvrT replied to NLAlston's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I had trouble getting both my '85 and this one ('87) into neutral while the engine is running. Two things I discovered... 1. revving the engine a bit while shifting helps getting neutral. 2. if the oil level is above half way in the sight glass, it's harder to get neutral whereas if the oil is below center, closer to the bottom mark, it's easier to get neutral. Having said #2, I now never fill my oil beyond center in the sight glass.- 6 replies

rear fairing on venture
SilvrT replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
check ebay for the louvers...not sure if they're still available from Yamaha but I'm sure you could buy them separately. Someone on this site might even have extras. -
rear fairing on venture
SilvrT replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
BTW, they're not fiberglass but rather, ABS plastic so there is some "give" to them and not as brittle as fiberglass (I don't believe). -
rear fairing on venture

pull the seat off and the battery/electrics cover (false gas tank). then put some penetrating oil onto the areas where the plastic "tangs" snap into the rubber "O" rings...let it sit for a while then gently pry each out. There's only 2 as I can recall...one at the top front and another down a bit. I've replaced the rubber "O" rings on mine with generic rubber grommets and mine are quite tight now and I had to file the tangs a bit to make them fit but they're still quite tight and require a good yank to remove them. -
IMO, for simplicity, looks, and durability I'd recommend acrylic enamel ... assuming you're using a compressor / spray gun.

This is very interesting... I always thought WD-40 was a type of automotive air conditioning... (Windows Down - 40 miles an hour) :sign20:

exhaust collector box trouble
SilvrT replied to gord's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yamaha still has the collectors but they're quite expensive. If you can't find a used one, there's also a custom one available. http://markspipe.com/ Here's what they quoted me... We do make a collector assy. for your Venture. stainless steel is $301.49 and ceramic coated steel ( silver or black ) is $ 241.65 Shipping will be about $ 20.00 to Vancouver and it will take about 4 weeks to get it done as we do not have any in stock right now. How to fix cracks in 1984's trunk?
SilvrT replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If it's an '84 then it must be a removable trunk. That being the case, the "hooks" probably need snugging up with rubber or something so that when latched into place, there's no movement. I've also done some plastic welding on mine using a "standard" soldering gun with interchangeable tips. I put the "flat" tip in and melted the crack together. In some cases I added extra plastic from an old piece of ABS pipe. Gotta be careful not to do too much in one area at a time otherwise it melts right through and warps the visible side of whatever you're fixing. (how do I know this? LOL). -
Smoke shows do have a tendency to reduce the tread life of tires....

It Looks Like I'm Down.
SilvrT replied to NLAlston's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You have a great attitude! Even if you may not get much riding in this summer, you will most definately learn a lot about these bikes and moreover, you'll have an "intimate" connection with your "baby". Once you get her all fixed up you'll feel a major sense of pride that she's "YOURS"! This is all a part of becoming "one" with your ride. Stick with it, don't give up, and don't become discouraged. I know this contradicts what I said earlier about "dumping it" but I could see in your words a level of discouragement and I was just hoping for you to be able to enjoy the ride. I am starting to see now that these many problems you're having might actually be a "blessing in disguise". ^5
