  1. a torch for what?? If you're referring to cutting it open, I used a cutting wheel on my hand held grinder .. probably could also use it on a drill. BTW, I tried the duct tape approach... it's only good when the exhaust is cold! LOL
  2. btw... make sure the welder you find can weld stainless steel ... did you find the post in here about how to open up the collector and remove the baffles? I know there's one someplace coz that's what I used.
  3. If the collector has any leaks (ie holes), then it will suck in additional oxygen and cause the fuel rich gasses inside to explode, causing a backfire. Had this happen on my '85 (backfiring) and when I took the collector off, there were splits where the mounting brackets were attached. I'd suggest removing the collector and thoroughly inspecting it for leaks. Might be a good time to cut it open and get rid of those loose & rattly baffles.
  4. as promised... before paint & after. Held on with 2 countersunk machine screws & nuts. The piece is actually 3 separate pieces glued together. Cost of materials...appx $3. I had to heat the base of the stand and "melt" it into the top piece of nylon because of it's non-flat underside so that it would fit properly and disburse the weight evenly.
  5. pretty much the same here but, like I said in another post...it's easier to put warm clothes on and turn up the furnace than it is to take clothes off and get outta the heat.
  6. I have an '87 also... sound to me like yours is running pretty badly... mine has lot's left at 150mph and I can pull the front wheel at 15mph in 3rd gear....
  7. That particular piece came with my XM radio. I zap-strapped mine to the mounting bracket just under the radio. Makes it easy to unplug and move the unit to another vehicle.
  8. That's terrible. Extremes in either direction can be deadly.... We shouldn't be complaining here coz it's a whole lot easier to put more clothes on and turn up the heat than it is to take them off and get outta the heat. I like it warm but having over 100 degree temps for an extended period of time is too much .... and we do have areas up here that it can be like that.
  9. currently 52 here with a high forecast of 55 today, 57 tomorrow...overcast & rain both days..we've had our furnace on now for a week...had it off almost all of May.
  10. I had my sidestand break on my '85.... it broke at the base of the " U " (the part where the bolt goes through). On this bike, I had it apart just a week ago to inspect it...all looked good but the bolt had a bit of wear on it...and there's some "sloppyness" but I never measured that. I also manufactured an "extension" out of one of those nylon cutting boards so that the bike doesn't lean over so much and for better support on soft surfaces. Pics to follow.
  11. ya... been looking into some of these already...question becomes how much does one invest in such things for a 12 year old vehicle worth less than $3000 ???
  12. Seems I needed a lesson in "how NOT to wash wool sweaters" ... :rotf:
  13. I'd be interested in those pics...I've never done anything with my fuel filter on this scoot or my '85 ... guess I never needed to but it would be a good preventative maintenance thing. I got a bunch of that to do soon, especially before I head off to Los Osos in August.
  14. Truck should be at the body shop Monday...I'll be able to do my own inspection then (which the ins co requires anyway) ... then it all depends on the shop's work load as to when they'll get it done ... I hope not too long but at least my insurance covers me for a rental vehicle. So far I haven't needed to rent anything ... we take public transit to and from work and can take a taxi elsewhere if we need to (also paid for by insurance). One thing this "experience" has done for us is that we've now decided to continue taking public transit to and from work all the time whereas before, we'd drive the truck up to where the skytrain station is...instead now, we take a bus there (it's only 2 blocks away to the bus stop). We'll save on the gas cost and the truck won't be exposed to the thieves that prowl the skytrain area. About 5 years ago I had my other truck stolen (I mentioned this in another post)...same kinda truck...when I got it back it had basically the same damage (door handle and ignition) ... the thieves stole all my music (casettes) but left a really good horse blanket, another good blanket which I now use for the beach and a nice pull-over sweater which I'm still wearing LOL.
  15. Thanks for the "thanks" and the prayer my friend. I'm not a "like minded" person; however, I am appreciative of folks like yourself.
  16. Seems there are extremes either one way or 'tother going on...gawd, it's been so long since I've experienced over 100 F temps... but to be honest, even tho I like warm...that's just too HOT!! Could we have just some of it???...how about 10 or 15 degrees??
  17. Typical ... when they can't figgure it out ... start replacing things one by one until the problem is gone... You wind up paying for a whole lotta things you didn't need.
  18. I disagree on that...if anything it will push the RSV style scoot far ahead of the competition as long as they do a few more small refinements such as maybe built-in CD, GPS, XM, etc (creature comforts) , reverse would be nice ... offer ABS, adjustable/vented windshield, more color choices, as options. IMHO, the RSV is already on par with an Ultra Classic and has a far better warranty. Goldwing, although similar "class" is the "Cadillac" of the 3 (or should I say the Mercedes).
  19. I say " IXNAY " to the trailer for that exact reason. I once saw a guy who had his somewhat large dog in an open cage sitting on a trailer behind his bike. I asked him..."have you ever sat behind a vehicle when it is running and inhaled the exhaust? Would you? (NO) ... then why subject your best friend to that?" ... The guy just wasn't thinking and he admitted it.
  20. It would be interesting to know what the statistics are in your area compared to others that would support your belief. Not being "debating" but I'm not 100% a believer of that concept although I can tell ya, if I happened to see a jerk attempting to steal my truck or break into my house, etc, if I had a gun I'd probably shoot the bum first, ask questions later ... and that's where I think the concept goes wrong. Having said that tho, if the threat of being shot was commonplace for would-be criminals, they might...just "might" think twice about such things..... so many pro's and con's to this one eh!
  21. It's been so long since I felt safe enuf to live as you do I can't even remember what that was like. We live in an area that, a couple years ago, had the highest rate of auto thefts in all of Canada. I did live way out in the country near a very small community between 1980 & 1983 and nobody locked nuthin around there but before that I probably locked things up for many years. Even after we moved to the country, I was locking the doors etc just as a foce of habit. I'm sure I was the only one in the area doing that LOL. I guess it's all a matter of where ya live and it's getting to the point that there are fewer and fewer "safe" places anywhere on this continent.
  22. yep... some vehicles are "special" and we never stop wishing we still had them. I have a "thing" for '94 - '96 Dakota's ... unfortunately they are 12th on a list of 25 most commonly stolen vehicles LOL.
  23. cops recovered my truck about 20 miles away in another city. Only "visible" damage is to the door handle and the ignition switch (according to them). Probably be a couple weeks or a bit less by the time I get it back from the repair shop tho. I haven't seen it yet so not sure if the jerks who stole it ran the crap out of it or not or just exactly what overall condition it's in. Was probably crack heads needing transportation for either themselves or some stolen property.
  24. It seems more like November or maybe February based on the weather this week. Today's high temp is 10 celcius (49 F) ... normals would be 18 c (64 F). The whole week is going this way... what happened??? May was great...warm...sunny most of the time... I'm even sporting a "farmer's tan" from being out in the sun.... 3 weeks ago I was in my cutoffs...no shirt..and looking for shade! I could go up to the north country and find warmer weather! sheeeeesh! Global Warming??.... not here! If anything, it's getting worse.
  25. HONEY!!! where have you been all my life??? Actually, that would be a good one for me...it's about the only way I'll ever have hair on my head again
