  1. I wuz just takin a "shot" at Shot ... I knew about the change .... I figgured it was an ideal opportunity to get a "cheap shot" in ... and I just know that one of you guyz is gonna give me a "shot" right back! welcome aboard Shot... hope yer not into guns LOL
  2. I did mine 2 years ago... I think I used paint stripper but can't really recall for sure. I polished the covers using a product called SolvAll Autosol. It's an aluminum polishing compound. Mostly I used a good buffing wheel on a drill plus a lot of "hand work" for the nooks and crannys. I didn't put anything on afterwards and they still look good. Takes a bit of practise with the buffing wheel and it does take a lot of work to get them buffed up to be "like chrome" but it's well worth the effort.
  3. your nickname shows up as "Shot" so why do you want to change it to "Shot"? If it's already "Shot" I can't understand why anyone, with a nickname of that would want to change it to "Shot"..???
  4. I just bought an '06 in Nov. I've had an '85 and an '87. The '85 had a whine and the '87 has a growl on deceleration... I learned to live with both conditions. My '06 has a whine... because I've ridden the other 2 bikes, and I know the sounds they make, it's not much of a bother to me although I do notice it. I don't think mine is as bad as some have reported but it's still there....and I will simply ignore it and enjoy the ride. I generally have my tunes on anyway and that pretty much eliminates the annoyance of the whine. Further, I am installing the Road King mufflers which apparently are a bit louder than the stock pipes and have a nicer tone so that also will take away from whatever whine there is. here's a link to where you can hear what the RK mufflers (and others) sound like on an RSV http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/index.php?action=article&cat_id=002009&id=285 I bought this bike because a) I couldn't afford a new Ultra (which was my first choice)and b) the RSV is a fantastic bike and there's nothing else on the market that even comes close. hope this helps some.
  5. Here's what I use for heat in the garage and out on the deck. Works great and doesn't cost a lot in fuel. The heater itself cost $63 not including the tank.
  6. My '87 does the same...I noticed that the leak at the elbow only happened when I ran the bike. My '85 had the drip at the by-pass drain valve. Same as you...only in cold weather.

Been on a lot of ferries in this province...between here and Vancouver Island, between Ft Langley and Maple Ridge, between Needles and whatever that other side is called (lol), between Nelson and "that other side", between Revelstoke and Nakusp (there's a name for that one too lol) .... small ferries, big ferries, steep inclines over metal grate, etc.... never really had any problems... guess I been lucky!

  15. How about re-torqueing the bolts? Never really had this problem on any of my scoots. As an added note, years ago I had a Truimph Bonneville 650. They were notorious for oil leaking. I rebuilt that engine and the only actual gastket in it was the head gasket. I used silicone on all the other mating surfaces. Never had any leaks after that.
  16. heh ... here in BC they recently passed a law that no establishment can openly display cigarettes. You go into a store and generally, behind the cash counter, is a wall of smokes... now the wall is covered. The idea is that if ya don't see them, you might not be inclined to buy them ... B/S! ... If you're a smoker, it isn't the visibility of the smokes for sale that entices you to buy a pack! Furthermore, they also recently passed a law that says no one can smoke in a public area that is within 3 meters of any public building doorway or air intake and Vancouver went one step further and increased that to 6 meters. So, essentially, if you smoke, you really can't walk down the street without breaking the law! For a while when that law first came out, every security guard in every building was kicking smokers away from the building entrances... that was maybe 6 or more month's ago... now, they can't be bothered because to enforce it would take up too much legal resources, ...police, courts, fine collecting, etc etc. Now, I tried quitting a couple times ... hasn't worked...yet ...but frankly, all these "penny-anti" tactics are, IMHO, silly. If smoking is so bad for a person, then why not just make it illegal and be done with it. Smoking pot is illegal and it has nothing near the ill effects of cigarettes and the reason it's illegal is nothing more than the government can't come up with a "legal" way to profit from the growing, distribution, and sale of the stuff. Booze is legal just like cigs yet they do everything they can to dissuade people, rehabilitate smokers and drinkers, ...there's more money spent in that process than a person can imagine ... it's their only way of justifying the taxation of it. ok, I stop now... the hair on the back of my neck is rising (and I have none)

  19. FYI... I changed to synthetic on my '87 (which has a Barnett clutch) and it immediately started slipping. I changed back to regular oil but that didn't cure the slipping. I think there's stuff in the synthertic that messes up the friction plates on older bikes that have been using regular oil for so many years. (seems I read elsewhere here something about that). So, maybe not a good idea to change to syn oil??? ... In any event, I doubt it will increase the longevity of that thrust washer...at least not to any reasonable extent.
  20. The idea of using the opening where the cassette was would be a good place to mount some gauges. A guy could make a nice faceplate that either fits the opening or overlaps, painting it to match the dash of course.

  25. So, it's Saturday, it's raining/snowing, I have nothing to do. Have my fairing split to install an extension to the Aux Audio line coz I removed the cassette and I was thinking about auxilliary power switches for things like driving lamps or whatever. Remembered seeing others with those chrome 3 switch boxes on top of the front brake reservoir (I like those) and also remembered the nice rocker switches below the gauges on the Harley Ultra so, I started fabricating and came up with the following.... First pic is the Factory "bare bones" cruise switch. Second 2 pics are the completed result. Rest of the pics are in order of build process. I had some flat 1/8 thick (appx) 2" wide aluminum that I'd used for something or another. I cut a piece 6" long. Used a cardboard template to determine the appx cutout below the cruise switch. Made the cut and then realized I needed tabs to mount it. Was going to use some angle brackets but decided it would be easier and cleaner to bend the existing aluminum so I had to re-cut (hence the "fixed up" pic). Also realized that the original size (using angle brackets) would hit somewhere near the ignition switch when the wheel was turned to pin. Made the bend and checked for positioning. Cut the holes for the switches ( appx 5/8 by 1 & 1/8 based on the rocker switch I used). I drilled a hole big enuf to get a jigsaw blade in and then cut to appx size with that...then used a file to finish off, checking often to get it just right so that the switch would pop in (forgot to take pics of the switches but I used the kind that have little "pressure tangs" on the back) I drilled 4 holes for mounting screws and used some short sheet metal screws and screwed them right into the plastic. I drilled small pilot holes first. After all the cutting, filing, and checking for fit was done, I smoothed all the edges, roughed up the surfaces, cleaned it with thinners and painted the bracket with a "textured metallic" paint (black of course). I toyed with the idea of smoothing and polishing the aluminum but I felt it would not blend with the overall look. Rocker switches mounted....not yet connected to anything but hey... one day they will be!
