Windows 10 Upgrade Review, Tips, Tricks, and Traps
SilvrT replied to SilvrT's topic in Watering Hole
Next thing to do is tweak the Windows Updates Click into the Search the Web and Windows box and type Windows Update Click on Windows Update Settings in the list that pops up In the screen that appears, look for 'Advanced Options' ... it's kinda greyed out and it's on the right near the bottom. Click on that. Change the 'Choose how updates are installed' to 'Notify to schedule restart' Check the box for 'Defer Upgrades' Click on 'Choose how updates are delivered' Click the "Toggle" to turn off this feature and click on the 'Back' arrow top left of the screen. While still on the 'Advanced Options' screen, at the bottom click on 'Privacy Settings' There are several areas in here where you will want to ensure things are turned off. As you move back, you will get to the System settings. There are many things here that you will want to consider turning off as well. Once you gone through all of this "turning things off" process, you are now ready to start testing your various apps and peripherals to ensure they all work. One particular item that I had difficulty with was my copier/scanner (a cheap Canon item). Been a long time since I installed Win10 on my home PC so can't recall where I got drivers from but a great little program to use (and I think it had the drivers) is VueScan. Google it. ... more to come ... -
Windows 10 Upgrade Review, Tips, Tricks, and Traps
SilvrT replied to SilvrT's topic in Watering Hole
Once Windows 10 is up and running, the first thing to do is find Internet Explorer. The new "Microsoft Edge" may not be to your liking (it wasn't mine) so I prefer to use either Internet Explorer or some other browser. Click into the Search the Web and Windows box and type Internet Explorer ... it will appear at the top of the popup. Right-click it and choose Pin to Taskbar so that it's easily accessible. To ensure it becomes the default browser, hold down the Windows key and press R (Win+R) to get the Run screen. Type in the Run box google.com and press Enter. You will get a popup that is asking which browser to open it with and there will be a check box at the bottom "Always use this app". Check the box and click on Internet Explorer. -

Once the install process starts, it takes quite a long time (appx an hour and a half) downloading updates and completing the install. You computer will restart itself a couple times or so and eventually you will be presented with ascreen that says "Hi there, Welcome back!" and a NEXT button at the bottom right of the screen. Click it. You will then see the "Get going fast" screen. STOP!!! At the very bottom you will see "Customize settings" ... CLICK THAT Turn OFF each item in the screen that appears and click NEXT Turn OFF each item in the next screen EXCEPT Browser and Protection and click NEXT. On the "New Apps for the New Windows" screen, click on "Let me choose my default apps". You can then take the check out of ALL the boxes and click NEXT Windows will now finalize your settings. The screen will go blank for a while and then it will display "This won't take long" as it finishes setting things up. .... more to follow ... -
I'm starting this thread to document the process of upgrading our work PC's for those of you considering this "challenge" or have already done it and are having "issues". Performing such a major upgrade is no "simple task" and you should prepare yourself with as much knowledge/information as possible. Google the subject and read up on the pros and cons, be prepared so that you won't be disappointed when some things go awry or don't work as you expected. There are some new "features" in Win 10 you might not like but for the most part, they can either be disabled or uninstalled. Minimum specs Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster. RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit) Free hard disk space: 16 GB. Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver. A Microsoft account and Internet access. Read this information on Microsoft's site for more info... https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows/windows-10-specifications I STRONGLY recommend you CLEAN UP your computer before attempting this upgrade. Get rid of crap you no longer use or need. Defrag your hard drive. Run ccleaner to clean out temp files and optimize your registry. I also recommend, if you can, create an IMAGE of your computer and save it to an external drive. If you can get it, download the file MediaCreationToolx64.zip, extract the .exe and run that, then follow the instructions I've added in the attached document. Look down middle of this page for the download link. https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10 UpgradeWin10.doc .... more to follow....

I'm curious to know the pros and cons of going from a house to a 5th wheel. Was it a big adjustment? Are you enjoying it? Wife and I are contemplating selling our place when we decide to retire and buying a class A motorhome and just travelling for a couple years with motorcycle in tow of course.

Gosh gee by golly gomer .... I've been using Win10 on my home PC and wife's laptop for almost a year and I've never experienced some of the crap some of you are claiming (mostly on the other thread on this topic). It has worked flawlessly. No degradation in performance at all from Win7. I am now beginning in depth testing for our work computers. I will come back later with a full review.

Inovative police crackdown on texting and driving
SilvrT replied to Beau-Kat's topic in Watering Hole
Here's how it works on 1st offense... "Starting June 1, first-time offenders will receive the $368 ticket and $175 for four penalty points on their driving records, for a total of $543." And then... "Repeat offenders will pay the same $368, but will receive escalating penalty points for each offence within 12 months: 2nd offence: $368 + $520 in penalty points = $888 5th offence: $368 + $3760 in penalty points = $4,128 10th offence: $368 + $14,520 in penalty points = $14,888 Repeat offenders will also face an automatic licence review, which could result in a driving prohibition of three to 12 months. Drivers in the graduated licencing program will have their licences reviewed after a first offence." -

They've just upped the fines here. It's now $368, up from $167 for 1st offense. Then it gets tougher after that. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/bc-distracted-driving-law-change-1.3573249 The cops are also now using a high-powered telescopic lens on a camera to catch people long before they see the cops on the side of the road. What's better is they now have a picture versus just an "I saw you". -
The stickers are unique to tweeks ... the new bike is pristine and should stay that way IMHO

Several years back we were returning home from a Venture West gathering in San Louis Obispo (SLO for short). We were travelling through Yosemite and the roads are narrow and twisty. Of course, there just had to be an old couple in a cage ahead of us going slower than the posted 30mph speed limit and after a few miles of that I was getting anxious to pass. As we exit one corner and approach another, I'm looking as far ahead as I can for an opportunity and I'm geared down and ready to gun it. An "opening" appears on a right hand corner and I crack the throttle and start going around the old couple but CRAP!!! A car is coming towards us. I clear the old couple's car but I'm moving pretty good and leaning hard as the on-coming car and I meet. Thought for sure we were gonna hit but I leaned further into it and it was just enough for us to pass by without colliding but I'll swear to this day the tires of our bike kissed the tires of that car. pphhheeeewwwwwwwww!!! It was several miles after that before we had a spot where we could stop so I could check to ensure I hadn't crapped my pants LOL

Couple years back I was on a ride with a buddy and his wife (each on their own bikes). Matter of fact, he's a member here. Anyway, it was the end of the day and we were heading back to their house. We were approaching the city where they live and pulling a long, straight hill on a 4-lane. We were in the left lane, buddy and his wife ahead of me, passing a truck / camper trailer rig in the right lane. Buddy and his wife got by but as I'm about mid-point of the trailer, the guy in the truck decides he wants in the left lane so he starts moving over. I'm blasting my air horn but he's not hearing me and by this time I'm right next to his door but it was apparent he had no idea I was there or he was and didn't care as he kept merging left, squeezing me out as there was a concrete barrier separating us and the on-coming traffic. All I could do at that time is brake hard, let him get over, and then pass him on the right. As I go by him I'm blasting my horn and giving him the "salute" but he carries on as if I don't exist.

I love this story. Lay down what's bothering you, breath in the fresh air and LISTEN to this story. Time is like a river. You cannot touch the water twice, because the flow that has passed will never pass again. Enjoy every moment of life. As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery in the Nova Scotia back country. As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn't stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play. The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I've never played before for this homeless man. And as I played "Amazing Grace", the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished, I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head was hung low, my heart was full. As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "I never seen anything like that before, and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years." Apparently, I'm still lost....it's a man thing. When you have stopped laughing be sure to forward this on to others who would enjoy a good story.

I spend fairly equal time here and on the Victory site. On both forums guys post about smokin a Harley rider yet I've not once seen a post where someone blew away a Victory (on this site) or a Yamaha (on that site) ... nor has anyone spoken of beating a Kawasaki Voyager or even a Goldwing ... whatz up wit dat? I think I'll see if anyone coming to Kruis'n Kootenays is up for a little race ... then either they or I can post something other than "I smoked a Harley today" .... ( ahem ... not likely a Venture is gonna beat my Vic in any race.. ahem... ahem)

A woman from Vancouver - who was a tree hugging NDP'er, an anti-hunter, anti-pipeline environmentalist - purchased a piece of timberland near Squamish, BC. There was a large tree on one of the highest points in the tract. She wanted a good view of the natural splendor of her land so she started to climb the big tree. As she neared the top a spotted owl attacked her. In her haste to escape, the woman slid down the tree to the ground and got splinters in her crotch. In considerable pain, she hurried to a local ER to see a doctor. She told him she was an environmentalist, an NDP'er and an anti-industry person and how she came to get all the splinters. The doctor listened to her story with great patience and then asked her to wait in the examining room and he would see if he could help her. She waited three hours before the doctor re-appeared. The angry woman demanded, "What took you so long?" He smiled and told her, "Well, I had to get permits from the Environment Canada, the Parks Service and the BC Department of Land Management before I could remove old-growth timber from a 'recreational area' so close to a Waste Treatment Facility. And I'm sorry, but due to the Provincial Medical cut backs they turned you down. You may wish to try Dr. Suzuki. NOTE: for those south of the border who might not know.... an NDPer is someone who's political preference is the New Democratic Party here in Canada.
