Got the scoot back around noon today after having the clutch I-basket installed. Put on a few km's (maybe 150) and there's not a whole lot of difference. Whine still comes in around the same rpm as before; however, it is a wee bit quieter ... a bit more tolerable. Maybe after a few more miles and a fresh oil change ..... whatevah ... I'll accept it as-is and just ride! Also got the carbs sync'd ... they were off quite a bit ... she purrs very nice now ... even the RK's sound better!

Successful carb sync
SilvrT replied to Jethroish's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I just got my scoot back from getting the I-basket swap and I had them sync the carbs while it was there... they were out quite a bit. I watched the guy do it and it took him all of 5 minutes from the time he walked up to the bike with the carbtuner to the time he walked away with it. FYI... the I-basket hasn't made a lot of difference to the whine. It's still there ... at the same rpm but it's a tad quieter. -
here's an interesting item in that website... http://www.gizmag.com/bmw-motorrad-navigator-iv/12175/

Split Open The Fairing
SilvrT replied to dnager's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
There's lots of articles in here (somewhere) about splitting the fairing. I'll try and find one and post it. You have to remove the chrome piece at the base of the windshield and the screws in there that hold the w/s on. Also, there's one screw below the headlight. If you have the driving lamps, you'll probably have to loosen them so that you can move them out and down a bit. If you got all the screws from the backside out (I think there's 4 on each side) and those I mentioned above, then it's a piece of cake to remove. -
Does all 1st gen bikes have a whine?
SilvrT replied to coltrain's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My 85 would whine when rpm's were around 3000 +/- ... I hated it ... I had that scoot for 6 years ... loved the bike but hated the whine. Only thing i could do was try and stay away from that rpm. Now I got an '06 ... guess what? ... same thing! Taking it in for the clutch basket change tomorrow so we'll see if that helps any. Also had an '87 ... no whine at all ... wished my '06 was as quiet of an engine as that '87. -
hope you didn't take my comment the wrong way... I was razzin ya some. I also have a hearing problem ... not sure how the sounds of the bike are picked up (or not) but when I'm in a crowd of people and everyone's talking, such as in a noisy pub, I have a really hard time hearing what the person next to me is saying unless they are looking right at me and I am concentrating.
-
so, are you saying the RK's and the radio DON'T drown out the noise at easy cruising? :witch_brew:

These engines, IMHO, are a bit "persnikety". I've had 3 Ventures and this one is no different. Sometimes they purr like a kitten and other times they seem quite noisy. There seems to be no consistency ... sometimes when I start off and take it up thru the gears, it's very smooth and quiet. Other times the whine is real bothersome and other times, most noticeably when pulling a hill, the engine seems quite noisy yet it doesn't seem to be that way all the time. I'm getting my clutch basket changed this coming Saturday. I'm also changing out the oil coz it's due so will post the results after I've ridden it for a while.

I use Maxthon web browser ... been using it for years and years ... I've found nothing that entices me to change ... am I the only one as I never see any one else in here mention it.

I wonder how true that is.... it would seem to me that any factory reps are gonna be tight-lipped if they even know anything until the company issues a formal statement. If Kawasaki feels the market is there for a brand new tourer in 2009, then Yamaha will likely follow suit in 2010 (1 year after having the same scoot on the market for 10 yrs) ... I'll even bet there will be a 10th year Anniversary edition (in the 11th year). ?????????? It will be interesting to see but we've still got a while yet before anything public comes out I think.

All I can add is that I am a Dell fan. -
heh ... I don't think there is a scoot made that Condor would have trouble flat-footing ...

I looked at that warranty and it's very open to "interpretation" favouring Yamaha (as many warranties would be). Regarding the fork seals, what's considered normal life time of fork oil seals? If, hypothetically say 4 years is normal and they start leaking in the 5th year then that's beyond their normal life and may well not be warrantable. On the other hand, if they start leaking within the 4 years, then most likely defective and warrantable. In other words, if they start leaking after what's considered their normal lifetime, then they aren't defective, they are just worn out from normal wear and tear and therefore are not necessarilly covered under warranty. hey, I don't work for Yamaha ( LOL ) ... just looking at it from a different perspective ... a perspective that may be used by a dealer. :witch_brew:

Just my guess but I'd think such things as fork seals are not covered under a warranty ... similar to brake pads ... they are a "general wear and tear" maintenance item. Perhaps if the fork seals started leaking within the first year...??

removing collector
SilvrT replied to chocking's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I followed a similar article and it wasn't all that difficult of a job ... just a bit time-consuming. You'll probably have to replace the gaskets tho and they aren't cheap. -
This '91 is driving me nutz.

Mother: Um, Junior... do I hear someone passing a series of popcorn farts? Junior: No Mother, that's just a little mouse riding through the house on a motorcycle. -
Beware using your debit card at the gas pump
SilvrT replied to Venturous Randy's topic in Watering Hole
It surely wasn't an accountant who dreamed up that confusion "Debit or Credit" on a gas pump. Up here the pump automatically assumes to authorize for $100 but you get the option to enter any value. When I gas up, I always punch in $15 and that's just about the right amount. -
Mine had the "clicking" sound in the rear wheel from dry pins ... never lubed from the factory. I pulled the wheel off, cleaned the pins and lubed them.."clicking" gone. Can't say for how long that lasts but I've had 2 other Ventures ('85 & '87) which have the exact same setup and never had the clicking sound coz the pins were lubed when I got the scoots and I only lubed the ones on my '85 once when I replaced the rear tire the first time. Mine has the infamous "clutch basket whine". It's not too bad but does get annoying once in a while. I'm taking it in to have the basket changed out to an " I " basket under warranty. This does not necessarilly cure the problem...it's kind of a "hit and miss" scenario. For some it cures it, for others it just changes the whine to a different rpm. As for general overall maintenance, on my 2 others about all I did was change oil and filter and ride 'em. I put about 70,000 kilometers on my '85 and only had the carbs sync'd once and the valves adjusted once. Hope this info helps...I'm sure you'll get a lot of feedback from others. Overall they are great bikes, low maintenance and good for a lot of trouble-free miles.
