Lilbeaver... thanks for the comments. I was, at one time, a bodyman/painter and had my own shop (like about 27 years ago) so I had a good knowledge of what I was doing. Unfortunately, I just didn't have the right place/equipment at the time when I painted my '87, thus, the use of the spray cans. I did use a good quality 2K clear "spray can" supplied by the same paint supplier initially but I wasn't 100% happy with the end result so I went out and bought a compressor and a gun and pretty much re-did the whole thing again LOL. Still tho, I was working under much less than ideal shop conditions. Speaking of MurrayD... I haven't heard much of him since that ride. I should drop him a line.

There is no absolute cure for the chirp/whine. The " I " basket swap is not a guarantee. The reason some don't whine and others do is that the clutch basket gears match correctly with the primary gear but that is just a stroke of LUCK and that's about all you have to go on by swapping the clutch basket...IMHO. The mechanic who changed mine said that back in the mid 90's when this problem first developed, they would have to take dial gauge readings of the lash of the gears and submit that to Yamaha and they would send out a basket that would provide the correct gear lash. Nowadays they don't have the time or can't be bothered (probably because there are so many of them) so they just send out an "I" basket and if it works, you're one of the LUCKY ones. BTW, changing mine made no difference. I'm beginning to think that this so-called "I" basket is nothing more than a smoke screen to make a person think they're actually getting something "different".

hey Rick (lilbeaver) ... did you happen to take a good look at my '87 when you were up here (the Black one) and we all did that ride to Manning Park? (MurrayD was riding it and owned it at that time). I repainted that with "rattle can" paint; however, the paint was mixed and "bottled" at an auto paint supply shop. It was actual automotive base coat, not 2K. The clear was professional grade clear applied with compressor and gun.

Danged lucky guy. Yep, those bears just come flyin out of nowhere ... had that happen to me once. Thankfully, it was ahead of me and travelling at an angle away from me but I still had to hit the brakes real hard to avoid it. Danged thing just looked at me and kept on running ... by then I was mad as h3LL so I chased it with horn blaring and me screamin. LOL

Question for anyone who thinks they are an "expert" motorcyclist.
SilvrT replied to GG54172's topic in Safety and Education
I'd hate to see what would happen, using the front only going into a corner, if you hit a slick spot. I use the front brake ONLY as a "trail" brake for the rear and to provide the extra stopping power when I need to slow down real fast, or when coming to a complete stop but I would NEVER use my front brake in a corner. Maybe I'm reading you wrong tho... "going into a corner" ??? Do you mean "approaching" the corner BEFORE you set up for the turn? ... if so, then yes, front would be used by me too but not without the back also. I find the front dives too much if I only use the front brake.- 18 replies

SilvrT replied to GG54172's topic in Safety and Education
Your comment about "relative upright posture" made me think a bit (yes, sometimes I do that LOL) .... when I'm taking a corner, I do tend to keep my head relatively upright, meaning I keep my head and thus my eyes as perpendicular to the road as possible ... not sure why I do this other than to keep the "scene" in normal balance so to speak.- 18 replies

Question for anyone who thinks they are an "expert" motorcyclist.
SilvrT replied to GG54172's topic in Safety and Education
Speaking of brakes, I use both except in a corner..then only the rear. Speaking of leaning, I rarely lean my body to maneouver a corner, I always counter steer. About the only time I lean is when it's a real tight corner and I'm taking it quite fast...then I lean to reduce the lean angle of the bike. Dunno if this is right or wrong...it's just how I do it.- 18 replies

Spoke wheels require "tuning" of the spokes to a) align the wheel, and b) ensure all spokes are of equal tension. Not to mention the work involved cleaning them. A real PITA. No advantage whatsoever over "solid" wheels IMHO.

Regarding Goose's post, check this out ... maybe you can find this product where you live. Clear #1- UV Resistant Clear Coat http://www.u-pol.com/countries/en/navigate.htm I used it and it does a good job but it's not cheap ... almost $30 a large spray can here.

Thanks Curt ... I stand corrected and I did do further research on this and that's what they do alright. Now I gotta go back to that "know-it-all" Harley owner and tell him he don't know nuthin..... (LOL that's my son) :rotf:

it's a strange one alright .... but when I click on it, it goes to the tickerfactory website. What about changing the URL to the actual "full" addy of http://www.tickerfactory.com/ezticker/ticker_designer.php

Gen 1 vs Gen 2 ???
SilvrT replied to Patrick46's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I've owned both gens... an '85, an '87, and now an '06 ... IMHO, 1st gens (83-93) are very different in performance and handling to the 2nd gens (99 - 09). The 2nd gen, at least for me, is much more comfortable on long rides. It's not as "sporty" as the 1st gen and as such, I don't ride my '06 as aggressively as I did either of my 1st gens. I also feel that the '06 is not quite as powerful (maybe due to gearing) as the 1st gen and the 83-85 "MKI" models were a bit more sportier and seemed to have a bit mor power than the "MKII" models (86-93). That's just my opinion. Having said that, I really love riding my '06 ... much more so than either of my 1st gens. I like it's looks a lot better too although that '89 with only 210 miles on it sure makes me drool LOL After I got my '87 all repainted and decked out tho, I drooled over it too.. maybe I'm just a "drooler" hahaha -
Some "pinstriping" is definately painted on but I'm referring to the lines that either divide a color break or are accent lines on a single color bike (similar to our Ventures). According to information I've been able to "dig up", including posting a Q on an HD forum, they are "stick-on" as opposed to "painted on" albeit they may well be applied by a "robot". However, I am still not convinced so am doing further "digging" on this simply because I am getting conflicting information and I'm one of those "make me a believer" kinda guys LOL

hmmmmmm.... I'll have to double-check on that (just coz I hafta) LOL... ok, now I know what a RaT is... hahaha gawd, do people actually ride those things? (I know they do but....) ... actually, there's a guy around here that has a scooter that's definately a "RaT" ... one of these days I've GOT TO get a pic of it!
-
In studying those pics, it certainly "appears" that it may be correct. I'd doubt very much that it would be 100210. If, in fact, those are the true miles, what a GEM that bike is! It sure does look good!

Pretty well anywhere in the Canadian Rockys ... couple specific routes... Kananaskis route thru Peter Lougheed National Park (west of Calgary) Columbia Icefields (hwy 93) from Banff to Jasper Hinton, Alberta, thru Jasper to Kamloops via hwy 16 (the Yellowhead) and hwy 5 hmmmm that was three (not a couple) wasn't it... heck, I could name several more LOL
