  1. ahem!!! ... I haven't read this entire thread but ... should we be publicly talking about all the stuff on our YAMAHA's that come loose and/or fall off??? I mean, isn't that an exclusive thing to HARLEY's? We don't want this leaking out to the public now do we? :rotf:

    New Tires

that's not much of a step up from stock coz I got over 10k miles on my stock tires and there's still a few thou left. ???? I do notice that the front wears as fast or faster than the rear. Kinda kills the old "2 back to 1 front" rule of thumb.
  10. For those who don't understand what "we're" complaining about I offer this suggestion.... Get yourself a large tuning fork, hold it close to your ear, and bang it with some other metal object ...... now, does that bother you? ...NO? then do it again, and again, and again...eventually it will .... Now you know what "we're" complaining about. The constant, high-pitched whine, over time, can be a real bothersome sound. Some can handle this while others can't. Mine "can" be bothersome...especially if I am forced to have to run it at slower speeds in 3rd gear or even 4th gear a lot where the rpm is right "in that range" for an extended period of time...such as following slow moving traffic. Sometimes I will break that "drone" by shifting up or down but you can't always run it in a gear up or down...you need to be in the gear you're in and staying there puts you at that certain rpm where the whine is most bothersome. So, yes, sometimes mine gets to me but for the most part I can run it outside of that "window" and it's good. for example, if I'm cruisin around 100km/h in 5th, the whine can, over time, get to me so I drop a gear for a while... but that higher rpm can also be annoying after a while too so, back up to 5th or, if the conditions allow it, I will speed up to 110 or 120... generally around 110 in 5th, the whine intensity is almost gone. It also depends on if you're going up a grade of any kind...even the slightest...will cause the whine to increase. It would be so damned great not to have to do all this fiddling around...changing gears, increasing speed, wearing ear plugs, putting on louder pipes, cranking the volume .... just to "get away" from a blasted whine! One should NOT have to deal with all this just to ride such an otherwise awesome bike.
  11. and how does one know his limitations??.... by pushing the limits
  12. I saw that blue & white '55 ford and many memories came rushing back as it's exactly the car I used to have when I was 20. Paid $295 for it and it took me 4 paydays (paid weekly) to pay the car lot and drive it home... I was so proud ... wooooooo ... if only I still had that baby (the car!)
  13. Exact same thing for me on Sunday... a GW rider pulled up and parked beside me and right away he was oogling my ride... but had no idea what make it was and worse yet, thought it was a V-twin coz the first thing he asked is "how's the vibration..." LOL and I told him "what vibration...there isn't any" and I pointed out it's a V-four, water cooled Yamaha Royal Star Midnight Venture ... aarrrr arrrrr arrrrr arrrrrr ... oooooggghhhhh (like Tim the Toolman used to do) LOL he was quite impressed!
  14. I always like the "heads I win .... tails you lose" kinda bet! (almost got my wife on that one the other day)
  15. I do that also but the fact that I'd not had good sleeps Friday night or Saturday night plus the 14.5 hours on the road Saturday were the contributing factors to the fatigue after 5 hours riding on Sunday. Like I said, I should have crashed for an hour or so at that campground. Hindsight is 20/20. I don't know why I push myself like this sometimes but for me, when I get on the scoot, it's like I'm in another world and it feels so good I just don't want to get off. I can be feeling sick or grumpy or hungry or, even tired and all of that seems to go away when I'm riding. Guess I'm not alone on that one!
  16. I had my tent and sleeping bag too and earlier in the morning sunday, enroute home, I'd stopped at a camground / picnik area that I've been wanting to check out for years. The sun was just up and giving off some warmth and most of the people had cleared out already.... I was contemplating rolling out my blanket and snoozing for a while.... I should have!
  17. Took off Sat morning solo with my camping gear for a weekend ride. Spare a lot of details but 14.5 hrs on the road Saturday...lack of sleep both Friday night and Sat night, and another 5 hrs riding Sunday I was feeling very tired and fatigued and just wanting to get home ... consequently, not all my attention was on the traffic and the situation ahead of me. Long... very long straight stretch of 2-lane... no traffic approaching... way ahead is a mini-van and ahead of that a small car. I eventually catch up to them...to the point I could no longer see the car in front of the van (which is pretty normal). The van's brake lights come on, it starts to move over to the shoulder...The van is still going about 80km/hr. but slowing down ... I'm thinking it is going to pull over and stop so, I dropped a gear and pulled out to pass. OMG!!! the small car is making a left turn and by this time, I'm beside the van, the car is into the turn and directly in front of me....maybe 50-100 yards...I dunno...it was very close!!! and at my speed, .... OMG!!! .. I hammer the brakes real hard and lock up the rear and not sure but I think even the front... the bike starts fishtailing... OMG!!! I thought for sure it was "my time"... but, years of riding and quick thinking and reactions I'm sure saved my skin. I let off the brakes and gave it throttle, regained control of the bike and shot...literally shot between the front of the van and the rear end of the car that was fully perpendicular in the left lane, moving into a side road. I kept cranking it on for about 1 kilometer coz I knew if I backed off, I'd start shaking myself....kept telling myself over and over to remain calm and eventually, the "panic" of the situation left my system. LESSON: Don't let fatigue get ahold coz it can be deadly! From now on I will NOT allow myself to get so over-tired. I should have rested a lot longer at some of my stops along the way. I had lots of time to do so.

    Road Rage

life in general is not calm and peaceful anymore and many folks nowadays don't even know who their next door neighbors are. We are stressed out most of the time and don't even know it. We get irritated very easilly and "road rage" is commonplace. It is increasingly more difficult to "walk away". I frequently have to stop myself from acts of rage at others stupidity and inconsiderations .... there are so many more people out there who just don't give a damn about anyone else but themselves and if you say anything about it, they're ready to stick ya with a knife, shoot you with a gun, or gang up on ya with their buddies. It is not a safe world anymore. If you want to be an agressor in it, be prepared to defend yourself. Otherwise, it may be better to turn your head the other way.

  21. yep... another "crotch rocket" ... cool looking tho. One thing I don't understand (well, there's ton's of things I don't understand but..) ... why is there so much clearance at the rear between the tire and fender? These bikes aren't used for jumping hills, etc ... they're basically "flat-tracking" so what's the need for so much clearance....???
  22. Ok ... inside the muffler is a "tube" (I'll call it that) that runs the length of the muffler. This tube is perforated. Inside the tube there are little "baffles"... basically thin metal "stoppers" that block the exhaust gases from going straight thru and force them into the muffler chamber thru the perforations. Eventually the exhaust gasses are forced out and are "muffled". These "baffles" are quite thin and can easilly be "drilled out" using a 1 & 1/8 inch holesaw and a 12 inch holesaw extension. You take the muffler off and drill the baffles out from both the back end and the front end. You will see them in there. Here's pics of the holesaw with extension and one of the cut out baffles
  23. You're ON !
  24. he states that $3,000 was spent getting it road-ready after a long storage... brought to mind that one that was posted with only 210 miles .... an indicator of the extent of bucks a person might have to fork out for a scoot that has been stored for so long with low mileage. Sometimes a low mileage 20+ yr old scoot ain't necessarilly such a good deal eh? Unless of course somebody has already done the work (as in this one).
  25. I made my own out of 1/8" x 2" aluminum stock. Just angled it to fit, drilled some holes and trimmed one edge for appearance. Nuthin to it.
