I tried to find one in their on-line catalogue but could not. I do seem to recall tho that what's available in the stores is not always in the catalogue. Seems when I was looking tho, the US Sears showed the M/C jacks on-line.

Now don't laff at this but... mine was pulling to the left (with no hands) also... I posted a thread about it and there were a lot of possible "fixes" but the one that worked.... I said don't laff... adjust the position of you body just a bit to the right on the seat. I kid you not... it worked! As for the wobble, mine didn't do that but I'd double check your tire pressures and put 2 lbs more than what the manual says. I run 38 in the front and 44 in the rear. (manual says 36 & 41)

regarding the smell....nobody suggested that maybe it's time to change your shorts ... :rotf: sorry, couldn't resist!

I think that tube will drip oil if you overfill the bike. Generally speaking you should not fill it much higher than the middle of the sight glass .... more than that won't hurt it any (unless you put wayyyyyyyyyy too much in) but you will get that dripping. Happened on mine too.

should the gas cap and tank get hot?
SilvrT replied to jdzimme's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Good bit of info .... with this in mind I guess it would be a good idea to query the shop if they have techs experienced on the RSV before giving them any business. Just because it says "Yamaha" on their door doesn't necessarilly mean they can work on ALL Yamaha product lines. When I had my '85 I found the best Yamaha Venture mechanic working at a Suzuki dealership. Of course, warranty did not come into play with it. -
I run 35psi in the rear shock and zero in the front. I tried 5psi in the front but did not really see where there was any difference. Maybe I just didn't go over the right kind of roads. Dunno why you can't get air into the front tho...???
-
I know I have some cupping on the front but I'll have to check the rear (tire) tonight for that. The noise in the turn is not an issue for me; however, I will be replacing both tires this winter. What's strange (to me at least) is that the front has worn a lot more than the rear. Cupping is, among other things, related to improper air pressure. I had been running the rear at 42psi but bumped that to 44 a couple month's ago. The tire howl has been happening since back in the spring when I only had 3 or 4 thousand kilometers on them. It's been getting progressively worse as the km's have been racking up but, as I say, it's not that big of a deal to me. I had the same issue with my '87 with the Avon and then when I got a nail in it, I replaced it (with another Avon) and the tire howl went away. The one with the nail still had a lot of tread left at the time.

yeppers! If anyone knows what the tread depth is when these tires are new, I will do a comparison reading when I get home tonight.

Rear Splines. etc. Parts List
SilvrT replied to N3FOL's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Eck ... in the case where the axle does bind, this would indicate a mis-alignment issue and may require a shim between the pumpkin and the driveshaft housing at the acorns....correct??? -

I agree ... the splines that go into the U-joint should be inspected & lubed, especially if it's never been done before. Yamaha is pretty stingy with such things and I know this from having to lube the "fingers" inside the rear wheel. They were bone dry from factory and were already starting to corrode. I did that around 8,000 kms (5k miles). -
I have over 18,000 kilometers on my back tire (that's over 11,000 miles) and it's still looking good. As for the "roar", mine tend to do that when cornering... but so did my Avon's on my '87 when they got over half worn.

Years ago I sold new & used cars for a living. I did this 4 different times...once for a Toyota dealer, once for a Ford dealer, once for a Chev dealer and once for an AMC/Jeep dealer (I did say it was years ago LOL) Here's how dealers "deal" with a trade. Let's say the car you are buying is new and has a sticker price of 15,000 Let's say that is 3,000 over dealer invoice. Let's say they give you 5,000 for your trade (but place a real value of 3,000 on it) You get the new vehicle for 10,000 So, doing the math, they just made 1,000 profit on the new vehicle (they gave you 2,000 more for your trade than it was valued at so that is subtracted from the original markup). Now, let's say they sell your trade for 6,000 ... now they just made another 1,000 All the profits generated from the subsequent sale(s) of the trade(s) goes towards the profit made on the sale of that one new vehicle. If there were successive trades on the trades, a dealer can conceivably make a lot more profit than if they sold that new vehicle at "full pop". Of course, all deals don't go that way but generally they do. Change the process... You sell your vehicle privately for 5,000 You buy the new vehicle for 13,000 (2,000 off for cash deal) dealer still makes his 1,000 profit and has no further worries if he'll make or lose on a trade. You got the new vehicle for 8,000 ... 2,000 less than what you did with your trade. Lesson to be learned...if you're going to trade, shop around and be tough and get as much as you possibly can. Well, that's how it was in those days... things may be somewhat different now but I suspect not a lot. Further, if you finance thru the dealer, oftentimes you can get a better purchase/trade deal.

I notice exhaust smell too ... not always but when I do it's when I come to a stop .... maybe after I have been decelerating hard... can't really say as I've never thought a lot about it. I've noticed this on other bikes too. It may just be that the expelled exhaust is floating up to your nose due to air pressure, wind direction, or a number of other things... (just a wild guess here)

You might get a strong exhaust smell of it's running rich. ???

Rear Splines. etc. Parts List

I don't think you'd want to use RED loctite on anything that you're working on here. BLUE is the one to use. You could use the blue loctite on all of them...shouldn't hurt a thing. But then again, I may be mistaken ( -

The only seal I know of is the one where the driveshaft goes into the pumpkin but you shouldn't have to pull that because the splines inside there are lubed by the oil in the pumpkin. But then again, I may be mistaken ( -

gotcha now... you want to grease the u-joint at the engine side of the driveshaft. Bushings??... news to me. -
Oct 17th will be "D-day" for me as that's when my insurance runs out. We've been very fortunate with the weather. Did the Christmas Toy Run on Sunday and then rode up the valley and back for the rest of the day. Gorgeous sunny and quite warm day for this time of year. Sure hope we get a bit more of this weather over the coming weekend.

What exactly do you need the seal for... you don't need to remove the pumpkin for a tire replacement. (or am I reading this wrong?) -
I spend my entire work day on here.

I have a '96 Dodge Dakota V8 and I considered hauling my RSMV home in the back of it when I bought the bike but everyone commented it was not a good idea so I rented a U-haul trailer. Being able to find a loading/unloading place was lucky for you and that's one of the reason's I went with the trailer instead. I'm pretty sure the Dakota would have hauled the bike OK due to the fact that it's larger than an Explorer plus that it has a V8 ... although I'm not really sure of the payload capacity of the truck.

Jinksy4 ... would you mind mapping your route out on Google Maps and posting or sending that to me. I'm asking because Gunnison is the proposed location for next year's Venture West rally and the wife and I are hoping to see some of the grand canyon and stop at Las Vegas on the return trip. Your route sounds much like one we might want to follow. Great pics! and thanks for mentioning the survival gear.
