First of all, I would NEVER ride without a helmet. That, to me, is the most important safety device available. I have been riding since 1968 and putting on a helmet is just second nature, not to mention that around here, it's the law and always has been. The rest of the gear varies depending on time of year, weather, where I'm going and for how long, etc. I do not own chaps or leather pants and probably never will ... just don't see any real benefit other than a) looks b) additional protection. I own a good padded jacket and will wear it as long as it's not too hot. The only reason I have that jacket is it's super warm, dry, and wind resistant. Before that I wore thicker shirts and a leather jacket when temps were cold. I almost always wear a good pair of boots or stiff leather "hiking" style shoes.

Unless there's 2 of them, this looks danged near identical to one of our members from my area (WuzFuzz). There isn't much that this scoot doesn't have!

I test rode the '09 Ultra several times and although they do shake at idle, it has been reduced and dampened so much over older models, it's really not bothersome. Once you start rolling, there's no shake at all...in fact, they're very smooth. Plus, they now have that engine cylinder cut-out which helps at idle. To be totaly honest and even though I do like my RSMV, if I had the bucks I would be riding a new Ultra.

It should be on the LEFT as you sit on the bike.

I'd heard that a dealer doesn't like to take in warranty jobs on vehicles bought elsewhere because it infringes on their ability to "look after" their own customers in a timeley way. (that's what I heard...)

2008 Venture performance
SilvrT replied to a topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Not even into it's "performance" range so less than 1/2. -
On the top right corner of the post, there is a Post # ... 22 for one of them. Click the number and it opens just that post. You can then save that to your Favorites. Also, if you Right-click on a pic, you get a menu where you can choose to "Save picture as...". This will allow you to save the pics to a folder on your computer.

Story of how steve and hi 83' VR known as "Tent Peg"
SilvrT replied to massey130's topic in Watering Hole
Been riding the '87 for about 3 years. Had done a complete repaint, plastic repairs and all ... added some bling, polished the engine cases, etc etc... she looked good, ran good but was getting up there in miles and with not too many years to go before retirement, I wanted a new or newer bike and have it all paid for before then. Summer 2 years ago started looking at Ultra Glides ... went on Harley demo days a few times over the years and again that summer...twice. Loved the '09 Ultra and prices were still decent so started getting serious around Sept, 2008. Unfortunately, we couldn't swing the payments unless we did the deal over 7 years which was just wayyyy too long... I wanted something paid off in 3 so, started looking at RSV's for max of about $14 grand. Found one listed here on the site. It was an '06 Midnight, in Calgary, with only 1300 kilometers ... crap, that's brand new! Called the guy, got some details, had a buddy in Calgary check it out... it was mint. Made a low-ball offer and we settled on $12,900 I wanted it bad. Talked to the bank and got the financing plus a bit extra coz we'd have to travel to Calgary and trailer it back. Made the trip first part of Nov, 2008 and brought her home. Unloaded about 100 miles short of home and rode the rest of the way (Nina drove the truck) ... yeeehaaaaawww!! She's now sitting with about 23,000 kilometers and a lot more "bling" and we're lovvin it! The '87? .... 'nuther guy here on the site is now riding her and from what he tells me, it's still purrin. -
Too much whine:?

/me slaps forehead .... here we go again! I bet there are more threads on this topic than anything else and I also bet a guy can find at least two posts exactly the same many times within this forum on this topic. Do a search guys... you'll have several days reading material All i can say is, the I=basket reduced my whine by at least 50% and dino oil seems to work best but I am still experimenting. -

Here's a tip... they generally don't have to ship the "old" part back for 2 weeks so get the service mgr to give you a 2 week test and if it isn't better or it's worse, have them put the old one back in and pay a reduced labour rate. My dealer was going to do that for me for $50. -
yep, lots to learn... welcome the Engine, Clutch, Trans are all lubed by the same oil in an RSV. What bearings on what shaft are you talking about?

My 2009 RSV and Whine
SilvrT replied to rumboogy's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
If you do a search for I-basket or clutch basket, you will find lots of info on how to change it. If you're at least a bit familiar with wrenching on stuff, you should have no problem doing it yourself. -
U-ohhh.... the accident I witnessed Tuesday ... one of the drivers was .... ummmm ... well, not caucasian...

engine temp n hesitation upon starting
SilvrT replied to somedudenamedev's topic in General Tech Talk
Both my '85 and '87 were like that when hot (the starting thing). The temp gauges on these bikes tend to appear as reading high. I've never had an overheating problem with either bike. -

Great vid ... now if only someone with a "non-whiner / chirper" could do a similar vid so we'd all know what we're missin. -

It would be cool if you or somebody could do a similar video to the one in the "Too much whine" thread with sound to show the rest of us what a "non-whiner / chirper" really sounds like so we have something to shoot for or at least know what we're missin. -

I got that too ... had it on my '87 and my '85 ... I call that one a "howl" . Seems to get more "howly" as the tires wear down. -

Whatever their "assessment" is, ultimately it is what's acceptable to you IMHO. Same thing happened when I took mine in for an assessment... "sounds normal to me" they said. I said it wasn't acceptable and I wanted the I-basket swap. They tried to convince me that it would probably not make much difference ... "we've done 4 of those and it made no difference" they said. I said I want it anyway so they went ahead and got the ok from Yamaha. I'm glad I perservered coz I surely would have gotten rid of the scoot if I had to live with the way it was. -
Too much whine:?
SilvrT replied to GOINtoHELL's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Mine was definately worse than that before I changed to the I-basket. It wasn't bothersome until I got in a certain RPM range which was mostly noticeable in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th .... unfortunately, it was that rpm range that I was in most of the time so I'd either have to upshift and lug it or downshift and then it'd be revving too high for my liking. I also noticed the whine at low rpms, even idling but it wasn't an annyonce then. Now, I have no whine at lower rpms and only a slight whine when I get to those "normal riding" rpms. I am noticing tho that as the miles wrack up after an oil change, the whine seems to be more noticeable. I'm currently using Rotella T non-synthetic but I think I will change the oil soon (even tho it's not due yet) and try the Rotella Synthetic. I am also using the MotorKote additive. All experimentation eventually leads to something that will become a keeper....or not LOL I have the RK slash-cut mufflers and they are drilled out ... sometimes I find them a tad too loud but for the most part, I like them. -
We also have intersection cams and that's how it works... the owner gets the ticket and it's up to them to deal with it if they weren't the driver. Years ago we had Photo-Radar vehicles all over the province. They'd generally be GMC vans and they'd sit at strategic spots and get a pic of your plate as you went by, if you were speeding. These vans didn't even need to be manned. You'd then get a ticket in the mail. Same thing... if you weren't the driver, too bad. If it was a rental vehicle, the car rental co would send the ticket to you. This went on for years and it was pretty effective. Several years ago a female friend of mine got an "intersection cam" ticket in the mail...it included a pic clearly showing her car going thru the intersection on the red light. She had to pay it. I'm not positive about this but I think that if you don't pay these things, because we have govn't insurance here, when you go to renew your insurance, the fees owed have to be paid at that time. Personally I think these cams are a good thing and there should be more of them around here.
