  1. I was referring to air cooled versus liquid cooled engines in general, not necessarilly motorcycle engines. Point being, you refer to air cooled as "slightly refined 100 year old technology" .... yet I'd suggest liquid cooled has been around as long or longer. Having said that, and in reference to motorcycles, if air cooled has been around "for 100 years" (yes, I realize that could be an eggzageration) ... then obviously it is a tried and true technology ....
  2. and how long have liquid cooled engines been around? (generally speaking)
  3. I was the guy on the red bike ... Edit: (in my dreams LOL)
  4. Go to youtube and search for Victory or Harley burnouts and drag racing. here's a few ... I love this one.... Point being ... you will find tons of vids of burnouts and drag racing of bikes with belt drives. If those belts can stand up to that, then one should feel pretty confident they'll handle anything we "touring folk" can throw at them (besides rocks and sticks, etc LOL)
  5. Not in my 'Vision' ....
  6. DOH on me ... it's a 2014 .. added to my post.
  7. Thanks puc, appears the guy's asking price is very reasonable compared to what I've found with that search. Now th only problem is, ... where do I store it for the next 8 or 9 months while we're on our road trip????? ..... Bro-in-law has some space up north so waiting for response from him. Then again, I'd better sleep on this coz right now, it's impulse LOL Sure got my mojo workin tho.... lol
  8. Neighbor of ours is selling his 2014 Spyder RTS. What do y'all feel it's worth (if I wuz to buy it) ... (he does have an asking price of $18,500) Only has 4,000 kilomters on it. (pardon Nina's 'salute') LOL
  9. Of all the input that Yamaha received from owners to "give them what they asked for", one of the main things that was at the forefront was that no Venture owners were ever involved in a "tip-over" so the need for exposed crash guards just wasn't needed and that is why they hid them behind plastic shrouds......... not to mention requiring a place to attach highway pegs which the need for those has been eliminated by the larger floorboards..
  10. I should have said ... it "appears to have" engine/crash guards ...
  11. @Flyinfool My point simply was to show Karaboo, and others who've said the same thing, that it does have engine/crash guards.
  12. What are these then?
  13. You ROCK brother!! I was thinking much the same thoughts. Too many whiners and crybabies here ... they whined for the past four years coz there was no new Venture ... and now they got one and they can't turn off the whining. Y'all can keep yer antequated 4 cylinder, liquid cooled, top heavy elephant cassette players. Me, I got out of mine years ago and it's probably time I got out of here too. CYA
  14. Proof that 'water cooled' does not necessarily mean cool.
  15. hmmmmmm... I recall having to replace the pumpkin on my '85 due to "lack of maintenance" by the PO. The splines in the drive shaft had become so rusted they broke. There was a grease fitting on the tube but you could pump all the grease you wanted into there and it still didn't get into the splines. I bolded the word maintenance because every shaft drive bike requires the diff oil to be changed regularly and at least on the 1st and 2nd gen Ventures you also have to clean and re-grease the splines as well as the dampeners on a regular basis. Now what maintenance is required on a belt other than occasional adjustment which is a piece of cake???? (just being the devils advocate here)
  16. Interesting ... adjustable handlebars? Up or Down but that's about it. Also interesting but not about the bike is the "flip-flop" reference to capacities .... 144 LITRES of storage capacity and 6.55 GALLON fuel tank.
  17. My ex-mother-in-law (RIP) would never consider a used car because she figured they got traded in coz there was something wrong with them .... I could never convince her there are many other reason's similar to what you list.
  18. Why not? Have y'all lost sight of the meaning of the word and why Yamaha originally called the bike "Venture"?
  19. You must have missed that detail in their specs ... you can get an accessory bugsplat wiper that senses when there's bugsplat and automatically activates.
  20. Frame mounted fairing and 500+ more cc's to begin with might have some contribution to that.... and as we all know, looks can be deceiving ...
  21. You're so right about that! Practically every where one goes, what do you see most of? Harleys! From my perspective the new Venture has all the things I prefer. If they went with the V-max motor then it would be much heavier as well as top heavy which adversely affects low speed handling IMO. The only thing that would prevent me from buying one is if it had poor low speed handling. I doubt it would since it has a low center of gravity and low seat height. As for engine heat, ya, when it's above 85 degrees you notice it but primarily in stop and go traffic but at least with the Victory, once I removed the CATs and had it dyno'd, the heat wasn't all that bad. Once you're in temps hovering around 100+ it's hard to tell if the heat is from the engine, the pavement, or just the air. Just standing on a corner and it's friggin HOT! It will be interesting to read what new owners/riders have to say about "engine heat" ...
  22. In the case of the new Venture, note that the belt has guards on it to prevent that from happening.
  23. After reading the posts about the new venture and seeing so many stating they dislike belt drive, I'm curious to know what y'all think is wrong with them? And why do y'all think the shaft drive is better? Let's also hear from the PRO side of the fence too... (well at least this ain't an oil debate... )
  24. Folks mention Air cooled and equate that to engine heat and equate that to Victory, Indian, and Harley. Well I can't speak for the other two with any certainty but I can for the Victory. To set the records straight .... the heat was NOT from the ENGINE ... it comes from the Catalytic convertor which are in the head pipes which are right under the rider and passenger's foot boards. Get rid of the CATs and the only time you felt engine heat was either stopped or at slow speeds in 85+ degree weather. Even at that it wasn't all that bad. You will get that from any "exposed" engine, including the RSV.
  25. OMG!!!!! I think I see another bike in my future!
