Went to a comedy club last night ... near peed myself laffin .... Just did it again with this one!!

Responses to this should be quite interesting and maybe even comical. Anyhoo, wife and I went out for appy's and drinks last night prior to going to a comedy club. The place is a very popular restaurant/bar and unless you have a reservation on a Sat night, you're lucky to get in. I ordered (among other things) a Lettuce Wrap. Now, some of you might not know what that is so do a Google search on them. I had the "chicken" wrap ... they are quite good. To make a long story short, we got our entire meal paid for (except our drinks) by the manager due to something I found in the mix for the lettuce wrap. I'm not tellin just yet what that was but it has got to be the oddest, most unlikey "foreign" object I've ever seen or heard about being in somebody's restaurant meal. Not hair, not a bug, something totally unexpected (as if one could expect something LOL). So, tell us what your weirdest "thing" was and after we've had a few responses, I'll let you know what I found.

ummmmm... let's see ... gotta be a year or maybe more since last time you poked fun at me .... gawd I missed you! .... NOT!

so you're inferring that I have "issues" and I'm not a happy guy ????

Similar happened to me a few years back but the tractor had no trailer .... my fault tho as I was too close and in the middle. Lesson learned: make sure they can see you in their mirrors.

To answer your question, the whine (if the bike has it) will appear at a certain rpm (let's say, for sake of arguement... 2800 rpm) and disappear (again, for sake of arguement) around 3100 rpm. It is noticeable in 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears. On mine, when in 5th gear, at that rpm, it wasn't bothersome due to the speed. I found it more bothersome when in 3rd and 4th. Once again I will stress that... a) not all bikes have a whine loud enough to be bothersome; b) not all riders are bothered by the whine (depends on your own hearing); c) mine only bothered me SOMETIMES. I did not sell my RSV because of the whine. I simply wanted a more powerful bike for pulling our tent trailer. Had it not been for that ONE REASON, we'd still be riding the RSV. Do yourself a favour and go test ride the one you're interested in. If you find it whines and it bothers you, go test ride another. Quite frankly, you cannot go wrong with these bikes.

You know, I've been a computer instructor for many years, since 1987 to be specific. I've also been a student in classes where I thought I knew more than the instructor .... the bad parts of that was, I didn't pay attention, did the multi-tasking thing (opened my mouth, spoke some words, and made an arse of myself) and found my foot in my mouth a few times. Since then I learned to humble myself, never pre-judge something, to keep an open mind, and to remember that no matter how boring something might seem to be, to always try and learn something or barring that, to at least be entertained. One thing else I learned .... never try and "one-up" the instructor, especially in front of the class! LOL (and that's a lesson I've taught a few over the years myself LMAO)

A lot of folks who drive those vehicles have a completely misguided sense of confidence and for some reason think that because they are driving one, they are invincible. Anyone who has had a lot of experience with a 2-wheel, rear drive vehicle in snow and ice can easilly drive circles around most of those idjits in the winter. The absolute best 2 vehicles I've ever owned for snow/ice/bad winter road driving (and believe me, I've driven in some of the worst conditions and many times over) was an old Honda Civic (one of their 1st generation models) and a front wheel drive 1991 Mercury Villager van running Blizzak (siped) tires. In all my years of driving in our crappy winter driving conditions here in BC, Alberta, and Northern Ontario, I have found myself in the ditch only once ... and that was driving a 4x4 GMC Jimmy LOL Oh, I forgot, I did roll my first car due to winter roads .... but I was 17 and it was the 1st time I ever drove on snow LOL

Just curious then... what do you (or anyone else here from the US) suppose would be a reasonable US selling price (selling price, not asking price) for this particular 2001 RSV that Kevin is looking at? I think one of the reason's things such as motorcycles bring a higher dollar here is based on supply and demand. Sure a guy can go to the US and pick something up, oftentimes for less but when you factor in the cost associated to going there, checking it out, clearing it with R.I.V. / customs, and the exchange on the dollar .... it's often a whole lot less of a hassle just to pay a bit more and get it locally. As it is though, I have been watching some of the USED bike prices between Can and US for both the RSV's and Wings and frankly, they are all over the map and there really is no consistency when it comes to more expensive here versus less expensive in the US. What I do see is that some folks will advertise a high price but we rarely know what that item actually sold for. now since we are (or have) dropped the 1.6 cent penny, that is my $0.05 opinion.

New Fairing for 2008 RSTD
SilvrT replied to troutman's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Well let's see .... you spent $1200 for a fairing with a sound system but you still don't have a trunk. I just don't understand why anyone would go this route to save a measly $3800 and be without a CASSETTE DECK! -
Kevin has been looking at that one was well ... I posted it here the other day. That is one very nice bike but maybe out of Kevin's budget ???
-
Technically that is correct but we refer to it as "clutch basket whine" or "clutch whine" simply because the sound comes from the gear on the clutch basket meshing with the primary gear off the crank. (just felt the need to expand upon / clarify that)

I saw that one yesterday when I was looking. Looks like it's in great shape and the fact that it's a one-owner is a plus as you'll be able to get all the history on it. As for the mileage ... I'm neither here nor there on that. I bought my '85 Venture with 107,000 on it and my '87 had 97,000 ... sold them both at around 160,000 and they were still running strong. For that price, I'd be willing to take a serious look at it for sure. oh... I just remembered... I think I've seen that one advertised quite a while ago as I remember the pic of it in the garage with the Harley.

My '06 was a "whiner" ... hated it. Had the clutch basket swapped for an "I" basket ... helped some ... at least to a point that I could tolerate it most days ... other days it annoyed me .... became a mental challenge to disregard it. Great bike otherwise. So I bought this Wing ... and guess what? ..... it has a REAL ANNOYING WHINE ... but only when idling ... once rolling and rpm's are up, I don't hear it. Apparently it's the same with these Wings, some have it, some don't, and those that do, it varies in pitch from one bike to the other. Years ago I had an '85 Venture ... same whine issue... it would start right around 2900 rpm and go away just above 3100 rpm no matter what gear I was in. As others have said, if you're going to buy one, take it for a good road test first. If it's a whiner, you'll know it. It generally shows up in 3rd, 4th, and 5th right around the 3000 rpm mark ... at least with mine it did. The "technical" explanation for it (at least from my readings and understanding) is that the primary gear and clutch basket gear were not a "matched set" ... meaning that they weren't designed/developed/produced by the same mill. Each were produced based on a design spec to meet specific tolerances but not necessarilly "matched". (or something like that). I don't state this to discourage you from buying an RSV ... more so to arm you with information based on my own knowledge and experience. They are a fantastic motorcycle and when I look at pics of my '06, I feel these little twangs of emotion ... that little man inside my head saying "ya dumb arse... why'd ya go an sell it?"
