When I bought my Venture it was in West Virginia and I was in California. I contracted with JC Motors to bring it to me. Since we left on a 2 week cruise for Hawaii the next day, I wasn't concerned about getting it in 2 or 3 days. However, it took almost a month. I picked it up at their terminal in Irvine, Ca. I was told it would be shipped without draining the fuel tank. When I got there the bike was still covered and protected. The tank was dry and the battery was dead. Help from the employees was non existent. The impression I got was, its delivered, we are done. And the price? $738

Mileage? Who buys a vehicle just for the mileage it gets? We drive a used 1975 greyhound bus converted to a motorhome. The bus is powered by a Detroit Diesel 8v71 and an allison 740 automatic transmission. We also carry my 88 yvr on an electric lift mounted to the engine rails. Behind that we pull our Jeep Grand Cherokee. We started our journey in 1995 and have never looked back. Have I ever checked the mileage we get? Of course. It gets roughly, depending on terrain, wind, altitude, and my foot. About 9200 yards to the gallon! With a 180 gallon fuel tank and 4 dollars for a gallon of fuel we do not let it run too low because i simply hate walking out crying like a baby after paying the bill.

The food should be a little better than your average navy food chief. And there will not be any navy bean soup. What a disappointment. If anyone is into Harley T-shirts. There is a Harley T-shirt shop in Belize City but not Cozumel. We just got back from a similar cruise, but we started in Quebec City, around to Tampa to western Caribbean. During hurricane Sandy we hid out in Halifax. Had a great time, looking for our next cruise already.

I was lucky enough to be offered a Harley Davidson. Free. ( a 175 cc Model from the mid 70's ) I was told it would start but had no throttle. I took it home and started it. It started very easy but no throttle. Standing there watching it idle i noticed there was exhaust gas coming from every exhaust system joint but none from the exhaust pipe. after pulling the exhaust baffle out it had plenty of throttle. I poured carb cleaner into the baffle and nothing came out. I had to drill the carbon out, then it ran great. No, i no longer own it. I traded it for a Kawasaki h-2. 750 triple. It had a lot more throttle. No longer own it either. They were both fun bikes.

I agree the tampa bridge is a good one, but, has anyone out there been on the Astoria, Oregon bridge? It starts in Astoria with a 360 degree turn to gain altitude. You can look into homes built on the hillside in town. Then you keep climbing in order to be high enough for ships to pass under you. As you cross the center section you drive on steel grating. After crossing the main channel you drop to almost water level then 4 miles later you enter Washington state. It is one fantastic bridge.

Congratulations on another birthday. The more we get the more we learn. Now, my question. What would be the average age of the VR members? As for me, i will be 69 real soon, and i am a new member here, and just last December got the Venture i have wanted since first seeing them. A beautiful white 88 royale. It even has venture travel bags.

My wife and I love Hwy1 from Leggett San Fran. However, the last time we took it we had the venture with us, but it was strapped on the back of our motorhome. ( A converted Greyhound bus ) We also were towing our Jeep. Three times trying to complete turns we had to backup to make it. Our motorhome now has its first scrape mark on it , as well as the jeep. Guard rails are placed at the very edge of the road. No shoulder at all. Next time I would rather take just the Venture.

The Ortega Hwy in so. cal. is a greatride. It runs from Capistrano to Lake Elsinore with great sweeping turns, hairpins, good views, 2 bar/restaurants that favor bikes and bikers, and a couple campgrounds for those inclined. Try it you'll like it!

Welcome back to riding! I too am clean and sober. Always have been clean, never seeing the need to be high. Now the next question, how many reformed smokers are out there? I quit in 1984, do not miss them at all.

I understand forgetting to take pictures. We just got off a one week cruise on the California coast. We stopped in Santa Barbara, San Francisco, San Diego, and Ensenada. I just counted my pictures! 7!!! Postcards would make more sense.

Too bad you didn't make the doors 12 feet wide. If you have an rv of some kind it would be much easier to get it inside. Of course some people could use 12 feet to ride the bike in! I have installed rollup doors and they aren't too difficult IF you read the directions over and over again. GOOD LUCK

I would highly recommend Hwy 1 for a great ride. We did Hwy 1 from Fort Bragg, Ca. to San Francisco this year. The only problem, the bike was on the back of our bus. A converted Greyhound. And we were pulling our jeep. For those that have never been on Hwy 1, there isn't room for a bus on Hwy 1. Several times we had to backup in order to negotiate very very very tight turns. I also managed to introduce the bus and the Jeep to one of the guard rails. Be very careful and you will really enjoy the ride!!!!

Whats a lawn mower? I live in a converted Greyhound bus and carry my 1st gen on a rack. If the lawn gets too shaggy we move to another campground. However, if i were building a garage, it would be block for longevity and insulating qualities. Windows and doors can be added later if you wish. I would also build in a well ventilated pit for working under my car and a permanent raised platform for working on the bikes. Might as well build in a restroom too. That way the wife won't get upset when you wash off all that grease and oil. You also eliminate those pesky 5 minute interuptions when you are trying to get something done. Let us know how it goes. As long as we are just making suggestions, how about building in your air compressor and hard plumbing air lines. Of course if it gets too nice you may end up with too many visitors. Its up tp you!

For all you plane buffs, try the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola, Fl. We spent close to 7 hours there and I did not want to leave. No admission charge either.

Nice entry level bike. Windshield optional?

You talk about getting ripped off when using usd's in Mexico, you run the same risk using usd's in Canada. I speak from experience! Ripoff artists come in all nationalities. Just keep your eye's open.

Another thing you might think about is changing to a belt drive system. A company called Scoot Works makes conversion kits with no frame mods necessary. Find them at Scoot Works.com I put one on my Vulcan 800 and it works great. The only thing I noticed was a slightly higher gearing that made a little more throttle necessary on take off. Just imagine, no more grease slinging and it is quieter. Another thing, its chrome!

bb's are actually copper coated steel. Being inside a tire they should not rust. Might be easier to have your tires balanced.

How to search the forum

I recently saw some shirts advertised that had a first gen venture printed on the back with a (gasp) second gen on there as well. The front had Venture something embroidered on it. Now I can't find them. Does anyone know the link that will take me back to them? Please -
Iowa guy says he loves it when he can save some money. Why on earth then would you buy a motorcycle? They were designed to have money spent on them!

Sometimes the manual does nothing to clarify anything. Since it is printed in japlish you must be fluent in that language. I still have not figured out how to preset channels. I did pull the radio out yesterday as a means of "learning" more about the venture. What I found was about 1/2 cubic foot of what I think was the remains of someones carpet. I hope the mouse, rat, chipmunk, squirrel or whatever kind of vermin it was, was warm and comfortable. He's not welcome back, so he will have to find other accommodations. I do not think that is what meant when you say riding two up. Hope you figure out the radio thing soon.

does anyone know the difference between a dead skunk on the highway and a dead lawyer on the highway? the skid marks in front of the skunk.
