Rear Shock Adjustment
SaltyDawg replied to vette8494's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I believe the air in the rear shock is more for preload than anything. So depending on how far you want the bike so sit once both of you are on it. I doubt with your combined weights you would need more than 30lbs of air.- 23 replies

Switched power question
SaltyDawg replied to MrRadi8's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
It's actually not a cigarette lighter, it is an aux power port and no it does not cut out when you hit the starter. And that is what I am talking about. I currently run a Garmin Streetpilot 1, XM Roadie 2, and the relay for my passing lights off that circuit and have never had a problem with it. -
Switched power question
SaltyDawg replied to MrRadi8's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
You can tap into the HL wire, but I would advise against it. Even though they draw minimal power you are just adding places for the HL circuit to short out and that's not a good thing. You can use the Aux connector wires and just inline splice into it. -
Shifting Question
SaltyDawg replied to kantornado's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Check the pivot bolt that holds the HT shifter on. If it is loose you will have difficulty shifting to the higher gears. -
I had difficulty shifting my 99 RSV to the point of it wouldn't shift at all once and found the pivot bolt that holds the HT shifter on was almost completely out. Tightened it and have not had any trouble since. Others have said that their linkage not being lubed properly made shifting hard and sometimes prevented it from going in gear. Not sure if that helps or not. Good Luck

How do I know if I have a bad rear shock?
SaltyDawg replied to a topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
It all would depend on where the oil is coming from. If you can definitively determine that it is coming from the shock, the yes the shock is as good as gone. On the other hand, if the bike has too much oil in it the oil will blow out the crank case and can blow back on the shock. Look all around the back of the engine and see if there is oil there. If so, try and determine if what you see is motor oil blown back, it shouldn't be too hard to tell there will be oil in other places than just on the shock. -
I was told this was because the uric acid is stored in fat tissue and when you start taking Allopurinol it completely stops the production of uric acid and when levels get low enough in the blood stream, your body will pull the acid all at once from the fat tissue. Thus overloading your system again. If you stop, it once again builds up in your tissue and once you start it pulls it all out again. It's a vicious cycle.

I ride in the cold, like I said down in the teens, but YOU BE CRAZY!!! :rotf: I don't ride with snow or ice on the ground. Then again here in Eastern NC if either is on the ground the world comes to a stop anyway. LOL That picture looks very scary.

Anywhere from $630.00 to $1,000.00 depending on where you find it. Unfortunately for me, my wife has a motorcycle also and wants her half to buy chrome to go on her ride. So I am stuck with one or the other. If I buy the bubs then there is a little left over for something else. Maybe the Yamaha lower vents. Hmmmmm!!! Now my decisions are getting harder. -
Charging Problem - Opinions please
SaltyDawg replied to BradT's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
What is the temperature where the bike is at when you are taking these readings? I can't remember what temp the carb heaters come on, I think it's 65 and go off at 73. If the temp is below that or anywhere near it then you are not going to read 14V at the battery. To test that you would have to pull the fuse which is located inside the right lower shroud. In the winter on my digital battery meter I never see over 13.8 volts even traveling down the highway unless I turn off my passing lamps. Then it might get up to 14V. That's why I have pulled the fuse for the carb heaters. I see no reason to have them where I live. -
By all means give me the name. LOL I'm willing to try anything at this point. Thanks. I know about the tears part. I was fortunate to catch this bout early enough that I didn't do the normal damage and end up at that point. I have had it so bad that just blowing air across my foot would put me in agony. I get it in my ankle and heel. Oh how I long for the days of getting it in my big toe.

Allopurinol didn't work for me. Had the worst bout with it 2 weeks after taking the drug, it wouldn't clear up and the doctor took me off of it. As far as diet goes I don't eat any of the things they say causes gout, nor do I drink beer or alcohol.

Charging Problem - Opinions please
SaltyDawg replied to BradT's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Glad to hear you got it fixed, that's about right for the volts. Once the battery is completely charged then you will see the full voltage reading. My concern would be where the oil came from that got into the connector. Sounds like it could be being blown from the crank case, if that's the case the bike is being over filled on oil changes. -

If a new battery is put in and not charged properly it can have ill effects on the RSV. The charging system is not designed to recharge a depleted battery, but to maintain a batterys charge. Here is a PDF of the Charging System. Hope it helps. -

$374.98 shipped. Now I have to decide if Uncle Sam is going to buy me a Zumo 550 or the Bub's. Decisions....Decisions! -
Don't know if I could find them online, I haven't really checked yet, but the mc parts and apparel store my wife works at sells LED license bolts that shine onto the plate. I'll try and find them and post a link. They were $20.00 a pair at the store. When I first saw them I thought they shined straight back, but upon closer inspection I saw that they actually shined in towards the plate. At least with these you could use your own plate if you had one you like. Ok I found them. Well I don't think these are actually the ones at the store but they are similar. http://www.1tail.com/sa/p/Lite_N_Boltz_domed_head_license_plate_light_-_Satin_Finish_(pair).htm

You can also join a place like Photobucket for free and upload them there and then post a link on you thread. Photobucket is better if you have a lot of pictures, because you can upload a ton of pictures and you are not using up any of venturerider.org server space.

Just today I received a package from RideGear.com. I have to agree with your assessment, they are a BIG RIP OFF. Originally we ordered a pair of riding boots which by the way they said were in stock. Low and behold after getting no information from them after two weeks, they said the boots were on back order and they would ship them as soon as they got in. A month later and we were still waiting when they sent the wrong size boots. Not only were they the wrong size they were not even close. We ordered a size 12 and got a size 4. Of course we sent them back and wanted a refund but they claimed the boots were on closeout. Now if something is on closeout how come they were on back order and they had to wait on them to come in. So by claiming they were a closeout item they refused to refund our money and gave us store credit. As PO'ed as I was my wife talked me into going ahead and getting something from there. So after we spent several days trying to decide what we wanted, we called them and ordered the stuff, we waited for them to CONFIRM that the items were actually in stock and were assured they were and they would be shipped within 2 days. A week later we get another email that stated "ITEMS ON BACK ORDER" I called them and chewed up one side and down another and all of a sudden the stuff had already been shipped. It just arrived today and it's being shipped right back and those SOB's better refund my money, or I'm gonna take a road trip and exact my revenge.

I don't think so unless the passenger seat is mounted the same way as on a Venture. On the RSV the passenger seat has a tab that slips under a metal lip in the back and then there are 2 bolts that are put in from the front that holds it onto the bike. It's where these two bolts are that the Diamond R back rest attaches. They provide longer bolts.

I doubt there is a problem. I personally use Valvoline Gear oil and yeah you can hear a little noise back there but like you said with the radio on you don't hear it. That's how I get all noise problems to go away. PUMP UP THE VOLUME. lol If I let every weired sound these bikes make bother me I would have it in the shop all the time. If it gets louder or you feel vibration/grinding then I would start to worry.
