Yeah Craig we wanted to come up, but we were supposed to meet up with family in Myrtle Beach this coming weekend, and we couldn't afford both trips, but they ended up canceling out anyway. Hopefully next time. It would have been great. We have friends who live in Mechanicsburg and would like to have seen them also.

That's what I do, but it will come loose in a good rain storm. Nothing serious but just be aware that it will happen. Once it dries again it's solid.

Looks like you need to do some target practice. Sorry to hear about that, I imagine her cat will turn up in a day or two.

Obviously this can't be considered an OFFICIAL MEET AND EAT since I have yet to see a picture of Muffinman working on a motorcycle!!!:whistling: Seriously it looks like Krome Rose and I missed a great time. It's a good thing though, It sounds like RiderDuke might not have been able to handled two more. Glad everyone had a great time and got home safe.

BINGO!!! I would NEVER buy a bike without test driving it. If asked I would show my MC endorsement and Proof of Insurance. I have also given them my drivers license to hold until I get back. (If I got pulled over for doing something stupid having the license on my person wouldn't matter much anyway) If they refused to allow me to test ride it, then I figure they didn't really want to sell the bike in the first place. I almost didn't buy my first RSV because the dealership didn't allow test rides, well I walked only to be caught in the parking lot and allowed to test ride it. Imagine that, a dealership that doesn't allow test rides of their vehicles. The guy I bought my 2nd RSV from didn't know me from Adam. We met online and had several email conversations. I went and looked at the bike one night, a week later he told me to come take it for the weekend, I took it, and ended up keeping it and paying him about a month later when my check came in. Granted you can't expect anything like that to happen. The guy was a super great person and very trusting. Then again, us Marines have a special bond and 99.9% of us are true to each other and our motto. Still, without test riding the bike, I wouldn't have bought it. Period!!

Real nice. Looks pretty good.

Good to know, I sometimes smell the exhaust but I always assumed it was because of the airflow over the Clearview shield. Mostly smell it during the Winter when I have the Yamaha lowers set up for blocking the wind. When I open them up and allow the wind across the engine no more smell. BTW thanks for going back and closing out your original post. I know it took some time, but you found the problem and others of us now have someplace to look. Good job.

Hey Buddy you are awesome. This is something we definitely need. I was a bit disappointed when mine started cracking so soon after install. Glad you decided to do this for us. I'm going to PP your money for a set of the Green ones. Thanks.

Welcome to the site. As for the dreaded chirp. It bothers people in different ways. I have owned 2 99's and I can't say if they had/have the dreaded chirp. I don't let things like that bother me. These are big bikes with a lot of stuff on them, they make noise. All kinds of noise. Nothing I have heard alarms me and if there is a chirp or whine, well my radio has a volume knob and I can just "Pump up the Volume". The first thing I would check on the 99 or any RSV is the rear shock. Check to see if it has air in it, and if it will hold air. Check to see if there is evidence of an oil leak at the bottom of the shock. Both are signs that the shock is shot. Now this isn't a deal breaker, but you will end up shelling out anywhere from $350 - $700.00 for a new shock and another $150.00 for the install if you are not mechanically inclined. If the shock is shot, I suggest staying away from the stock yamaha shock and purchasing the more expensive Works Performance shock which are custom made for you and can be rebuilt for around $100.00. More up front in the beginning, but pays for itself in time. The Yamaha shock is woefully inadequate for this bike and blows out quite regularly. Check the front end for wobbling, while this isn't a big thing you should be aware of it. Usually it's a wobble at speeds of 35mph and can be caused by tire cupping or more likely the steering head bearing being loose. Both are easy to fix. I would also look at the seals on the front forks. Not usually a problem, but a 99 with low miles and 35k is relatively low miles, sometimes seals crack from not being used. Find out any and all mods that the seller/previous owner has done to it. Like changing the dogbones, shock, Jason mod, pipes, rejetted, clutch spring, stuff like that. It goes a long way when you start researching things you want to do and have know idea if the mods have already been done. Good Luck, Oh and by the way. That is the same color as my bike and in case you didn't know it. It's the FASTEST color they make. Oh yeah one more thing, listen for a clicking coming from the rear end as you slow down and come to a stop. It will be more prevalent on the left side. That is a sure sign that the rear splines need to be greased. Most if not all of us grease them every time we change the rear tire.

I try to check mine once a week, it's not practical for me to check them before each ride since I ride to work every day. I have noticed that the Commanders don't loose too much air over time. I doubt you have a bearing going out. I had over 80,000 miles on mine before I had to replace the front bearings. The rear are fine. Yeah don't scrape the floorboards until you feel really comfortable, I was just trying to get my message across. I try not to scrape them too often, but my meaning was to work the bike more in the corners so that you don't end up with the center of the rear tire flattened out. It makes the bike feel weird rolling into curves.

It's just a matter of time. Several times he wrecked but there was no accident. His rear tire spun out on him, he locked up the brakes and slid sideways. Me personally if I had seen him coming up behind me like that I would have had to open the door and teach him a lesson. Someone needs to snatch that fool up by the short hairs and beat him profusely about the head and shoulders.

Everyone has there preference in tires and a lot depends on how they ride. When I got my RSV it was used and had Avon Venom's on it with roughly 2,000 miles on them. I couldn't wait to get them off, in fact I hated them so much I ordered Commanders within 2 weeks of buying the bike. Others just love the Venoms, for me they don't feel comfortable in the corners, I have to work the bike to get it over. Not so with the Commanders, the bike is nimble and easy to roll into the corners. Again that's just my opinion. I am considering giving the Elite 3's a shot next time around. Not fully sold on the idea, but am giving it some thought.

I have only noticed noise in the corners when my pressures are low. There is plenty of tread on the sides and maybe that's what people are hearing. Keep the pressures right, scrape the floorboards in the curves and wear the tire evenly and there should be no noticeable noise.

Knock on wood I have not had any problems. Been running mine for over 2 years and 52,000 miles.

My question would be are you disappointed with the style or light output? The bulbs can be changed, in fact most of us have. I use a Sylvania Silverstar in mine. It's way brighter than the stock one.

My question is: Is it cost prohibitive? The way I go through tires to spend a lot to save it from a possible puncture isn't worth it.

When I was 18 I got pulled over (well I actually pulled over and waited) for doing 125 in a 15 in my 71 Charger. I had been drinking and was showing off to my girlfriend. The Trooper pulled in behind me, came up to the window saw I had a girl in the car and asked me to come sit in his car. Where he proceeded to show me a photo album full of crash victims due to drunk driving. He then told me "I could care less about you, it's that young lady you have in your car that I care about" I got the message and since he didn't want to do the paperwork dealing with a DWI he said "I'm going to write you a ticket for running a red light" I said, stupidly I might add. There are no red lights on this road. Duhhhhh!!!! He repeated it again and I again got the message. I can honestly say I feel I owe that officer my life, what he showed me and did for me scared me straight. My drinking and driving days were over and I don't push the speed limit more than 3 or 4 MPH.

If you are a big person I would shy away from downsizing the front tire. It makes a difference, but it's not really that much IMO. I never had problems with the low speed handling of the RSV, but I figured I would try out the smaller tire and to be honest it doesn't feel right to me. I have over 52,000 miles on this bike and 40,000 on my previous RSV so I have the experience, but going to the smaller tire gave me an uncomfortable feel in the corners at higher speeds and the tire tends to track the cracks a lot. It's not my steering head bearings either. They are nice and snug. It took me about 3,000 miles of riding before I felt comfortable with the smaller tire. I will go back to the original size on my next tire. BTW I usually put over 2,000 miles a month on it, so it didn't take long to get comfortable with it, but I still am not sold. Others experiences will vary. Like I said, if you are a big guy then you can handle the bike without problems, I imagine for smaller people it makes a ton of difference.
