  1. Appreciate it Gary. I figured i wasn't alone in this. The PO "fixed" this problem by putting a piece of electrical tape over the warning light. A little butcher Bob job & I'm too much of a stickler to deal with the tape. Andy
  2. Going to put the resistor to fix the battery warning light issue. I bought bothe the 1k & the 2.2K ohm. Which one should I try first? I'm trying to do as few steps as possible. Thanks Andy
  3. Since Working on my plastic welding skills, kind of got the itch to get back to fabricating. I have time on my hands since retiring a few years back & I decided to take a 10 week course on the operation of both oxy–fuel and electric welding systems, as well as the joining processes of SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, and plasma cutting. It's been a long time since I did any fabrication (35 years) & I still have my old Oxy torches & arc welder, now I guess I'll need to get my a tig, mig, & plasma torch. Andy
  4. Picked up a pair of 5 pin din cables on Ebay for $4 & they word great. Of course they are NOT right angle which will cause me a problem. I will either have to ger adapters OR try to reposition the radio/amp a bit. All in all, a pretty good day!
  5. Today was a good day! I received a few Items for the bike in the mail and I finally resolved my stuck reservoir screws issue thanks to many of the suggestions I received here. I sprayed them with deep creep & let them sit smacking them lightly with a hammer & philips screwdriver occasionally for a few days then I found the "Big Boy" the circa 1990 Bob Vila endorsed Craftman screw extractor. (you'd be amazed at how many tools you amass in 30 years of married life) The screws had no chance. They walked right out! I also want to thank Dingy for hooking me up with the stainless allen screws, they work like a charm, although the rear master cylinder was a PITA to get to & tighten. BTW I wonder if anyone else has this problem...On the Venture, when you drop a screw or anything small by the engine, where does it go? Are these bikes equipped with a black hole or is it just a void???? So far I lost an allen screw, a precision screwdriver, a screw extractor, & a piece of ABS tab from the right lower fairing...NEVER TO BE SEEN AGAIN! I figure one day I'll hit a pothole & 7 million pieces of lost stuff will fall out!
  6. I'd love toJeff but I'm up in NYC this weekend for New Years...Oh & the bike is apart now. BTW I checked out the lines & forund no weeps. I did move the bike yesterday without starting it and the smell started up again out of the airbox. It's starting to look like a stuck float! Hopefully seafoam will fix it when I put her back together.
  7. I'll give it a shot. It's better to tread lightly & with caution. If I can save this reservoir I'll have $300 more to put goodies into this bike. Andy
  8. In ones old age one learns to do it right...the 1st time. Something my 17 year old still can't grasp Let's see if I get lucky!
  9. You ever have one of those days when you KNOW it's going to get pricey? I got a junk master cyl to "practice drilling out & extracting the screws. Now mind you, the junk one's screws were stuck but looked better than mine. It ain't pretty. What a PITA! 1st I tried to drill the screw a bit & use the extractor...no good won't budge. so I drill off the head & remove the lid. No problem. I try to extract the screw with a vise grip. As Al Borlan would say..."I don't think so Tim" Ok I drill though the screw cleanly and I try to use the extractor again, I mean really what's left of the screw. "SNAP" goes the Craftsman extractor. (sigh) I redrill the hole & clean it out. It looks like I have to tap in the threads. I can only imagine the nightmare I will have on the one which is on my bike. This is the "Untouched" unit that I have to work on I think it's going to be one of those "buy the entire part new" days!
  10. Earl, Thanx for the pix & heads up. I love this bike. It's has all the power we need for cruising around. I actually bought it for my wife & I to ride together. I've always been a shade tree grease monkey. Restoring 60 & 70's cars mostly, although I did build my 72 CB500 into a chopper when I was 18 (so many years ago). My other bike is an 81 Honda CB750 which I brought back to life with only 23K miles on her. I get neurotic about details & sometimes go overboard with repairs This one seems easy enough since I am skinning her to do ABS repairs, I might as well inspect & replace as I go along if needed. (years ago I would have just replaced all the fuel, vacuum & vent lines w/o blinking). Anyhow since I am fairly certain the 14K mileage is accurate, one thing I am concentrating on is worn or deteriorated component parts. Tires are new (according to the coding on the sidewall) I ran a micrometer on the rotors & they were within specs, and the pads were good. Eventually I will replace the brake lines to stainless. Anyway, I've rambled on enough. Thanks again for all the insight, you guy are great! Andy
  11. Gary, Fortunately, I've been across the pond and learned many different terms for items in our language (a cigarette being the most confusing), so I knew what Greg was coming from but yeah....torch in the USA, by a gasoline tank....Bad!
  12. I'm partial to a .40 cal myself http://blackandgold.com/forums/images/smilies/icon23.gif
  13. Appreciate it Gary. I will LYK when they arrive Thanks Andy
  14. I'm not all that worried about it. I especially wanted an older bike that would be less desireable to thieves. I do have a strong chain as well as a wheel lock. I was just wondering if a bike alarm was worth the time & effort. I'm originally from NYC, (we tend to ignore alarms) Although a kill switch might not hurt.
  15. I think this may be the issue! Nothing, the only puddle is coming from my slave cyl which I just bought the rebuild kit for. The PO had the carbs rebuilt & synced just prior to the sale. ASSUMING it was done correctly I should be able to rule them out. I think you may have hit the nail on the head with you 1st suggestion since all I did was open the petcock from closed to on without starting the bike Andy
  16. Greg This is what I assume is the petcock
  17. Ok I'm going to tangent this problem which came up in my other thread http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showpost.php?p=645718&postcount=23 The gas smell went away after 24 hours. I did not restart the bike. I reopened the petcock and the smell resurfaced within 20 min. Nothing is weeping or leaking, yet there the smell of gas is strongest right at the petcock. Anybody encounter this before? I want to avoid pulling the tank if possble, but if the lines need replacing so be it.
  18. Since I'm tearing down I think now will be the best time to add on things to the bike. It will make for a cleaner install. I was considering putting an alarm system on my Venture, although she will always be garaged. I was considering the the concerns during ride ins & such. What security systems do you have on your 1st gen & what features should I consider having, if any? Are they worth it? Thanks for your input
  19. The gas smell went away after 24 hours. I thought I had cured it but no. Today I had to move the bike so I started it outside & let it warm up. Once I got it back inside the gas stink resurfaced. So I have narrowed it down to a stuck float, I smell gas from the air cleaner inlet (battery cover is off). The only other thing I did before the smell dissipated was shut off the petcock. To rule any issues there I will reopen the petcock once the smell goes away to see if it resurfaces without starting the bike. In the end I'm hoping seafoam will do the trick!
  20. Michael, you sound like me. I have safety ties on my camera & my GPS. I've never had an issue but it only takes one time! (I always have nightmares of losing one & instinctively trying to save it & losing control) Andy
  21. I was basically planning on running them through a dremel with a buffer attachment using polishing rouge. The finished result would make the aluminum appear to look like chrome. Then I would just repaint the black ridges. As I start refinishing I will post pix. I'm also going to post pix of my plastic welding the cracks in the fairing as well as the broken ABS tabs. Andy
  22. So if I bought the intercom cables for my 84 from a wrecked Venture I should only use 83 to 85? or am I good for ALL the Venture Royale? I see a lot of Royal Star Cables, are they the same?
  23. Thanks. After 4 days of interaction, documentation & research on this forum I have to say the membership fee is a bargain. What impresses me the most is the members. No matter how ridiculous the question, member here don't make you feel stupid for asking it. I've already scheduled a outlook reminder to join before my trial expires!
  24. I use magic jack on a pc that I don't use. It has internet access but it just runs the magic jack. The big problem with MJ is that you cant have too many phones connected to the line. Also if you have older phones...or God forbid an old bell ringer phone, nothing will ring!
