  1. Well for now it takes care of the main deal... The wreak in the garage! I'll keep running Seafoam in the bike for a few more tanks. From what I understand, the previous owners had the carbs rebuilt & the diaphragms replaced, but you know the old adage, "if you didn't do it yourself, it may not really have been done". I have a complete carb bank from the parts bike that I will be rebuilding myself. Next time there will be no doubt.
  2. Sorry KIC just like an alien encounter story, it hasn't happend tilll you post some photos! Now the FUN begins...RIDING!
  3. Just an update. I found the source of the smell: The right rear carb lower boot between the carb & the engine was damp. I sprayed a whole can of carb cleaner on the carbs. Every time I would run the bike I could NOW see the lower boot would gurgle at the clamp & weep down the boot. Hence the gas smell. Once that evaporated the smell would dissipate. Wiped it down, tightened the clamp & went for a ride. Parked the bike, closed the garage door & FINALLY no more heavy gas smell!
  4. REALLY??? I would not have expected that. You would think 5th would be overdrive. I'll give that a shot around town (I actually would prefer it there as get outta the way gear) No overflow at all. I pulled all 4 overflow lines & made sure they were clear. I also clipped the fuel line 3/4" back to get a nice seal. My carbs were rebuilt by the P.O. & synced by Muffinman but I figured cleaner can't hurt. I sprayed a whole can of carb cleaner in, on & around the carbs. They were working before but if not the sliders are definitely moving now. After cleaning I did notice one thing (which has made me happy) The bottom boot between the engine & the right rear carb seemed to be loose. I say seemed because I saw a slight weeping if gas on the side of the boot while running. I loosened the clamp cleaned it all up, made sure the clamp was positioned correctly & tightened the clamp down. No more weep. I took the bike for a 1/2 hour ride, came home & closed the garage door. After 45 minute I checked on her & although the garage stinks from all the carb cleaner & junk I used, it is not that overpowering "I think the water heater will ignite the gas fumes" smell. Now I'm off to clean the garage. I think I finally fixed the smell, let's see what the mileage does!
  5. Dave, I've got a whole can of carb cleaner ready for the job today. I have been running seafoam for the last 2 tankfuls to clean stuff out. I also suspect something might be out of whack as the bike wreaks of gas when I park her in the garage after a ride. Within a few hours (and opening up the garage door to vent) the gas smell subsides. I haven't found a leak yet Since I have to replace my gas filter, I figure I will also replace the fuel lines from the petcock through to the carb since they ARE OEM. BTW does anyone know if I HAVE to use a Yamaha filter or will any generic auto filter fit? Hopefully, a good cleaning, new fuel line & filter will resolve the MPG & gas smell!
  6. Makes sense, so the gauge is more of a guide than a fact. Good so the red light DOES come on when the bike is low on fuel. At least I know that safegard is in place.
  7. I thought the LED gauge was wacky. It seems to drop slowly at 1st then real fast to 2 bars. I feel it's best to treat it like my Honda 750 & find out what my range is. If I can get at least 150 miles before I hit reserve I'm happy. Based on what you guys are saying that should be no problem. The last thing I want is to run out of gas on a bike that ain't easy to push
  8. Right now most of my driving has been below 50 mph. I haven't done an exact calculation, but like I said I have gone through 1/2 a tank in less than 75 miles. So at best I would say I'm getting under 30 mpg?
  9. The previous owner had the carbs were synced by Muffinman last summer. She runs great but I feel she is eating too much gas. Does anyone have a write up of what I would need to do & what I would need to have on hand (equipment wise) other than a screwdriver to decrease the feul intake? Would the carbs need to be synced again if I do?
  10. I'm trying to ascertain EXACTLY what the range of my bike is. I feel I am getting lousey MPG since I've gone 79 miles & the gauge is dancing between 1/2 & the bar below it. So I put the petcock in the on position to see how long I can run (leaving me the reserve so I'm not stranded). So when I hit the level where I need to switch to reserve position on the petcock, what will my main LCD gas gauge show? No bars? One bar? What about the red warning light will that turn on when IN reserve? What should I consider the normal range of the 1st Gen in (average) miles? Thank for the input.
  11. EXCELLENT, I found them for $3 bucks each, unfortunately they have a $7 shipping fee but whatever.... I looked at the grills but opted against it. I actually like the contrast better without the grills. I'm also afraid that if I overload it with chrome, I'll look like "Superfly" driving down the road Thanks for the help!
  12. http://www.aftermarketcyclepartsnation.com/Drag-Specialties-RECTANGULAR-TWIN-MARKER-LIGHTS-detail.htm?productId=7724779&catalogId=&searchProducts=2040-0299 Now that I have the rear light bar on the bike I was replacing the bulbs & found the one of the sidemarker crystals has stripped screws so I can't replace that bulb yet. Of course my OCD is driving me nuts that I have a side marker out (even though I don't see it while driving). I want to pick up an extra crystal (this one is also scratched) before I try to extract the screw. I have nightmares of slipping & cracking the lens while using the screw extractor. So Does anyone know who made this light bar & what should I use for keywords on Ebay when looking for a spare. ( I assume they are no longer available). I think I may have found them...Anyone else bought these? http://www.aftermarketcyclepartsnation.com/Drag-Specialties-RECTANGULAR-TWIN-MARKER-LIGHTS-detail.htm?productId=7724779&catalogId=&searchProducts=2040-0299
  13. Jose, I'm from Jersey & I felt the same way especially rush hour on the Parkway...until I moved to southern Virginia. These people here make driving in NY/NJ/PA like driving with the most courteous, polite & SAFEST driver in the world!
  14. I like the top ones. But maybe I'll hook those up to a relay off the horn switch.
  15. Is the combined 110w a severe drain on the charging system?
  16. Yeah my standard answer when I was asked "Is this your son?" was always: "That's what my wife tells me!"

  18. I was at Walmart today picking up plastic buckles to replace the ones on the trunk straps, and I came across these great driving lights for the Venture. They are all chrome teardrops for under $20 bucks...& they come with the wiring, fuse, & switch! http://www.walmart.com/ip/Driving-Light-Kit/16680058 http://www.etrailer.com/merchant2/graphics/00000001/pics/Q/H/QH-87CD_1000.jpg
  19. Spent the morning stripping down the parts bike. I'm down to the frame, the engine, both wheels & 1 caliper. It's amazing how light the Gen 1 is when you take off all the bulk. She feels like a 500cc bike!
  20. I know my 84 has Mikuni Carbs. Is there a series, model, or part number for them? I'm trying to locate which rebuild kit to get and secondly (and most importantly) some sort of instruction sheet on how to rebuild. I have seen something on Mikuni SBN seres but I can't tell from the pix if this is what my 84 has.
  21. Hey Condor, I'll see your multiple Craigslist scam & raise you indonesian listings. I googled the VIN https://www.google.com/#q=1fte337074200474&hl=en&safe=off&prmd=imvns&filter=0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&fp=11abbd181fcfb93c&biw=1280&bih=617 Dan Definitlely a scam, If they won't/can't/don't show the vehicle) a cash buyer...it doesn't exist! 22. Yep I have an old Craftsman floorjack with an 8' diameter lift plate (I think it's a 4 ton) And ya couldn't find a pix of that set up? BTW Randy, I was in your backyard last weekend checking the area out. Wife loves the area. Looks like we're a go for a 2013 move!

  24. Will do, I'll probable document it either with pix or on a video & post it to Freebird for the site. Having a parts bike has it's advantages
  25. Very cool. Seems simple enough, easier than my inline 4 750 Now to build a cradle crate for it! Thanks Gary.
