  1. Ok so on this tankful's mileage seems to have improved a bit (we'll see whan I fill up) So far I've gone 101 miles and I have 2 bars left. Last tank I was flashing the red light at the 100 mile mark. (I'm using Condor's suggestion & running in 4th around town using 5th only for the highway) Now with 2 bars left, I should at least get another 50 miles more before the red light flashes, a bit more if I wait until the red is solid. Next tank will have ABSOLUTELY no Seafoam in it. I know Seafoam does reduce the MPG's & I dumped a 1/2 a can in this tankful.
  2. Jay, I had the same thought about getting the original headsets since my parts bike had everything elsa I needed in it. After thinking about it, I am now going for a bluetooth unit. My reasoning is although I can't get the bike stereo through it, I will be able to answer my cell, & hear the directions from my Garmin GPS as well as communicating with the wife. The additional benefit of Bluetooth units (aside from no wires) is that when riding in groups you can pair other riders headsets as well. Now I just have the find the right units for my helmets
  3. I know exactly what you mean. Although I am no stranger to scraped knuckles (In younger days I restored 60 muscle cars for fun) Sometimes things are beyond your scope. I do agree that dealership usually have exorbitant labor charges. Unless my car is under warranty, they NEVER see the inside of a dealership again! Finding a good mechanic is definitely a treasure. Although I have never met Jeff (Muffinman) I can attest to his excellent abilities with a Mk1. The previous owner of my 84 visited Jeff & had the carbs synced. All I can say is, this bike runs like a dream. Plenty of power & no problems. (Thanks Jeff...you did REAL good!)
  4. There are some things that may be beyond my ability or desire to do, for example any engine rebuilding, carb rebuilding or diagnostics of unfindables. Those are the things I would outsource to the dealer...IF the cost is worth it. I may be lazy, but I'm not insane...yet.
  5. What I found owning 2 30 year old bikes, you can't find a dealer to work on anything older than 2000. For anyone in Hampton Roads Virginia area Sunrise Cycle in Norfolk will work on them. Well only on the off season (Sept to February). http://www.sunrisecycle.com/ Today I did my progressives & I had to go out & get fork oil. I asked the parts Mgr a question about how to do something & he walked me into the service area to talk to a tech. The tech not only answered my question but went through the entire procedure with me. (All I bought was fork oil) That's when I asked him if they worked on old bikes, expecting a "no" answer. It's good to find a dealer willing to work on any year make of what they sell!
  6. OMG KIC, you were right, these progressive are UNREAL! I slapped them in & went for a ride. The bike is responsive, nimble (for it's size) and most of all I don't feel that apprehension I felt with the old springs. Definitely a great upgrade!
  7. I'm thinking that the bike may be running rich. I'll run a fuw more tanks of Seafoam & then see how she does.
  8. Well whatever it was stinking up the carbs...is GONE. I again sprayed carb cleaner down the carb throats until she was puffing white smoke out the tail. I dumped 1/2 can of Seafoam in the full tank, then I went to the Yamaha dealer fro fork oil. Drove a total of 70 miles on the highway at 70mph. By the time I got back, I put the bike back in the garage. I checked on her a 1/2 later an no gas smell. I guess there was a stuck float. Driving around Norfolk, where the cement roads are not the greatest, I realize how much I really needed these springs. All I heard was "clunk clunk clunk" Now to install the Progressives I got from Skydoc17!
  9. Well the overflows have been ok since the day I ran dry BUT now the bike seems to be stinking after a ride. I'm sure it's related to the what ever obstruction caused the overflow. I'm sure a float is stuck. I have run seafoam in the tank before. I know you can soak the carbs by running a gas/seafoam mix. Since I'm going to be replacing the gas filter I figure I would run a mix in a jar through the pump into the carbs. a 50/50 miix I have heard works, has anyone tried using less gas & more seafoam?? I gotta get this fixed once & for all!
  10. hey Kic, I just have 1 more job to do. (famous last words) I broke drown & picked up the Progressive. My front end occasionally clunks when I stop quickly so my neurosis kicked in. A big part of the decision to move the install up was due to your praise of Earl & the setup you got from him. I think Skydoc owes you some advertising royalties
  11. I just wanted to thank the Ventureriders for all of your help in bringing out the jem in the ratty old bike I picked up Christmas eve. Without your knowledge & help finding parts, there would have been NO WAY I could have pulled this off in just over 2 months. - Thanks again!
  12. Gary I had a long standing battle with gasoline stink I finally tracked it down to one of the boots beetween the carb bottom & the engine. The boot was loose & gas would gurgle slightly. Just enough to stick out the garage so badly that I was worried the fumes would be ignited by the gas water heater. I tightened down the boot an the smell ended! Just a place to look. I feel your pain - Good Luck.

  14. Is there an alternative to the OEM Yamaha gas filter 1FK-24560-10 That can be used in the stock holder? They have less expensive filters at Autozone & advanced Auto (like the ones I buy for my beetle), but does anyone know what application would fit the holder? http://www.bikergarage101.com/media/00/a20791f12fec63c7847cbc_m.JPG Also what size diameter inlets are they 5/16 (ok 8 mm)?
  15. So while NOT on reserve position, the flashing red light begand at about 100 miles. I ran it to 130 befor it ran out & I had to flip to the reserve position. I filled the tank to the bottom of the neck it was 4.648 gallons. 133 miles/4.648 gallons = 28.6MPG This is local driving only, mostly under 50mph (suburbia). So... would you guys say that this mpg would be about right? I am hoping that interstate driving is at least 35mpg.
  16. Mike & Dave you guys cursed me I have run her in the driveway & around with little bags tied to the overflows & they are dry. I did check & the tubes are clear of obstructions. I got as far as 130 miles before she sputtered & I had to switch her over to reserve. Then the fun began One of the overflows started pissing like a racehorse! I could smell it as I rode. Maybe this was a good thing. I took out that precision calibration tool, my handy dandy shade tree mechanics instrument (a hammer) & gave that carb a few taps & she immediately stopped leaking. Now 130 miles seems low, although I do not know the range of the reserve tank (& do not want to find out 1st hand). Since I have a complete extra carb bank from the parts bike I will rebuild that. Can anyone point me to a good source for a rebuild kit & what part number etc I should refer to? What to they usually go for?
  17. KIC what size preload spacer did you use 3/4"? Do you have any air pressure in the front? I'm debating whether to do them this year. I get a clunk if I'm braking & I hit a bump. The bike runs well but the clunk irritates me.
  18. Well so far I have 120 miles on the counter & the red light if fluctuation between flashing red & solid red. I'm not on reserve so if I run out of gas I can flip it to reserve. I'll post my miles when I flip it over to reserve
  19. Ken, this sight has been the best $12 I have EVER spent! The 2nd Gen starter will be next winter's project but I was going with 4 gauge wire. I will also install front progressives. To monitor my charging system I use a real simple tool. It just plugs into the accessory port. It monitors battery condition & charging system. Picked it up at Walmart. Here'a a pix of it attached to my CB750

Remember the side covers have a slight curve to them so if you are going to make them removable you would have to make them big enough to go under the black fiined part. 2 screws there should hold the opposite side. Also, since yours would be removable & be attached over the hole opposed to inside the hole, I would use no thicker that 1/8 material nso it can be flexable. Tools needed a band saw or a dremel with a cutoff wheel & a bench grinder to fine tine the shape. Good Luck!

  23. It's raining today...not much to do so I decided to take care of an "inconvenience". The engine on this bike is a lef burner. Oh sure it's nice & toasty if you ride in the winter but I'm sure in summer no hair will grow on my legs. Since it seems to be virtually impossible to fine covers for the MKI I decided to fabricate my own. I used 1/4" ABS and plastic welded to openings.
