What are you thinking when breaking in your new engine?
DarkLeftArm replied to a topic in General Tech Talk
The "drive it like you stole it" method is good advice. Trouble is, at least with automotive engines with flat tappet cams, is the cam break-in. Cam manufacturers want you to use their high zinc content break in lube, and upon initial startup run the engine at 2000 to 2500 rpm for 20 to 30 minutes. That is always nerve racking for me. Everything about the install has to be perfect, and then to worry about the piston rings seating... -
My girlfriend used to live very remote up in Northern Minnesota, and she had an antenna called a "yagi"?? . She said it worked very well but it was getting hard to find phones with the required jack to attach the wire. Google yagi. supposed to work great. Bert

Luckily, both Susan & I RODE away without even a scratch. The bike... well... not so much. My pride... well... you know. VERY steep hill, very sharp hairpin turn, and I was negligent enough or arrogant enough to attempt it in 3rd gear. Right at the apex of the turn, the bike lugged, shuddered, and stalled. The roadbed was very steep to our right, so the bike pitched us off like ragdolls. we were tossed clear into some very soft loose gravel, and our full riding gear paid for itself in a nanosecond. Long story longer, the bike got skinned up pretty bad. All the plastic on the right side got deep scratches. No cracks, though. Took it to the dealership this am for an insurance estimate, and they don't actually FIX anything. they just replace it. What I really want to do is take the check from the insurance, and fix it myself, if they'll go with that. Funny thing is, I was just getting ready to spring for a new F4 tall & wide windshield. Have a good reason to toss the old one now. Nice, big greasy slab of humble pie for me. I have been riding for only 19 months, logging about 17,000 miles along the way, so I think I am fortunate to get off this easy.

Now THERE'S an idea! I like it. Let's go with that.

Solar Panel Top Up.
DarkLeftArm replied to Old Miner's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I like that idea. I'll be looking into a Harbor Freight solar panel. Big camping trips in the future. -
Just finished installing this stainless steel rack my girlfriend found on ebay. $45 bucks and some fasteners and junk I had laying around bought us a serviceable rack. This is a low budge bike from the git-go, so I'm just sticking to my theme. Thing is, due to a mixup, we ended up with 2 of these racks, so I figured if anybody else could use it, if you want to pay shipping, I'd happily give it to you. Who needs a very inexpensive generic looking luggage rack? heh heh heh

I used a cover like that on our Roadie at work in the parking lot for a whole year. That was put on and off every day, and sat in the AZ sun. I'd pay a lot more than a penny for another if I needed one. It cost about $30 at Cycle gear.

Mmmm. Nogales! We ride down there on the occasional evening for good Mexican food at a place on Mariposa road called Esquisite. Real good and real cheap. Also a steak house on Loma street in Nogales I have heard was excellent called Las Vegas. Have a safe ride. Bert

We can help out, way down here in AZ.

Am I right in thinking that most of the fears of a 1 wheel trailer lie in the fact that there is a possibility of too much tongue weight? Most 2 wheel trailers have the weight centered over the axle. Why does the wheel on a 1 wheel rig have to be to the extreme rear? Could it be designed with the wheel closer to the front of the trailer? Towards the center of the load? I think that would raise the center of gravity some, but it might be worth it to relieve some of the weight on the hitch. I think that even 1/3 of the total trailer weight is a lot for a mc hitch. Help me out here, my brain is starting to hurt. Thank you.

Never really looked, but my opinion is that there is NO other forum like this. Your 'wing friend could probably find more info here about his bike than elsewhere.

I want to mount on our '07 RSV, and for the life of me, I can't find the thread where this mod is addressed. I'm pretty sure it is simple, but that's about all I remember. Anybody else know about this? Thanks. Bert

Not a pilot, but I would just book the flight & go. You can wait there for the call same as wait at home.

As a truck driver, what I see is an suv passing everybody. No surprise. I think there was too much speed for the conditions, and some negligent driving.

definitely interested, like the rest, depending on dates. Sounds like a great idea.

F4Customs Windshield
DarkLeftArm replied to TDunc's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
We are thinking about getting one of these shields. Not so much for me, but for my passenger. With the stock windshield, I am pretty much in the calm air bubble, but Susan gets slapped around pretty bad by the wind. We were thinking maybe a wider/taller version would enlarge the "bubble" to include her. She gets tired of the noise from buffeting, and it is colder in the wind. Any thoughts or impressions from the back seat yet? -
Best part of getting old... Sometimes the old roads look brand new. Everyday is an adventure...

Auxiliary brake light wiring
DarkLeftArm replied to DarkLeftArm's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Flyinfool, you ARE the man. Your little almost free wiring gadget works perfect. Thanks again. -
Looks like a streamliner on the salt. Think we could put a V-Max motor in it?

Can you compare the E3s to the 404s? I'd like to hear your first impression.

We got this bike in late December, and got it ready to ride by Jan.1. Got it with 28 miles, now it has 3500 miles. So far I have changed engine oil 3 times. The first was when we got it, second at 700 miles, then at 3000 to Shell T6 full synthetic. At 3K I also went to shell synthetic gear lube out back. It seems to me that even before the switch to synthetic oils, I could feel the Venture loosen up. I think I actually felt it "break in". At first it felt kind of tight, and after I revved it, the rpms would drop back too soon. Now it feels like the sky's the limit with engine speed. Has anyone else noticed this "loosening up"? What a great feeling. Man, this thing flies.

50mph Crosswinds. How do you ride? fast? slow? not at all
DarkLeftArm replied to deepforkriver's topic in Watering Hole
The RSV is way better in wind than our Roadstar. In high winds, I am more vigilant to correct, but try to remain loose, and let the steering do its job. It is pretty hard to muscle it out against a high crosswind or driving by a tanker at 80. Seems like the bike will find it's own angle if you let it.
