  1. Mechanic, high school shops teacher and friend relayed story on how he "upgraded" lights on his Jetta TDI. Enjoyed truly superior lighting performance until both connectors melted off! Can't tell you which lights he used but obviously you need to be careful! Canadian Venture
  2. Same problem with mine and took panel off and put a screwdriver in the universal and sure enough it was loos and had play in it. G Luck!
  3. I put new tires on for summer and found that as soon as bike was not perfectly vertical that I got a drive line howl that would not go away until I straitened the bike up or ended up going straight after a corner. It didn't matter how mild the corner was the noise was there. I assumed the tires. Not! Brother had same brand on his 1200 BMR Putting the bike on the center stand and starting it and putting it in gear, I found that there is considerable play in the u joint..Putting a long screwdriver in there and prying it I found the play. Does the engine have to be removed to change that out? I see these offered on ebay but with gear that goes into the motor/transmission attached to the universal. What is easiest?
  4. Bought 87 VR last year and had a tow bar. Clutch slipped a lot. Did an oil change not much better. Then remembered what dad(mechainc) had taught me, use Rislone with your oil. After a couple of quick changes, no more that 2k, a lot of it went away! You substitute it for 20% of your oil change. But it still slips a bit. For the diesel engine oil, he told me that there is a lot more of "cleaning" action than car oil and now that someone in this post has mentioned that I will be trying that next summer for sure.
  5. http://www.royaldistributing.com has HID kits compete with ballast and a true hi/low kit pt#01-002003 for $229.99 as quoted in their 2010 spring /fall catalogue. Comes in a set of 2. Have been wanting to try but don't need 2! Oh! They are from Canada b8ut I am sure they will take your money anyway!
  6. Well maybe a 1/4 effort. I had already changed my bulbs to red for a different look but it clashed with the green, red and yellow that were part of the original colour scheme. These look really cool!
  7. Is there another source for diaphragms beside ebay? They want $330.! When I got my 87 last yr I started having problems after about a week. Shop removed gas tank and, as it had lots of rust in it(tank is steel!) they put in a bunch of screws, bolts and whatever and, rinse and repeat! 3 & 4 times! They said the amount of crap they cleaned out was amazing! $600 bucks later and did not get 3 days out of it! They had not cleaned the lines to the carb from the tank nor did they switch out the fuel filter! Dorks! Plus on ride home, bike on trailer, they had forgotten to put rubber hold down on side fairing! Was flapping in the wind on trailer! And the story continued. As there was a leaking valve cover gasket I decide to shampoo the engine. Got it nice and clean, wouldn't start. Messed around, flushed carbs w/cleaner to no avail. Brought it to another shop(had told other one that I would not let them tune up my electric trolling motor) they got a engine control unit from Yamaha in Toronto(they quoted me $1000!) but was a broken lead to the control unit, therefore no spark. I wanted a set of summer riding gloves but they would not throw in, bill was $550, nor would they give me a deal on $39 gloves! I know that they pay the techs only $15/17/hr! Will be using this forum a lot to do my own work!
  8. Thanks for info. Will have a second look to reassess. What I was thinking of installing was the OEM shock with its easy adjustability for changing loads and fine tuning at your finger tips. How reliable and long lived were the originals? Were they rebuildable and is it worth the effort?
  9. Have an 87 VR w/progressive rear shock that the previous owner installed to handle tow. No need 4 tow, removed it. Shock must be removed from bike with swingarm to do any adjusting. can't reach valve to check 4 pressure as valve faces to wards front of bike at exhaust heat shields, and has not dampening adjustment. Can shocks be rebuilt? Seen some on ebay and would purchase and have buddy rebuild it as he does snow machine and motocross bike shocks. Thanks.
  10. Tanx for info and will try and dbug this winter. Am in search for a manual and see lots of ads w/manual on cd. Which one is best/better? Oh! Found drive line play in universal at exit of motor. Does motor have to be out to replace this? Also: some one installed a "Progressive" shock on it to handle load of trailer, as it came w/a trailer hitch. Any adjustment seems possible only after I remove the whole assembly to crank down the setting on the shock for a heavier load. Would like to reinstall original shock as it has adjustment for load and dampening and I have removed hitch, if she wants to load that much on bike, she can follow me in motor home! Trade a good shock for a trailer hitch anyone?
  11. And its not hello you are welcome! 1987 venture royale, 126,000 miles. I put 12,000 miles the summer before with grin always plastered to face! Beautiful ride, love the cruise control and radio. Wanting to raise my idle speed this summer, I located what seemed the "general screw" after turning the throttle that would do this on the carbs. I upped the idle speed and to my horror the motor started to knock. I backed the screw to what I thought was the original position but the knock is still there and has stayed with me the rest of the summer. My mileage went for a dump big time, down from 175 miles/tank to 145/tank. The knock does not seem to be "location specific" ie.: one piston/left/right side. I can remember tuning cars (dad was a mechanic) in the seventies with the first emission cars where turning the distributor to set timing, you could induce knock. Have I inadvertently done this and how do I proceed to get rid of this? Tanx!
