Mine just started that scream too today in the cold and at higher speeds. Thought it was the fan motor at first, then realized it was the speedo. Pulled the cable and finished the ride.. time to lube the bearings..

Went for a combination of a CHRISTmas Eve and new to me bike shake down ride with some friends today. Left at 8:30 and 28.2 degrees outside. Found out…screw the dog, chaps are man’s best friend. The funny thing (or is it just reality) that out of 10 promises to ride, 7 showed up. 1 had to work a half of day and couldn’t get out of it. The only other two who didn’t show up “because it was too cold” were the 2 Harley riders. Three Ventures were present, my 89, an 85 and we even let a 2nd Gen 2001 ride with us…Tis the season you know… My 89 had a few minor issues. One was an incredible squeal would occur at higher speeds and colder temps. Happened on Friday morning when I left the house at 32 degrees and had to turn back and switch to the Tahoe. Later that day I rode it for 30+ miles around town with no issues. This morning it was like a police siren. Had figured it was the electric fan motor going. After analyzing it at the higher speeds I realized it was my speedometer cable. Pulled over and removed it and finished the ride quietly. Got that puppy up to 90 mph in one area ( had my GPS) and the bike felt better than my old K1200LT ever did. Never felt comfortable riding this stretch of curvy highway on the K1200LT, but the Venture was smooth and comfortable. Looking forward to tearing the front forks and Tupperware apart next week to fix the forks and oil leak and add 12-volt outlets to the fairing. Just waiting for my progressive springs to arrive….

Took the bike out today to run some errands. On my way home I had to stop at COSTCO to pick up a few things for CHRISTmas Eve dinner. Traffic sucked as everybody was turning left into the parking lot. Went past COSTCO to make a u-turn back into the lot. A young male (18-22ish) was in a small red car in front of me. I could tell he was on his cell phone, I was ticked as I wanted him to concentrate on making his u-turn so I could make mine. It was then that I saw a guy in a wheel chair coming down the sidewalk, crossing the entrances of a couple of business on that side. I had to wonder where he was coming from, as there was nothing to the east of where he was coming from. You see, this guy had one arm, and one good leg. He was pushing with his right leg, while pushing/spinning the rear wheel with his right arm. He was working VERY hard at each push/spin. I watched how much impact some gravel on the wheelchair ramp had as he went up the 8% wheelchair ramp slope. I think I was just in awe on how hard this guy was working to get somewhere. I kept wondering where he was coming from and how far he had already gone. The kid in the red car finally made his u-turn. About time ! Then it was my turn. As I turned I saw the red car turn into a business parking lot. Next thing I know, the kid had jumped out and walked up to the wheelchair guy. A brief conversation had the young man pushing the wheelchair up the road as I passed. I pulled into COSTCO. As I ran inside I kept thinking about what I had just witnessed. That kid committed to pushing that wheelchair.. How far ? A couple of blocks ? A mile ? I ran through COSTCO grabbing my stuff while thinking about that kid pushing the wheelchair. It was then when I decided that I wanted to get out of there ASAP. I wanted to see if I could either push the next mile, give the kid a ride back to his car, or at least shake his hand. I got in line and kept thinking about what I had seen. I only had three small things to buy. The ladies in front of me turned to me and insisted that I go ahead of them. ( 2nd nice gesture I had seen in the last 15 minutes. ) I checked out and ran to my bike. I rode my motorcycle up a mile to the west, turned around and then to the south. Couldn’t find either of them. Don’t know where they both went. Finally went back to where the car was parked and couldn’t find that either. All I know two things now; There is a mom and dad somewhere that should be very proud of their son, and that the next time I want to be the guy who does it, not the one who just thinks about it.

Yepper...for you guys... I get to ride year round out here in the wild west. Of course I will try my best not to rub it in or anything...Like today..when I ride across town in clear skies and 50ish +/- weather...You see, we keep that frozen ice crap in the freezer where it belongs....

Nope...smarter than that too... ....I've stayed at a Holiday Inn....
-
Sorry...even if you had audio, video and a signed confession I NEVER take the blame.....

Thanks..yes Earl has been very helpful and mentioned the plates. After soul searching decided that the wife wouldn't accept them as a CHRISTmas present, and the Victoria's Secret was a better, and much healthier, choice for me to make.

Are there any special tools needed for the 1st Gen front fork seals ?
-
ROOKIE..??? ME ? I have yet began to blow up this forum with my many needy questions. Rode the bike for 40 miles in town today running errands ( and making show off stops). I do have a few questions to start: 1) OIL.... I have heard that it is better to use diesel oil. Is this true ? If so what brand type/weight etc ? 2) Front fork seals... Is there any special tools needed ? I have done my KLR650 seals before and had to make some special tools for it. 3) What is the preferred tire pressure for these puppies ? 4) Where is the best/cheapest place to get progressive springs for the front ? 5) Any special recommended spark plugs ? I'll just start with those and let the list grow from there....

Well....finally got to ride the bike. After my wife ripped off our house's front water spicket this morning causing me to complete plumbing repairs in the cold dark morning, I had to run to Ace Hardware...you know the place with the helpful hardware man.. anyways, rode the bike there. Since I was there, I picked up a can of electrical contact cleaner and dielectric grease. Also decided to stop and get gas next door at the Circle K since the gas gauge didn't seem to be working. Why the details ? Like you care ? Well....the electrical cleaner immediately fixed my sticky starter button and cleaned my cruise control switches and horn button..man..they all feel nice now. AND... getting gas fixed my gas guage. You see I guess when there is NO gas in the bike the gas gauge doesn't show anything on the dash. Put 4.8 gallons in that puppy and BOOM...the gas guage was reading that there was gas in the bike. Easiest fix yet. Put a couple of new bulbs in the rear driving light bar. She fires right up and purrs. Looks like the front fork seals and steering head bearing might be my only real concern.

89 Venture - Mileage life span
KIC replied to KIC's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Just thought I would post a few of the picts of the bike. I posted these in another thread in the Watering Hole that I started after I "lost" this thread right after posting it. I thought this thread didn't upload. Anyways, I appreciate all the info and support on buying the bike. I am excited to start my new Venture in life.. -
ahh..OK...so next question ...How do I know if I have A "C" Bike..and if so I presume there is a thread on how to Decalifornicate the bike ?
-
Can anybody tell me what the difference between a XVZ13DW and a XVZ13DWC is ? Basically what does the C stand for ?
-
Karl, Keep focused. Look forward. People care. Merry CHRISTmas. It isn't much, but I would only spend it on the bike anyways and I think this is a much better deal. Bill
