Yea...the kind of family you deny knowledge of and you cross the street to avoid.

There was a recent post showing how to plastic weld ABS plastic using a soldering iron, copper wire, and wire ties to fix that stuff. I tried a little of it last week end and it worked pretty well and was easy. Find the link to the U Tube video.

I like the cable wiring section with the pictures of three cable end color codes ...the rest of that stuff is a foreign language to me....

I was told that I had 13 days after tearing it apart to fix it and still be ahead of any 2nd Gens that might catch up . Gotta watch out for that tortoise and the hare issue.

I was at Radio Shack to get resistors for the battery light by-pass and the salesman showed me a smarter than me phone app called ELECTRODROID. This app covers way more than I will ever understand. But it's pretty cool.

Front Fork Separation..

I had to remove the forks for other reasons/repairs/maintenance. I will try the impact wrench, but the bolt seems to be turning already, just not loosening. -

If you are asking about confusion.... Got it ! -
My daughter is currently going through the VA evaluation for TBI and PTSD. She was blown up in Afghanistan 2 years ago. EOD said it was 200 lbs of explosives and if they hadn't swerved at the last minute, they would not have made it. Her MRAP was blown up into the air and down into a crater made by the explosion. She also had a 200 lb gunner fall on top of her. She was an MP with Airborne. Earned many awards including her Combat Action Badge and Purple Heart. She spent 6 weeks in Bagram Medical. Her @$$hole 1st Sgt made her go back on patrol the day after she was released. She finished her deployment with all the symptoms of TBI and PTSD, anxiety, frustration, anger fear. The Army pretty much didn't do much about it. She spent 2 more months after Green Ramp on base patrol when they finally did a second CAT Scan/MRI and found she still had excessive brain swelling. She went on profile including to the point of the Army revoking her driving privileges. She got married after returning and then pregnant. The Army gave her the choice of deploying after the baby was born, or getting out. She chose the get out option. Anyway, the Army Physcologist tried to say she had a learning disability from birth. SHe had 2 years of college, worked as a bank teller, graduated from boot camp and Military Police Acadamy and served her deployment, both uninjured and then injured and some police patrol work. She did/does not have a learning disability from prior to the injury. The Army suspended her medical until her separation from the Army because they wanted the VA to take over the medical. I just last week submitted a letter outlining the changes/issues with my beautiful Lil Hero and the impact the IED has made on her. We will see how the VA handles this from now on....

So I got the forks off and the springs removed. I cannot figure out the removal of the 10mm hex head bolt in the bottom of the forks. I can get it to turn, but not loosen. The manual talks about some special tool, but I don't see any mention in the instructions I am following. Help ??? How do I remove those bolts ????

So I continued taking things apart. It is amazing how the parts are all interconnected. To take this part off you need to loosened and remove that part..which requires a different part moved/removed which requires this or that wire bundle to be loosened..etc..etc..etc.. I removed the whole fork assembly and triple tree assembly. The upper triple tree bearings were dried solid. No movement. A 10 minute soak in mineral spirits returned the bearings to functioning condition. The lower bearings were still moving freely. This should make the steering a whole lot smoother. Unfortunately, time was short and the bike was left disassembled until I return from my TDY next week.

My life is filled with "shoulda, coulda, woulda's". And after a 1/4 bottle of Shout and a load consisting of 1 pants, 1 shirt.... I think I squeeked out of that one... Yea... with the front wheel off and the forks off the ground... I didn't think about that air issue.... Now for more fun in the oily garage...

So... I started on the bike. But not without a few snaggles. I really hate the initial taking apart of a running bike...BUT...things need to be done. First of all it was supposed to be my 48+ hours bike weekend. With the wifey gone, I was going to start on the bike around 5pm Friday and just work through the whole weekend undistracted. Yea...that went well...NOT ! First I get a call at 3pm which results in a flight to Las Vegas at 8pm then driving back at 9am arriving home at 4pm. I get to start on the bike at 5pm. It was going slow as I dismantled the fairing and related pieces. As I took each piece off I would wash it, shine it , repair it etc. Disassembled the speedo to repair the cold morning squeal and replace the high beam bulb. All went well with that. plastic welded the bottom of the windshield that I found cracked... we'll see if that holds. Had one .." Uh Oh" moment and one disaster moment..or actually 10 minutes. The Uh Oh moment was when I was removing the front tire and needed to jack the bike higher to get the tire form under the front fender. Yea...that worked well.... I jacked up the bike got the tire out and then realized that I need a large screw driver to lower the hydrolic jack back down. I am now trying to balance the beast on the jack as I maneuver around the front to try to reach for a screw driver. The bike is wavering back and forth like a drunk monkey. :no-no-no:Okay..got that done. By now I am "hitting a wall from exhaustion resulting from my over night Vegas burner.. I decided That I would drain the oil out of the front forks over night and start fresh in the morning. I damn well didn't know that that fork oil was 1) under so much pressure and 2) able to spray so doggone far and wide !! I now have fork oil all over one of my other bikes, all my tools that were laid out, the new parts, the nice shirt that I shouldn't have been wearing and a few other places I probably have not seen yet. Anyway... I washed the oil soaked clothes, showered my oil soaked self and cleaned up most of the oil soaked garage, drained the rest of the fork oil and bored you with teh details...onward to tomorrow !

Having lived through having my daughter in combat over in Afghanistan for the longest year of my life, I can only imagine what the family is going through. When my daughter was injured when her MRAP hit an IED and we didn't hear anything for 3 days, it seemed like forever. This soldier's parents need prayers and support. Thanks for posting.

Keep at it Dan ! Your motivation almost....and I mean almost has me ready to start working out.... it's just that physical exercise part of it that is such a turn off...

I bought mine from Skydoc_17 and I am installing them this weekend. They came fast, well packaged and with all the help he has contributed to me and this site, well recommended. You might find a little cheaper elsewhere .... But where else are you going to get the tech support on the product and installation than from here and from Skydoc_17?

Another Quick question. Just got home from an 8-day TDY and have the opportunity to tear the bike apart this weekend before I leave Sunday night for another 6 days. I hope to finish a lot of the list and not leave the bike to torn apart while I am gone. (It's a memory thing ) Who are you and why am I typing this ??? I want to clean the forks inside and it has been recommended to put either Seafoam or Dextron ATF in it for a little while. QUESTION: How far from the top (measurement) should it be filled to ? I know how much to put in once I rebuild them, But I want to fill (add to) both sides before I tear them apart. Thanks guys. I hope a lot of you brainiacs are going to be sitting in front of the 'puter this weekend as I am sure I will be begging for quick answers as I pull my 48 hour/wifey gone repair weekend. Bill
