About a year and a half ago my wife and I were driving through Dallas/Ft Worth on the way to welcome my Lil Hero Daughter back from the sand pit. About 10 PM and we were all of a sudden passed by 10-15 crotch rockets blasting from out of nowhere. We were doing 70mph and they passed up like we were standing still. I knew where there is one, there are more. I held my line and my lane and sure enough another 10 or so came flying by at different intervals at a very high speed. I was just waiting for somebody in a cage to freak and change lanes unexpectedly. Luckily no one did, but man I thought for sure something would happen. A lot of the crotch rocket crowd is just too dang crazy. That is why I bought the 87 for my son. I told him he could ride with me, not race like crazy on a ride.

So after being tipped off by DarkLeftArm about a 1st Gen carcass in a motorcycle junkyard behind a local shop, I finally stopped in to see what was there. There were actually 2, but one is very gone. The other is stripped, but has some good parts left. The shop seems very reasonable on selling parts off of them. It seems to be a MK1, 83 to 85 vintage. The guy at the shop said he would look for paperwork to confirm actual year. I’m thinking of seeing what I could buy the one carcass for and then strip it down. Wish it was a MK2. Here are some pictures. If anybody needs anything off of these, let me know. Thinking maybe the hitch sale would pay for the carcass and then i could 'Pay Forward the other parts and stuff.

So I test rode the 06 today. There are a few minor issues, but it ran well. No whine in clutch area or rear final drive area, and since there wasn’t a 2nd Gen owner on it, no whining from the front seat area. It does have some scratches from falling over. They said they dropped it moving it around the business. And they do look like stationary fall scratches including a broken mirror. The repairs are.. new left mirror or set of matching mirrors, a crack on the lower fairing ( I can plastic weld that ) seats recovered, and the speaker grill area on the rear left is broken. So, the guy buying it has a painter that can either repaint or touch up the scratched areas. Painter said he would repaint the bike for $150.00 labor If we take off the Tupperware, (owes the buyer a favor) , Mirrors - not a big deal set for $50.00 or less. , Seats recovered ?? I’m thinking buying a good used set and selling the existing to someone who needs a set for custom seat upholstering. The most expensive item appears to be the rear speaker grill . Anybody know how much that might cost ? The only bling on the bike is that it has a hitch, but I doubt he would ever tow anything. Looks like the most he would pay is $4200 out the door. Trying for $4,000 out the door.

DQ is having a 2 for 1 sale or something like that ..just might have to do that. Rode the 06 today. Didn't hear any whine...but then I am not the owner.. Rode nice..right up to the moment the left rear view mirror fell off. Had to turn around to pick that puppy up. Overall a good bike if he can get it for the $4000.00. Found the prior owner's name in the paperwork and trying to contact him to learn about the bike. We'll see what happens...

Going to look at it this morning. Looks like they had it originally listed for $6,999.00 but want to move it so he offered $4,000.00. Thanks for the input. He currently rides a Vulcan 800 and just sold a 85 Voyager that he only had for a couple of months. wants to combine the sale of both bikes into a larger cruiser. Sounds like there are 3 whines associated with a 2nd Gen. The clutch basket whine The rear end whine And the rider whine for being slower than a 1st Gen. I won't have to listen to any of them since he will always be behind me.. If he gets this one, that means our Tucson group will be tied at 3 1st Gens, 3 2nd Gens... wait Gene has an 84 parts bike... 4 to 3 .... we still rule !!!

you be a funny guy....

Sounds like I'll do the same to my 89. I took the top of the air filter box off the 89 today and after putting it back on, the bike seems to run smoother...wonder if there was a leak or something. I don't think it was my imagination.

I have read about the problems with the 06/07 2nd Gens and the basket whine. I know that friends don't let friends buy 2nd Gens ( hey just couldn't resist ) But my friend wants me to go look at an 06 with 53K miles. Supposedly they want $4,000.00 for it. The price seems good, even a little low. What should I look for on an 06 ? What speed is the whine audible ? Anything else ? Probably no records as it is being sold at a local pawn shop and they have had it for a while. If I get the VIN, wouldn't the dealer be able to pull records ?

The 87 has that mod which is where the one smaller hose I found connects to. My 89 has the piece on it, but the hose looks like it is reversed and the PO put a small filter on that hose. The hose does look like it is crimped or pinched since it is pushed over to the side. If this isn't breathing correctly , will it affect the running of the 89 ? I also need to check the air box of the 89 and make sure it has the 2 nipples blocked off. Any benefit to having this separate breather ?

Hang in there..that last vicariously lived workout just about killed me..

OK..Latest "Quick Question(s)". Been working on the 87. It had sat for 2 years with gas. Cleaned the carbs with a heavy Seafoam/Gas 50/50 mixture fed straight into carbs from fuel pump. Let them sit 24 hours then did a little flushing and new gas with some Seafoam added. Finally got it to start. Have ran it, let it idle, revved the RPMS enough and to the point that the wifey came out to say "enough". I was able to ride it around the block Saturday, although I found out it didn't have rear brakes..another story, a different set of questions. Back to the carbs: SYMPTOMS: It runs better after being warmed up. But it still backfires, and the weirdest part is the throttle creeps up the RPMs. Saturday while letting it idle, I ran into the house to grab something and heard the sucker "screamin" ..ran out to find it at 8000 RPMs. When idleing, the throttle tends to "bounce" a little without being touched. Sometimes you have to hold it back to keep the idle. The engine's return from being revved is slow. Still has some backfire. Seems to idle the best...when it isn't creeping up. So today I drained the bowls and flushed from the drain tube with carb cleaner. Then decided to spray some from the top. That is when I found the air cleaner was totally loose. None of the clamps were tightened. It just popped off in my hand. I believe I have read here that there are some issues with the air cleaner having to be perfect, no mods to it. Would the clamps not being tight affect the running of the engine ? I also found one of the slides sticking so I cleaned that with cleaner and it seems better. ( Actually cleaned them all.) Found the previous owner had not used a clamp on the gas line so that was fixed and one of the top hoses ( breather hose, overflow hose ?) from the top of the rear right carb was disconnected. Where do those top carb hoses connect to, or are they just venting out under the gas tank ? I also found a disconnect hose from the crank case breather that has a clamp on it, but was disconnected. (picture below. The set up on the breather is different than what is on my 89. So, Where does that breather line go ? Should there be more to the crank case breather than it has ? OK...think I answered my own question. I looked in the trunk as the previous owner did put a few parts in there. Found the breather hose. Then looked at the bottom of the air cleaner and saw a 2nd "nipple' that looks like the mysterious hose would go to. Looks to be a PITA to connect all the hoses and tighten/connect the 4 carb intake boots. Any tips as to hooking that all back up ? It looks like the PO had trouble with the boots pushing into the air box and he glued them to the box. New question: IF..that little breather hose (?) is not connected to the airbox, should the "nipple" be plugged off ? My 89 has its own air breather set up on it and I am wondering if it is blocked off or not..will have to check.. Why is there the big hose and the little hose going to basically the same place ?

So my 87 is coming along. Still running poorly from sitting 2 years with old gas. Fixed the clutch yesterday so I thought a quick spin around the block was in order. Was great up to the point of needing brakes ...no rear brakes ...ANYWAYS ...sitting here talking to my son about the 87 and what color he would want it. SO...how about posting a picture of the different colors and paint schemes so he can have a visual to help in his decision .

AND..the pictures are ..where...?????????? PICTS..... WE WANT PICTS !!!!

Wonder why your cap is 1-inch tall, when mine is 3/4 inch. Anybody know why they would be different sizes ?

Speedo Calibration???
KIC replied to 86venturejay's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My 89 looks like it has a problem. It was pretty accurate when I first got it, but shortly there after developed the "Speedo Squeal" I disconnected it until I could take it apart and grease it. Now when I hit around 80 it reads 120. The upper speeds are when it goes crazy. I plan on taking my GPS out with it and figure out the variation. Anybody else experienced this ? It looks like the squeal damaged the ability to read accurately. ??? -
Not true... I have heard that once a second Gen owner rides a first Gen, there is an incredible "unbearable" whine of regret for having a 2nd Gen and not a 1st Gen.... Just sayin'........

My friend's 83 has this on his front fender. His bike was originally part of a collection and has a lot of fancy "bling" on it. The eyes light up when the lights are on:

Nice looking bike. Glad you are enjoying the ride. I love that blue color scheme. Ride safe ! -
I used 3/4-inch preload at 190# - 6'1". It is a little stiff....I might try 1/2-inch preload.
