Prayers and best wishes for your grandson. My 23 yr old son was is a crotch rocket daredevil, and knows it. I used to hold my breath when i knew he was out riding with his friends. He doesn't have a crotch rocket right now so I got him to ride my 89 VR. He actually liked it. So I got him an 87 VR and other than wanting to put louder pipes on it, he seems very interested. He had my bike for a weekend and showed up at a crime scene I was working at with a big smile and wondering when we would finish his bike. Kids just think they are invincible on those rocket sleds. Maybe your grandson will look towards a more "comfortable" bike now. Best wishes.

You know, the fun is the same on all the forums. On our ADVRider forum, the "jokes" are between the KTM's ( Keep The Money comin') and the KLR's ( Keep Locktight Ready) . The bantering goes back and forth. I first rode my friend's 2nd Gen that got me looking at Ventures. Then another friend bought a 1st Gen and I liked to "retro" aspect of it. That was before I found out how much faster and better a 1st Gen was. All in good fun. People need to lighten up. Of course we could just change course and leave the 2nd Gens and Harley's alone and just pick on the Gold/Silverwing guys.... Hmmm..... 1st Gen - 2nd Gens - Harleys - Goldwings - Now.... go out and ride it like ya stole it !

HELP! cant get brakes bled!

Sorry about the clowning...not familiar with the wires. I have been following this thread since I am having a similar issue with my 87 front/rear brakes. Sounds like you are getting the info from the "smarter than I" ones. -

Got back in town after 7 straight days of 14 - 15 hour days, mostly sitting in a vehicle. Couldn't wait to get on the bike to run errands. Went to my P.O.Box and there was my CarbTune...woohooo:cool10: Then I paid for the new diaphragms that I won for the 87 on Ebay. So those were the ups...riding, Carbutune and diaphragms... Now the "Down" was that when I pulled into the parking lot of one of my stops, I put the kickstand down and leaned over the bike. The problem was that when I lifted my foot up after putting down the kickstand, my foot caught the kickstand on the way up. That left the beast tilting to the left without the kickstand.... nap time. The next "Up" was that I got to try the backwards lifting technique I have seen on the video. Grabbed the handle bars and the rear side handle and lifted that puppy right up. The Down and Up happened in less than 15 seconds ! Now...back to reports and work....

Relay for driving lights
KIC replied to Billkroeger's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Several weeks ago we tried to wire a relay into my friend's son's Honda cruiser. He wanted his driving lights to come on automatically when the engine was running and not stay on if the key was on, but engine was off. The only wires we found that did that was the wires coming from the stater to the battery. The problem was his motor has that "Harley" type slow "thud..thud..thud" idle and the relay would click on and off repeatedly until he gave it some gas. worked fine at "speed" but figured he would burn out the relay in no time at idle at lights etc. I am thinking that the stater/charging spin on a 1st Gen is faster and smoother so it might work on ours. The idea behind this type of hook up was not to drain the battery while sitting with the key on, engine off, and not having to install a separate switch. Any other thoughts... ?? -

Are you trying to undermine my conspiracy theory ???????? -
A friends son had similar problem with his Honda cruiser. He tried a lot of different fixes. He ended up changing the triple tree bearings and tightening the neck nut to the proper torque and it solved his problem. Just a thought...

They say restore the bike, but really, after that long in salt water, what part of teh bike is worth keeping/fixing restoring, Basically they will have to build the bike from scratch with new parts. It would be interesting to know what parts they keep on it though....

I read this and thought it was worth passing on... you never know when that little action on your part has a big impact on somebody else. A sweet lesson on patience. A NYC Taxi driver wrote: I arrived at the address and honked the horn. After waiting a few minutes I honked again. Since this was going to be my last ride of my shift I thought about just driving away, but instead I put the car in park and walked up to the door and knocked.. 'Just a minute', answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor. After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 90's stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940's movie. By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware. 'Would you carry my bag out to the car?' she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb. She kept thanking me for my kindness. 'It's nothing', I told her.. 'I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother to be treated.' 'Oh, you're such a good boy, she said. When we got in the cab, she gave me an address and then asked, 'Could you drive through downtown?' 'It's not the shortest way,' I answered quickly.. 'Oh, I don't mind,' she said. 'I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to a hospice. I looked in the rear-view mirror. Her eyes were glistening. 'I don't have any family left,' she continued in a soft voice..'The doctor says I don't have very long.' I quietly reached over and shut off the meter. 'What route would you like me to take?' I asked. For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she'd ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing. As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, 'I'm tired.Let's go now'. We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico. Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move. They must have been expecting her. I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair. 'How much do I owe you?' She asked, reaching into her purse. 'Nothing,' I said 'You have to make a living,' she answered. 'There are other passengers,' I responded. Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug.She held onto me tightly. 'You gave an old woman a little moment of joy,' she said. 'Thank you.' I squeezed her hand, and then walked into the dim morning light.. Behind me, a door shut.It was the sound of the closing of a life.. I didn't pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly lost in thought. For the rest of that day,I could hardly talk. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver,or one who was impatient to end his shift? What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away? On a quick review, I don't think that I have done anything more important in my life. We're conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments. But great moments often catch us unaware-beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one.

1st Gen front end "rebound"
KIC replied to Trader's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I felt my 89 had a little of what you described. I had recently had the forks off and greased the bearings. Although, I believe I had tightened the steering neck nut correctly. The bike felt good while riding, but on real slow turns like backing out of garage and down the driveway, I could feel a "looseness" wiggle. A couple of weeks ago I took the triple tree apart and re-tightened the nut. It needed just a little extra umph ..and it now feels GREAT !. If you haven't greased your bearings, try that and tighten correctly. -
1st Gens are used to hearing whinin coming from the front seat of 2nd Gens ..... it's just par for the course. sorry I could not resist........
