Welcome to the site. WARNING..these bikes are contagious ! and so is this dang site... I started looking into the 1st Gen Venture after riding my friend's 2nd Gen, and another friend getting a 1st Gen. I was out of town and asked this site for a few tips on an 89 VR that I was going to look at in that town. I received the list below. I looked at two 1st Gens and used the list. One guy was so impressed he asked me to email him the list in case he kept his brother's bike, he would know what to look at fixing. 9 months later I have two 1st Gens and two parts bikes. Even sold my beautiful, loved and trusted KLR650 to buy the 2nd 1st Gen so my son could ride with me. Now another friend is searching for a good clean 1st Gen to pick up. Good luck ! Steering Head Detented
KIC replied to GaryZ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I just had a thought... when I put my forks back into my 89, when I slid the forks up, a wire or cable got caught in the bottom behind the forks. I only found it by accident. The wire was tight and I actually had a little problem getting the forks up around it. Had I not found it by accident, it would not have let my forks slide totally up and seat correctly. Just a thought to double check down below and make sure nothing is keeping the bottom from seating correctly. -

Do you have an aftermarket front fork Brace ? After I put my Progressives in, my front felt a little loose and slightly non-responsive turning from left to right. After my heavy duty front fork brace it feels nice and tight. Just a thought... -
The problem is what you consider a "dealer". In our area all the dealers have been bought out by the large superstores like RideNow, Or as they are known around here as SlimeNow, They claim to be a dealer but don;t carry very many parts, do crappy service, sell every model of bike. So technically they are a "dealer" , but not like the old days where a dealer knows their product, specialized in one or two brands and helped their customers. The superstores now a days just fleece the newbees and jack the prices all around.

BE VERY CAREFUL ..cover all your plastic (ABS) with a thick rag. When you pump the clutch lever it will spit it out at you. I use a hand vacuum pump I got at Harbor Freight. I used the vacuum pump to remove the fluid in the reservoir then used it to bleed all the fluid through the lines from the bottom bleeder. The fluid will destroy your plastic..so cover it all !

I just had similar problems last week. I changed all the fluid while bleeding the crap out of it . Worked like a charm .

I believe you have an 86..I have 2 84 parts bikes with those on them. We would have to figure out if they are the same 84 and an 86. I'm sure the answer will pop up here... And wouldn't the front right and the rear left be the same ? -
Here you go. Try printing this out to make one complete document. Good luck ! Ride safe !

Here are some prior posts and instructions on the Venture Carb. I have another document that is too large, but will try to post in pieces. Carb Cleaning 101.doc

Hand him an ice cream cone and he would be oblivious to who is driving.....

So I'm wondering why so many Venture lovers/riders are on the East Coast and so very few in the west.. We gotta work on that ...

Hi all; Wondering if any members are close to Imperial Beach/San Diego CA that could run by and check out a 1st Gen ? I have a friend that is interested in one and though I have volunteered to drive over with my trailer to pick it up with him, it would be good if somebody familiar with 1st Gens could just see if it is what the owner/seller claims. So..???

Not running well

I will tell you how I soaked my 87 after it was parked with gas in it for 2 years by the previous owner. I disconnected the gas line to the fuel pump. added a line to the fuel pump and using a small funnel I poured a very rich SeaFoam/gas mixture into it and let the gas pump, pump it in. But first I drained the bowls using the connected drain lines. Then I drained it again to make sure the Seafoam mixture was in. Let it set for 48 hours. It will run like crap when you first (finally) get it started but a fresher gas/SeaFoam mixture from the gas tank will help. Good luck. -

I have heard really hard to find, and very expensive when you do. I hit mine by accident with a power sprayer and blew the right side out. Good luck on finding some.- 3 replies

WELCOME ! At 42K it is just getting broken in. Spend some time on the forum here and you can find out a lot about your bike. The search function works best this way : Top right in the lower blue line click on "Search" Drop down to the bottom where it states " Google Search" Click in the little circle that has the www. venture address. Type in a few cue words on your search and click the "Google Search" button. You will get a lot of info on your questions. If you can't find the answers...just ask here and you will get answers, comments, jokes, harassment, your thread hijacked by at least one if not more.... and you will love every minute of it... Then you pay your $12.00 to join and enjoy every minute and penny of it.. -
After having to easy-out one of the screws..... I flushed the fluid and added new fluid and it now shifts like a dream... Good Deal ! Thanks guys. :happy65:

Rear Cylinders dead.
KIC replied to mechanic1's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
it's the little things that turn out to be the problem. Just luck as to how you find the problem, and in what order the "problem" is on the list. I usually find it is the last thing I would have checked to fix the "problem" . I am chasing a carb problem with my 87. New diaphragms, plugs, clean the jets etc.. found out the previous owner hooked the cruise control vacuum line to the #2 cylinder port and left the vacuum line disconnected. not of this affects or changes the running of the bike. It still runs the same crappy way. I'm sure it will turn out to be some stupid little thing... Glad you got it running.
