LEGEND OF THE RIDE BELL Many years ago, on a cold December night, an old greybeard biker was returning from a trip to Mexico with his saddlebags filled with toys and other assorted trinkets for the kids at a group home near where he worked. As he rode along that night, he thought about how lucky he had been in life, having a loving riding partner that understood his need to roam the highways and about his trusty old bike that hadn't let him down once in the many years they had shared the road together. About 50 miles north of the border, in the high desert, lurked a small group of notorious little critters known as Road Gremlins. You know, the ones who always leave little obstacles like one shoe, boards and pieces of old tires on the road and also dig those dreaded potholes for bikers to run over and crash, thus giving the Road Gremlins a chance to rejoice over their acts of evil. As the old greybeard rounded a curve that moonlit night, the gremlins ambushed him, causing him to crash to the asphalt and skid before coming to a stop next to one of his saddlebags that had broken free. As he lay there, unable to move, the Road Gremlins made their way towards him. The greybeard, not being one to give up, started throwing things at the gremlins as they approached him. Finally, with nothing else to throw but a bell, he started ringing it in the hopes of scaring off the dirty little gremlins. About a half mile away, camped in the desert, were two bikers sitting around the campfire talking about their day's ride and the freedom of the wind blowing in their faces as they rode across this vast country. In the stillness of the night air, they heard what sounded to them like church bells ringing and upon investigating, found the old biker lying along the roadside with the gremlins about to get him. Needless to say, being a part of the biker Brotherhood, they proceeded to ward off the gremlins until the last of them ran off into the night. Being grateful to the two bikers, the old greybeard offered to pay them for their help, but as all true bikers do, they refused to accept any type of payment from him. Not being one to let a good deed go unnoticed, the greybeard cut two pieces of leather from his saddlebag tassels and tied a bell to each one. He then placed them on each of the bikers' motorcycles, as near to the ground as possible. The tired, old road warrior then told the two travelers that with those bells placed on their bikes, they would be protected from the Road Gremlins and that if ever in trouble, just ring the bell and a fellow biker will come to their aid. So, whenever you see a biker with a bell, you know that he has been blessed with the most important thing in life...friendship from a fellow biker.

If I recall correctly, if it is on the lower left front it is for "your" protection, if one is in the lower left rear it is for all the fallen riders ( who didn't have a bell ? )

Is the starter on an 84 MKI the same starter for an 89 MKII ? I know the Gen 2 starters work on a Gen 1 MKII, but can an 84 move up ?

exhaust for a MKII
KIC replied to GAWildKat's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
OK... I got over to my dad's ( the resting place of my parts bikes) and was finally able to remove the collector. I was able to disconnect the two rear top exhaust pipes but could not figure out how to get them out from inside the frame/engine area. Do you need those top rear pipes ? Here is what I have so far: These are the rear pipes I have off of my 89. -
Identify this connector please

I went all over town looking for bulk plug wire. Even places that said they had it (online) didn't have it in the store. I finally bough a decent set for an 8 cylinder and cut them to length . I still have four new ones left over from that. -
I've heard of a Peterbuilt truck, but this ain't no truck ...

Looks like maybe a custom bike built by one of the special builders like OCC -
exhaust for a MKII

How hard is it to remove the pipes and collector from the bike ? I can easily lay over one of the 84's , but just wondering what it will take to get the parts off. -
It was a real tough decision. I hate seeing another one bight the dust. The problem is what I could get for it selling it already taken apart and not running, verses the money saved and upgraded parts to my 89 is far apart. I have already saved $500.00 in parts and tires and hundreds more on the upgraded chrome parts. It is what it is. Just a sad day.

Okay gurus..would the front pipes and the collector from an 84 work on his 87 ? -
I sadly had to make a final decision on my 87. I bought it non-running from a guy who had it in an airplane hanger next to a very nice plane. He had let it sit for several years and could not get it running. Since I knew of the top secret SeaFoam repair, i thought I could get her running really quick and have a second bike for my son to ride. Unfortunately the PO had tried many wierd things to get the bike running. One was running some type of very harsh cleaner through the carbs that just destroyed practically every piece of rubber in each carb. He also "jerry" rigged ( sorry Jerry) the wiring and vacuum lines trying to do who knows what. I found the cruise control vacuum line attached to the front left cylinder ( poor man's cruise control fix ? ) Well after realizing that the bike needed way more than I could afford to put into it, and that it had so many new items ( 2 new tires) and upgraded parts...that would look really nice on my 89..I decided that it was time to put the lady to rest. I needed the new rear tire off of it and this is what I did...just switched the rear rims... I took her to my Dad's where my other two parts bikes are residing... Using his tractor I removed the rime and tire.. By pulling the trailer forward and having my brother-in-law steady the bike, off she came... Took off some nice upgrades and wrapped her up for future parts... Still makes me sad, but my 89 is looking really nice with the upgrades and I know I have the parts to keep the Brunette running for a while.. Bye Bye Blondie...

Or you can do it like us Western types do it...with a tractor...

89 VR Oil Leak left side of engine
KIC replied to Drewman's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Well here is the truth of the matter: The Gen 1 is an elegant, much faster, classy riding machine. It rolls with an air of elegance. The Gen 2 is a Gen 1 wanna-be, slower, a little sportier and has that teenage know-it-all attitude...you know it thinks its better, but we all know that's not true..... My 89 is leaking in the same area... I need to wash it and find the source too. NOTE: If you find it might be the rear valve cover bolts DO NOT try to tighten them ! They are shoulder bolts and will snap off. ( ask me how I know ) Now this will open a whole area of debate, but I solved my head gasket leak with a very (read: very) thin washer placed under the top of the shoulder bolt. -
Hey...I am the boss and I have my bike's permission to say so !!
-
Thanks guys. I did spray some penetrating oil on them last night but just wanted to be sure. My 89's tip came right off, Now knowing that I wont damage it, I took a rubber mallet and taught it who was boss. Thanks again. Bill

Really, I need some info on how to remove the end exhaust tips on some 1st Gen pipes. My 87 has the cool dual tips. My 89 has the bland shorter chrome tip. I just thought I would switch pipes, but after mounting the right side, I found the left side has some type of pipe mod from the previous owner. So I need to put the same pipe on, but I cant seem to get the tip off to switch... whats the secret my Venture Gurus... ???

I just logged in and changed mine. It does say to do it once you log into Ebay. Thanks for the reminder. Last thing I need is some scammer loggin on and buying Harley parts on my account...

Just realized...those are the only things that don't fall off the bike during a ride....
