some nice photos and videos of the Ural, gonna stop and look closer one of these days next time I'm over by a BMW in Atalanta that sells Urals. Not long ago got caught out not far from my house in some snow on my VTX, got it safely back to the house but I was soaking wet from melting snow and a nervous wreck. Its usually pretty rare to have snow here in GA, I like riding in cold weather, nothing like getting bundled up and riding around, the smell of wood fire in the air, etc. Last couple years we have gone looking at Christmas lights on the bike, stop for coffee & donuts. Watching the ural off road videos remind me of riding for hours and hours all around Eglin military reservation (about 50 x 20 miles of off road in N. Fla.) on a yammy 250 back when I was in the Air Force.

Have played a little with Wine, run an old WIN graphics program with it that I have (Paint Shop Pro). From what I read Garmin doesn't play well with Wine (which is ironic because the from what I read the software on the Garmin is linux based. Plan on messing around with it more later. Will probably try virtual box sometime just for the heck of it, don't really need it. Have more time to waste now trying out different things since I've retired. Many years ago tried setting up an apache server on an old hand me down desktop playing around with linux. Didn't really serve a purpose other than learning linux, didn't have the easier resources of the internet like today. Got frustrated with not having enought time and eventually shelved it, the hardware became so obsolete (but it worked:)).

So after a not very painful process I got rid of MS Windows:) on both my laptop (HP with Vista) and my netbook (MSI with XP) and have moved on to Linux (Mint w/ Cinnamon on my laptop and Olicloud on my netbook). I might try some other desktop interfaces but pleased with my current setup, will give me some things to do this winter in case its cold and rainy. Everything running smoothly and faster. Now to go back and refresh my memory on all the unix/linux commands so I can play around in a terminal window. Only problem I haven't found an EASY linux solution for was updating the maps on my Garmin Zumo 550 (no linux support at Garmin) but I can use my wifes MAC for that as needed. Currently using Shotwell to organize over 10,000 photos in my spare time.

So when do you take delivery of your new ride? I'm looking forward to a ride report. The next time I dump my wife over on the RSV on the driveway (only happened once so far) she may say "that's it, we're gettin a Ural.

Looks like a Goldwing minus the trunk with a short shield, and if you want self canceling signals you have to get the "Deluxe" edition.

some on your list I'm familiar with as I've used the WIN versions over the years, I'm closer to cutting the WIN cord as I just installed WINE which allows WIN programs to run within linux, gonna install a couple WIN programs I have and see how they do, then I may just reformat the hard drive to total linux.

Not sure what "software store" you are referring to. Did go ahead and install mint to run along side my WIN Vista laptop. Got a few win apps I use, once I find adequate replacements I'll ditch vista. So far mint is great. One funny minor glitch, I kept accidently hitting the "hot" corner with mouse before I knew it was there and my screen would do crazy things. I couldn't figure out what was going on, had to google about workspace and found info on the "hot spot".Kinda cool to be able to quickly switch between screens. Did look at software in "Software Manager" at all the stuff out there, plenty to keep me busy.

Your linux suggestions got me looking at it again, been a while since I fooled around linux, many years ago ran a couple desktops hooked together using linux (SUSE) , got away from it when I finally junked the desktops due to being obsolete, at the time had a MAC & PC I had to use that was work related and trying to keep up with everything was too time consuming. So the last couple days I spent a few min researching current linux status, couldn't belive all the new distributions. Just to try some out I created a ubuntu boot USB stick for my netbook that I take on MC trips sometimes, for my laptop I created a bootable linux mint (Maya) CD. Both just took a few min each and both running great. Might try a few other distros, have a lot more time now that I'm retired. See which one I like best and then ditch WIN. (writing this post using mint ) So far everything working great and FREE..

I know what you are talking about. My parents, who lived up in Knoxville, many years after I was gone installed some metal awnings over their windows. This large oak tree happened to be over one window near the room I would stay in on visits, while visiting one Fall I was sound asleep and then BANG, then again BANG, I jumped up and didn't realize what it was at first. They eventually covered that awning with carpeting but it would still make a racket, they just got used to it.

We've had so many nuts this year there have been days where it seems it was raining nuts, gonna have to use a shovel to clean up around the house, don't recall ever having so many especially with the drought we've been having, been a while since any rain. Have to watch out for falling nuts when out riding on windy days. Now the mountains have snow, US441 closed thru the smokies due to snow, early for snow, heck last year not many days all winter below freezing. Crazy weather. And now all this wind has blown over a pretty large oak tree thats been dead a while in the woods out back, guess I'll be out cleaning up the mess, when the nuts stop falling cause the little suckers hurt when they hit you in the head. Heres a link to some pic of snow on Mt. Leconte up in the Smokies. http://www.highonleconte.com/daily-posts.html

Would have to do some looking around to see if $ is good deal, this time of year prices should be on the low side due to end of riding season for most folks (here in the south we ride year around). I had a 750 Shadow, great bike, kept it for a while after getting my VTX and my son would ride it on trips then he moved out of state and I got tired of maintaining two bikes. The RSV was added a year or so later so I'm back to two bikes for now. I looked at an 1100 Shadow at one point, nice looking bike, water cooled shaft drive 5 speed if I recall. Good mid size bike, handles well. If maintained Hondas are very reliable bikes.

I had a chance to look at one first hand at a local BMW shop. It was cool, would love to take one for a spin myself. While out the other day a HD with a sidecar went by, don't recall ever seeing a HD before with one. Here is a link to a thread at another forum with Ural owners talking about Urals, interesting read. http://www.motocampers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5087&highlight=ural

Yep, many years ago while driving around the area with my uncle he would point out where different music stars were buying up farms building big homes. Used to see tour buses parked out front from time to time. Some years later he sold most of his farm to mother Judd and then when my G.father passed away daughter Judd (I believe it was Ashley)bought most of his farm which was adjoining my uncles there on Garrison road. Knoxville paper has been doing some articles where people been using "Greespace" laws to take big tax breaks around the state, evidently one reason that farms are being bought up. Here is a link to one of the articles. http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2012/oct/18/trees-help-shade-tennessees-wealthy-from-taxes/ Yea the southern part can be somewhat boring, I would stop at all the historical markers to break it up, learned a lot about the native indians along the way also The Al,Tn section to me was the more scenic, also found me a swimming hole in a park right next to where the NT crosses Tn River. The NTP Arches bridge is awesome to ride over, feels like you're in a plane looking down at the valley below. I also have family to visit when in the Nashville area which is nice. Also did a little hiking at the one point overlooking a valley.

NT is a great ride, did it solo a couple years ago on my vtx, camped three nights, was hot as blazes with humidity but still had a great time. Gonna go back and do it again with the wife on the RSV at some point. Took a couple side trips, surprised an uncle in Raymond, MS, went by my G.fathers old farm in Leipers Fork, NT took some of his land and he fought in court to get more $ for the timber he had been growing for decades. NT is built on the remains of my Great Gfathers home. You can see the farm (now owned by Ashley Judd) as you go by the Garrison Road horse camp. Spent a couple weeks every summer as a child at the farm, so many great memories.

Was hoping to make up to the BRP this last week to catch some leaf color but didn't make it. At least got to take the RSV to a wedding up in N. GA mountains this weekend. Here is a slideshow of a guy on the Dragon who didn't make it (just one of many) not often to have photographic documentation of an accident. http://xtremesportsphotography.photoreflect.com/store/Orderpage.aspx?pi=0QAK01AY080000&po=0&pc=28 (go thru slideshow and see what happens)

That would explain all the construction equipment at the time. Seems we had a fairly good stretch of packed sand/rock we had to travel over. How was the weather in general around Mesa Verde? I'd like to go down thru that part of the country some day but not sure the best time of year, summer heat gets harder to take, was thinking more like fall realizing the higher altitudes are getting colder. Last big trip I felt like a baked lobster riding across the plains in the heat. Over the ten days we rode we only hit rain one time, that was in Sturgis, SD. I had me a hotdog from a street vendor while my brother shopped in the HD shop while we waited for the rain to blow over.

Nice pic, sounds like a great ride. I did one similar few years ago on my VTX, met my brother south of Nashville as he was coming from E. Tn. on his HD then we headed west made a big circle of a little over 5,000 across MO,KS,CO, WY,SD,NB,IA,IN,IL,KY trying to hit the highest point in each state along the way along with some other things we wanted to do. But Let me tell you about Pikes Peak, it's at the bottom of my list of things we did, too crowded with traffic, at least weather was good, I got stuck maybe 1/4 mile from the top due to bouncing off a pot hole which pushed me to the right into a small snow melt stream which caused my back wheel to sink into the sand and there I sat going nowhere. Not a single motorcycle going by stopped and offered to help, some college kids in a jeep jumped out, picked up the bike and moved it over a foot and I was good to go. One lane of traffic was closed due to road construction right beneath the summit with backed up traffic on the hills, it was a pain to stop and go so we finally said the heck with it and turned and headed down. Then on the way down an ambulance was on the way up and traffic was stopped for that. I was so glad to get off that mountain. The best single moment of our trip was heading west over Wilkerson Pass early in the morn. with the sun behind us, not realizing the Collegiate Range could be seen just over the rise ahead of us, up until then the view is blocked riding thru the mnts. All of a sudden as we came over the pass far as you can see were snow covered peaks under a clear blue sky lit up by the morning sun, it was breathtaking. Glad they had a visitor center to pull off into. I'm ready to head west again, take the wife on the RSV this time!!!

Nice pics Its always a nice day trip to LRC from here in GA, some of the federal stimulus $ was used to redo the parking area by the falls along with the trail down to the river, much nicer now. Happen to ride over while under construction and the place was a mess. Lots of good riding in AL, have met up a couple times with some vtx riders and done some rides. We also like riding to Mt Cheaha (highest point in AL) also a good place to eat before headed home.
-
Been some really nice riding weather here lately in GA, lots of good riding in N. Ga once you get out of metro Atlanta. Also a lot of nice riding over into N. AL. We have several loops we like to take depending on half day/all day or just a couple hours and if we are stopping to shop or just looking at leaves, etc. The weather looks great thru the weekend. I've gotten spoiled since retiring, can take off anytime I want and ride.

It was fun following their path and trying to predict which way the wind was gonna take em. I even went to the weather service maps to look at wind conditions. Once taught a high school Meteorology class (I'm a retired HS science teacher) Its rare to hear much about balloons here in the east, I did see a cluster of white & orange party balloons that had escaped while out flying my rc planes last weekend, they were pretty high up. While riding my vtx out west couple years ago with my brother on his HD we were riding early in the morning headed toward Buena Vista from C.Springs and as we came down into the valley there was a hot air balloon that evidently had just taken off and was climbing just a hundred yards or so from the highway. It was pretty cool, we stopped and watched him/her for a few min., took a couple pictures of the balloon with the cloudless blue sky with snow on the Collegiate Range in the background.

Good question, the ones left are not far from the coast. I would assume they will put down before reaching open water. Big difference in their speeds as of 9:00 this morning, 35,21,11 mph for teams 5,3,2.
-
Earlier this evening Team 3 went almost directly over Birmingham's airport, if they keep going southeasterly as they have been they'll be well south of Atlanta's. Talk about aircraft traffic, some nights it looks like a highway in the sky with all the planes lined up as far as you can see with their approach lights turned on.

Just by coincidence I was on a different forum earlier and there were couple threads regarding Urals, one guy pulls his Kayak around with one. They say they are like tanks, will go about anywhere, especially the 2WD. It seems several folks ride them to Alaska cause there so tuff, good for all kinds of off road stuff.

So the southeast is under a large area of high pressure which means virtually no winds. Team #3 is slowly drifting east at about 20 mph, currently about 120 mi west of Atlanta which means will not be in the area until 6 hours or so from now meaning overnight sometime. Wonder if they will drift north or south of the city, current path appears to be south of the city assuming they keep flying. Will have to see where they are prior to bedtime. The "standing" chart gives their GPS so you can see exactly where they were when update is posted. Team 5 is about 90 mi away going over the N. GA mountains.
